I am brand brand new to this forum frantically searching for an answer.
I have a 1 year old sphynx cat named Pewbs who has developed nasty opens sores on his neck, face, and head.
He also has red hives on his tummy.

A little background.. He has gotten tiny red bumps on his neck before that have scabbed when he itched them.. and healed up fine. I figured it was acne and everything was okay...but Nothing like this. The little bumps started about 2 weeks ago and were the normal bumps he has always gotten. ... but they have swelled up and opened .... I have no clue whats going on and I feel so bad. =(

He eats Orijin cat and kitten and always has. At night his Orijin is mixed with Primal raw turkey and salmon.
He gets a bath weekly to bi weekly. I used to use Whisker City but the smell made our chests hurt..So we switched to Aveno baby organic natural harvest which we have been using for months now. I havnt changed laundry detergents and cant think of anything I have changed other then treats.. But they are My little Lion grain free , no corn, no wheat chicken recipe.

I want to take him to the vet but considering how rare a breed he is, Im trying to find one familiar with them. I gave him a bath 3 days ago and put coconut oil on his neck before bathing to try and soothe any itch. And tonight I put soft paws on his back nails to prevent him from scratching them. Hes not acting any different,, seems normal...sleeps in the same place as always...
PLEASE someone tell me if youv seen this

Ok. Ty very much.
If he is on the same food he has always been on... can it eventually become an allergen? I havnt changed his food in over a year.... ?

Welcome to sphynxlair, good to have you. Most times it is a allergy.
Mostly to food, but, could be a number of things. I would try to find
a good recommend Vet. The skin needs to be checked. Where are you
located? Someone here might be close to you and can make a recommendation.
There is also a link of recommended Vets here it is. Read through the forum
and see if there is one close to you.

the marks on his neck look similar to the ones Vito gets when he scratches himself. Is your baby declawed? It is still possible that it could be allergies. A food trial takes about 12 weeks to see a difference.

He is not declawed but last night i put soft paws on his back feet so he couldnt tear them open anymore, and have scheduled a vet visit on Saturday. Iv been putting neosporin on it today to try and make sure he doesnt get an infection. I also am wondering if its an allergy... I havnt changed his food at all...but i did start giving him a new kind of treat a couple weeks ago and thats when it started. I havnt gave him them for the past 5 days. If the treats are what caused it...how long til these should clear up?

@Rlklassy , (( healing hugs))) and Welcome :)

When I lived in Colorado, we took my dad's dog to the university in Fort Collins with great results-
http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu/vth/Pages/default.aspx
Perhaps the may help or give a referral..
My dad is still in the Denver/Arvada area so I will ask him too about his current vet he brags on.

Definitely look at the help center info Patti mentioned. Ask vet to rule out Urticaria pigmentosa ? etc worth exploring..
I bath only with Hylyt Shampoo with good skin results and feed Dr Tims Chase cat food for all 4 of my nakeds with good results and has cut down baths to 1x a month with warm water wipe downs in between.
I do not use any coconut oil

I keep on hand non toxic vetericyn spray for skin.. http://vetericyn.com/mobile/
It's cheaper online from vetrxdirect.com etc
I find the spray onto a cotton flat round and dubbed onto an area works well. I also use the vetericyn VF Hydrogel the same way
http://www.vetrxdirect.com/search/?q=Vetericyn

Please keep us updated and I will PM tomorrow when I get ahold of my dad for his vet info.
((( healing vibes)))))

@pussiette had something similar on her kitty I believe, perhaps she will chime in, I can't remember what the outcome was. It does appear to be an allergic reaction to something, most commonly its diet. Scroll down a few threads in this post and see the pictures - http://sphynxlair.com/community/threads/urticaria-pigmentosa.24462/

Edit: After reading through that thread it appears @pussiette's issue was a food allergy - http://sphynxlair.com/community/threads/urticaria-pigmentosa.24462/page-2#post-287010

I'm sorry that your kitty is suffering. I hope the vet has a solution for you. Just something to keep in mind .. I know you said he's been on the same food for over a year ... but, maybe the manufacturer has changed the recipe of the food? I know this happened with my dogs, once they changed the recipe, the dogs didn't do well on the food anymore .... and they'd been eating it for years!

Good luck, I hope your little guy gets better quick.

@admin whilst this was treated by vets and specialists as food allergy it turned out to be terminal cancer.

Hello Everyone. I wanted to do an update on Pewbs. So basically He was always fed Orijin Cat and kitten which has chicken protein throughout the day and at night i would mix his orijin with one raw nugget by Primal. the chicken and salmon flavor.
I stopped giving raw for 2 weeks and thats when he broke out into all those sores. I never thought not feeding him raw would cause this...And i didnt give him anymore raw until April 27th. so I changed the dry food to the Orijin regional which is beef protein on april 11th to see if it made a difference. Well it absolutely did,,, He broke out 3 x as bad. Sores all over his head, neck, face and down to his shoulders. The vet told me to keep him on this food. So he almost finished the bag of orijin beef on april 27th. So on the 27th I went to buy more food and decided I was going to switch to raw only...and added raw goats milk.. When i called my vet to tell her that i switched his food again before 90 days was up she sounded very angry. I told her i Had bought more raw food and raw goats milk and she basically told me my cat will suffer from the change. She told me i absolutely should not do that and to quit giving him raw goats milk because he is lactose intolerant and that raw food is why the cavemen died.
Well i ignored her entirely and Im so happy I did. Pewbs was COVERED in sores and the inflammation was horrible! Within 4 days of getting him back on raw and a little goats milk, he completely cleared up. COMPLETELY ... I will post pics to show how bad his condition was and what he looks like now.
so basically
March15th- no more raw at night. no more raw at all
March 31st- broke out into sores
April 11th-switched to orijin regional , broke out way worse
April 27th - put him on Primal raw chicken and salmon with goats milk
May 1st- all cleared up

Amazing I will continue to feed him only raw foods. The vet said Chicken was more then likely the culprit.. however his raw food is chicken also. Not to mention since switching to raw only..his skin is extremely soft. No dry feeling fuzzies. Hes smoooooooth

@Rlklassy , happy dance and paws up for Pewbs Recovery - sometimes we just have to go with our gut :)

Wow! Thank you for sharing! We all learn from each other here and you and Pewbs experience really does teach us that some of these skin issues stem from food related stuff

Looking forward to happy Healthy Pewbs pics!
Before and after would be awesome to see the transformation!

Lol about the caveman comment .. Geez

And for whatever its worth.. i began feeding pewbs raw foods because of all the amazing success stories iv read about..even as far as curing some cancers. It may be worth a shot to anyone experiencing health issues with your baby. Also... raw goats milk has natural antihistamines and help animals control allergies in many cases. it may be a great alternative to steroids and such.

So happy things have cleared up. I am sorry your vet was stern with you, but most agree to switch slowly and if allergic reaction go back to the tried and true and do not introduce yet another new ingredient. But either way it does not matter as your baby is doing great and that is all that counts! Yay!
