Paka is 9-1/2 now (oh my) and she suddenly couldn’t get on our bed by herself. T was admittedly very high as it was a poster bed with those extremely high mattresses that exist now. We noticed that she was walking sort of squatted and immediately called to take her to the vet. They took xrays. Nothing broken. Bedrest, painkiller and muscle relaxant. Don’t know if the meds made her more hyper but she was impossible to keep still. By the end of the week she was not better and the vet ordered us to put her in a dog crate. She spent another week and a half there and then went to the orthopedic surgeon who told us to keep her there for another two weeks with prednisone but there was a small deformity on her spine, either congenital or from an injury before we do the MRI and other expensive testing. She isn’t in pain until the examination. I AM FRANTI.C !!!

Poor thing! What do you mean she wasn’t in pain until the examination?

Also, I’m sure you’ve thought of this now, but you might get some stairs for her to climb to get into bed. I have some for my almost 11 year old and she uses them without exception.

@tuffysmommy Awhhh ... positive vibes for sweet Paka... so hard when we have to crate rest them... but it is for the best to help heal... all paws crossed the meds work....

one thing to ask did the vet rule out any knee patella luxation? just brainstorming... my one kitty had this and the first thing was not wanting to jump up on the bed and a limp... then kitty would stretch leg out and pop it back into place... he did this once or twice a year.. also more brainstorming to check each nail and nail bed skin fold area to make sure no horned nails double growth or even litter stuck in skin folds on feet.. more brainstorming..

I have a high bed too... I put a small wicker cat bed next to the bed ...my kitties use that to jump up onto the bed... some members have used those little pet step stair cases.... has the vet mentioned any kitty safe joint supplements would be beneficial? like duralactin ,cosequin , glycoflex? I have tried all 3 on my dogs ... and the best to date hands down has been the duralactin . it took about 30 days to see a difference... I use it daily on their food ( for my big dogs for years I I use microlactin people version, more cost effective for dogs for my crew. It made a huge difference in my dog Duke. he didnt want to play or walk... 30 days later he was hopping about and going for walks again...

cat version

always ask your vet before giving anything for Paka's needs

following closely for updates

Oh no so sorry your baby is going through this. Perhaps a slipped disc? Back pain is horrible in humans...I wish these babies could talk. I will be looking for updates.

Thank you all so much for your love and concern. When they were examining her at the surgeons office they looked and touched places I never even thought of and in one spot she complained a bit. Once before getting out of the soft carrier at our regular vet she gave a short cry. My regular vet has already suggested glucosamine but said to hold off until we got to the evaluation. YodaMom, you are so knowledgeable. I wondered about them checking each toe and nailbed and feeling her legs and knees and rotating them and holding her up and having her back feet touch the side of the examining table. I feel like a very bad mommy because I didn’t ask them to explain their every move, but you have instead. I was so frightened. I am so frightened. I want to say one more thank you to you all right now and read the threads below.

@tuffysmommy

These are great for high profile beds. They are pretty tall. (I have them).

Thanks everyone. We took apart the bed and put the mattress on the floor. Going to see about the stairs for the couch and armchair. She used to jump into the tub. Actually she did that the very day we took her to the vet the first time when she was actually limping already. Then there is the dining room table.....(yes I am a permissive mommy) ...what a dilemma!!! BTW my husband’s name is Sheldon too. Thanks everyone. She sleeps and sleeps today. Her furry sisters won’t come to sleep with us but stay near her crate. For the first few days they left her food, then they realized she wasn’t coming for her portion so they finish it now. We are an unhappy family right now. Daddy does wash her and clean her ears. I tried to send a picture of her accommodations but it comes out sideways. Thanks for being there for us.

Hi everyone, she is more active tonight. You are going to think I’m nuts but every time something hurts on me I think....if I were Paka, maybe I feel like this....and I know I will eventually feel better. Last week’s bang on my knee seems better. Today I have a stiff neck and shoulder and I sure hope she doesn’t feel like that in the cold/ humid. But I know eventually I’ll feel better...I just hope it’s the same for her.

Paka is stronger but not better. Shel has taken her out to clean her ears and bathe her and she stands up a bit in his lap so he says she feels stronger but not perfect.

Resting her can sometimes be complicated. The other day we put her in my lap while her accommodations were being cleaned. It has two doors so this can be accomplished without really moving her. After she was in my arms, calmly under her blankie when she was put back into confinement, she stood on her back legs, stretched up and put her front paws out like asking for another hug. I thought It might have not been a good idea and considered putting her in the smaller cage we had bought her first. She hasn’t really done that again so she stays in first class. She is moving around more, sitting up , looking at her sisters and us. It would frighten me but she used to run around the length of the apartment, getting underfoot, finding ping pong and other balls where she hid them, jumping in the tub, couch and on us Then crawl under the covers for a nap. She is contorting to clean herself even now.

I have no one to share this with because I can’t let anyone at work know in case I have to cover my reason if I have to take off. Cat care is not one of our benefits.

I rue every moment in her childhoodI didn’t spend with her. My injuries fell better. I’m not so sure about hers. :-((

Good morning, thanks for asking. She is sitting up and quietly looking around. My husband says she seems stronger. He feeds her at 200 EST. She was taking a bath before. She really is so sweet, putting up with all of this. Tuesday we send a video to the vet so it’s taking a walk time this weekend. I’ll let everyone know how that goes. I fully expect her to spend a lot of time under the covers because although the temperature in her is constant, somehow they all know when it changes. That said this year they all adjusted to the end of daylight savings time remarkably well. I guess there are more pressing things going on for them right now. The others still leave her food even though she gets her own and eventually eat it after a good while. I’m hoping they know something we don’t. I’m going to call the vet later.

I'm so sorry for you and your baby. Have you considered giving CBD oil. They have it for cats and it really helps the pain and anxiety for my lil doggy. Thank goodness my boys are still young and we are replacing our high poster bed within the next 6 months. For you

Thank you for your suggestion. To be honest I hadn’t thought about this. I really appreciate all choices offered as the vets say she is just in discomfort now but I fear for if and when she is. Actually I am terrorized by the thought.

As to the poster bed. The floor provided a good home for our bed. Don’t be sorry later that you didn’t act faster. Guilt is eating me up.

Thank you so for your prayers and everyone’s healing wishes.

Hi, she has to have an MRI and I get more and more frantic. We will go to a neurologist next. I am at work trying to hold it together. I made the appointment for next Wednesday. I guess sooner than later. I just got the amounts paid for the others teeth removal and the insurance paid nothing on one. I guess it will be a case of "it is what it is"

@tuffysmommy ((hugs))) and positive vibes for the followup test. fwiw, I dont have pet insurance... but.... I use Care credit.... the vets office has a pamphlet and it can be used for human stuff too.... I have never ever paid a dime of interest... its basically like 6 mos same as cash, monthly payments and no interest if paid off in full within 6 mos... but the monthly minium payment will not pay it off and thats when nearly 30% compounding interest kicks in.... I have learned how to master using care credit... for example... if a bill is $180.. I buy two bottles of hyllyt shampoo the vet sells... then the bill is over $200 and is eligible for the 6 mos promo... I divide the total 200 by 6 mos.. pay that monthly plus a few dollars more .. and its paid in full no interest.

some vets will work with you... my vet went 18 mos promo for a $600 vet bill.... it all depends on the vets office... doesnt hurt to ask..

I know the eye specialist I took yoda to did take care credit.. really helped bcz like you the week before a spent a ton on my dog at the vet..

I get it ..believe me... just figured i would put out the care credit which is a great tool to use if you stay on top if it ...

sending a lair full of prayers and hugs..
