Well, this is an out of the blue type of question.
But does anyone personally know anything about Oriental Shorthairs?
I was researching sphynxes, but some how made my way to a page about this breed. Their look, especially their ears and face reminded me of the Sphynx (well, excluding the hairless part!) And the description on the breed seems pretty similar as well.

I think this boy is gorgeous.....and is up for adoption near me for only $200....I adore the chocolate looking coloring.....but, I am just letting my thoughts get ahead of me right now of course.......any thoughts on this breed?

I can help.
I bench with OSH breeders and am friends with them.
Do you want my friends info?
They are not shaped anything like sphynx but are hyper.
I can ask her for advice.

They are wonderful cats, nothing like a sphynx in appearance or personality though. They have a tapered wedge shaped head versus the sphynx modified wedge. They have no stop or break, where as a sphynx has a light to moderate stop. Ears are much larger, extreme oriental body type albeit muscular while the sphynx is moderately boned. The picture of the chocolate kitten does not show these differences very well, but other pictures would probably be more obvious, like the one ElGato posted (made my heart skip a beat, I LOVE Oriental SHs). Very vocal and full of life. Playful and intuitive, they get into trouble, and dont seem to slow down. They are in the same family as the siamese and have similar personalities. The last one I saw at a show was putting everyone in stitches. Swatting the derieres of anyone passing by his cage!!

I love orientals they are beautiful. I nearly got one last year when I was looking for a pal for Mo, I was in contact with a siamese/oriental breeder, then I got lola in the end. But they are lovely cats, I've always wanted one!

I will have to tell her it is not from a breeder.
I agree they are nothing like sphynx and almost got one before Polar.
Their daces are very pointy and they love to be held and will get very vocal in the judging cages,
Here is what my friend has to say.
"I would say that $200 is a really good price even for a pet. She should find out more about the breeder and what her $200 includes. Does she get any kind of health guarantee? If its a case of the kitten needs a home and they simply are quoting a low price without vetting or health guarantee then your friend just needs to be aware of the possible consequences of taking that on. I don't think its terrible to do something like that but at the same time if the kitten is ill and has a short life span will she be able to live with that?"

Shauntay--Thanks for all the great info, I barely knew any of that, very interesting!

M2M--- Thank You so much! I appreciate both you and your friends help! I think I am going to send the person an email, and ask to visit the kittens next week to see if that is a breed that would suit my life well.

I <think> that this person may be a breeder....but, in my area, it can be sometimes difficult to sell cats....we'll see....

This is all the ad says,

"CFA OSH chestnut males
shots and worming
health guarantee

very well socialized and affectionate"

Hopefully I'll learn some more after emailing them. Thanks again!

It sounds like they come with CFA papers and this is a breeder.
I will send this info to my friends.
Would you want to show.
BTW I love the OSH.

Yes, I would love to show! But, I have a feeling this kitten wouldn't be Show Quality.... I'll PM you the link where I found her ad.

Just to be clear though, this is all in the low works. I have never met this breed before---but, since my family (especially my son) isn't grooving to the hairless cat idea, maybe a Oriental might just be perfect for the time being. I'm looking for a cat that is energetic, want to be with you all the time, playful, yet at the same time a lap cat who can cuddle after a long day. We'll see..... But I do still terribly want a Sphynx! But, have to do what is best for my family and son.

Thank You again!

I got your pm but the links are not working.
Can you email me at yahoo?
I bench with the OSH at all the CFA shows and yes I have held my friends new OSH kitten.
You can not tell in the pics but when you see the breed in person the faces are very pointed.
My screen name is my email addy.

I love OSHs. If I hadn't found a sphynx, I think I would have gotten an OSH. I cat sat for 3 OSHs when I was in college, and they were full of energy and personality. The youngest guy even slept with me under the covers like my sphynx does!

OSH's are so pretty to me. If it were a perfect world the following breeds is what I'd want.

Bengal
MORE SPHYNX
Savannah
Serval
Ocicat
OSH
MainCoon
Turkish Angora
Havana Brown

okay - list is too long..lol I've got to reconsider this.

Here is my list of breeds before I decided on a sphynx.
This is my list of Breeds
Russian Blue
Siamese
Sphynx
Manx
Bengal
Oci
Egyption Mau
Ragdoll
Tonkinese
Any Asian Type of Cat
Bombay
Cornish Rex
I would love a Singapura or OSH also.
Before I got Polar I was very close to getting a Bombay,OSH,Cornish Rex or Singapura.
I was advised to stay with sphynx since I plan on breeding in the future.
The breeds I want the most now are Bombay and Singapura.

My want breeds are.....
Exotic Shorthair (teddy bears!)
Persian (softest fur!)
Sphynx (obviously!)
Oriental Shorthair (love the sound of their personality!)
Ragdoll (they have just the prettiest baby blue eyes!)
Siberian (gorgeous, and good on my allergies, which I have, but continue to ignore!)
Savannah (spots!)

Actually just one of each..........
