Not sure what is wrong with my baby :( Acid reflux, asthma, cough or fur ball?

Hey guys!!!
My baby Cleo has been making this weird wheezing coughing noise, it starts with what is like the hiccups and then he leans forwards and this horrible wheezing noise comes out, sometimes lasting about a minute, his mouth stays shut and sometimes drool pours out of his mouth, the hiccupping/gagging continues for about 4 minutes. He has thrown up a couple of times too. He has done this about three times over the last week. Otherwise is fine, eating well and running on his cat wheel! Two months ago, we switched him to hills wet urinary care food, after an overnight trip to the vet because he wasn't able to wee. Im thinking of taking him to the vet in regards to this problem. He has had a wheeze since he was a kitten, taken him to the vet many times for this and always given antibiotics and steroids. Has also had tonsillitis twice. What do you guys think, vet bills are adding up but I am concerned about this. Thanks! Have attached a video of him doing it, the other times have been worse than this :(

I would definitely recommend a trip to the vet. I would also recommend showing them this video. Perhaps, chest x-rays are needed. If it is asthma, he should get a prescription for a bronchodilator inhaler to use daily as well as a rescue inhaler. I would also recommend if you get those medications to get an aerokat inhaler chamber pictured below. It is also worth recommending to have his heart checked for HCM. Coughing is also a sign of heart disease. My girl has both. She was diagnosed with asthma at almost 2yrs old and with HCM a year ago. (I thought she was having an asthma attack and made an appointment with the vet for follow up care and her xray showed her heart was enlarged then a referral to a cardiologist diagnosed the HCM)

Thanks so much for this! Yes the more I am researching, the more it looks like an asthma attack. I will definitely ask for check xrays for HCM. Going to take him to the vet tomorrow. I don't have pet insurance, is ongoing care for asthma and HCM expensive? Just trying to plan ahead!

Agree a vet visit, the wheezing would scare me too. I will be looking for your updates…positive vibes are sent.

Agree with the others to go to the vet. But also adding two of my crew have this kind of coughing too sometimes. They have this about once or twice a month. They cough for a minute or so. Went to the vet for both of them, showed the vet a video and the vet said it looked like they ate too fast and/or had something itchy in their throat. Since it didn't get worse the last few years I leave it like this. I make sure I speak calmy to them whwn they cough like that ad it seems to help.

The care for asthma can be costly, the rescue inhaler isn't too expensive like $40 but the daily one can be $150-200 depending on the pharmacy where you get it. The medications for hcm aren't too bad, but the echocardiograms are $500 through a specialist usually every 6mos. This is in US currency though not sure what the costs would be near you.

My first thoughtful asthma as well, though heart issues can’t be ruled out without a vet visit. I’m glad you are taking your little one in for a checkup. Please let us know what they find!

I would get a board certified cardiologist to do a HCM scan anda HCM DNA test.
