Hello!
I have been battling runny stools with my boy Bambi since I got him in June 2022. I have changed his diet many times trying to figure out what is the right fit. I have been up all night researching on this site, Facebook, Reddit, Google, etc. for food suggestions as this seems to be a common problem with the nakeds.

I have not had his poo tested YET due to a rough financial situation but from what I have gathered, it could possibly be an allergy to poultry since that is the flavor of majorly every food I’ve bought him to no avail. I know he has no worms at least because he was fully tested when I first got him and he is an inside only cat that is not exposed to anything parasitic to be infected with.

I have not entirely ruled out possible internal issues, but other than his soft stools, he is one healthy boy! He plays with his brother, sleeps, drinks, eats, and his skin/eyes/ears/weight are all in good shape!

I definitely plan to test his stool when I am in a better financial spot upcoming soon, but I had been hoping trying to find a new diet on my own beforehand would’ve solved the issue by now…unfortunately for me and my baby, I seem to have chose all the wrong choices

So far he has had:
Wellness core - canned chicken recipe pate (grain free, high protein)

Wellness - dry chicken recipe kibble (grain free, high protein)

Nutrisource cat and kitten - blue bag kibble

Iams - healthy kitten kibble

Purina one - sensitive skin and stomach kibble

Purina one - urinary health turkey and giblets wet food (I get this from the vet for his big brother, which they occasionally share due to Bambis only other option being kibble and I know that is not suitable, especially for male cats!)

Pure pumpkin puree

Fortiflora powder

Taste of the wild - Rocky Mountain kibble (high protein)

Purina one - chicken urinary tract health kibble

Hounds and gatos - beef canned pate

Since I fear it could be a poultry allergy, I recently started him on the H&G all beef canned food to see if it would make any difference. It has been two or three days of this food now and he has decided he will not even try a bite of it. ): I began using a spoon to force feed him since if not for the H&G he would have no other food to eat unless he goes right back to the chicken kibble his brother eats. He hates the smell and the taste of the beef food. I’ve also tried mixing it with water and using a syringe to get it down easier. Though he still protests due to the taste, and force feeding is a very long and messy process with my baby and I feel like I’m torturing him!

I’ve read every possible thread online about diet for runny poops and all of the results are so conflicting and so confusing.
I’ve been looking towards a raw / freeze dried raw that will fit within my budget but also help easy his tummy issues (hopefully!) he is used to free feeding his kibbles so I know he’s going a bit crazy and hungry without it currently. I’ve seen an insane amount of mixed reviews on royal canin which makes me fearful to try it and waste another 50-70$ on a food he will not touch nor help his poops.

I am also fearful of trying raw, but a lot of people seem to turn to that diet when nothing else will solve their poopy problems. My only concern is Bambi turning his nose up to it and being a picky eater. having zero experience with raw feeding, I worry he will be VERY reluctant to even try a bite. But if it is the best option for my baby, I am willing to give it a shot until I can afford a vet for stool testing (soon hopefully!) if the problem is not resolved with a more beneficial diet in the meantime.

What would be my best option for raw / freeze dried raw foods given all the information above? (Preferably something that is already packaged and ready for consumption, nothing I have to make on my own with bought ingredients.)

This has been a LONG, TIRESOME, and MESSY journey. I want nothing more than for my baby to be healthy and happy. This may be a slow and painful process, but I am not giving up.❤️

thank you to anyone and everyone who may be able to help me out with suggestions. I appreciate all of the advice I have come across so far, I can only hope for a positive change coming soon.

Tried to edit but I ran out of time.

Wanted to add / change: I am not saying any type of parasite is 1000% ruled out, but it would seem unlikely since he had clean tests and scans as a kitten and has not since been exposed to any type of parasitic causing factors that I am aware of considering he is an inside only cat and has not eaten anything that could contain parasitic bacteria such as store bought raw meats or any type of dairy product. Both of my boys get their water changed daily, if not multiple times a day and I ALWAYS wipe out the bowl before adding fresh water back into it. (Porcelain bowls.) I will be calling my local vets after the weekend when they are open again to at least get a general price estimate on an allergy / fecal test and get him an appointment as soon as I am able. ❤️

Sorry to hear you are dealing with this issue. Seems like you already tried a lot! My boy Toa had diarrhea/soft stool also when he was a kitten. I tried a lot but then decided to go for raw food. In a few days he had firm poops! I did feed him raw for 2 years. Then I switched to Royal Canin Gastro Instestinal and that works well for him too.
If you can afford (commercial) raw food I would give it a try. Take someting like rabbit, mine loved it. If your boy doesn't like it, try to mix it with the wet food he loves. Start with a little raw and a lot of wet food and tgen adding more raw food and less wet food everyday
You could also try this trick with the new wet food you are trying now and the old wet food he likes.
Good luck!

@bumbino bumping up thread as well. if he has been to vet within a year, sometimes I can call my vet and ask to drop off a stool sample to check, rule out giardia etc. some vets will treat for giardia in case a false positive. was he dewormed at vet as a kitten? (** I will not usse the over the counter products*)

@Xandria @Catzzzmeow @Staceyxxx and others for suggestions?

hugs n head smooches to Bambi, members will surely chime in

**also from my experience it took up to 12 weeks for a food to settle with kitties gut. especially my IBD bengal. she is on nutrisource cat and kitten food blue bag you mentioned. my sphynx crew and bengal on nutrisource cat and kitten food blue bag you mentioned trying along with hills urinary hairball formula dry ( read years ago the fiber in it good for stool so I gave it a try , feed in separate bowls)
changing too often can create it's own poo issues.

Raw worked very well in my house for a long time. We liked to buy the pre ground stuff from hare-today.com

Decided to give these items a try, if anyone has experience with either of these please let me know how things went! ❤️ I am trying to avoid any type of chicken flavor despite bam being a picky chicken lover lol, though the dry food does have chicken meal and chicken fat in the ingredients unfortunately, but it was the only one I could find in that brand that catered to gut health. I tried looking for royal canin gastro health food first but found none available online or in my area that was catered to gut health or sphynx in general. Hoping here is a change with these. Always hoping.

We had ours on Stella and Chewys as kittens but they had supply chain issues at the time and it was SUPER pricey.

You’re better off buying a frozen commercial raw food. Our kitten had a chicken allergy which we only found out from blood in his stool occasionally- the vet asked us to switch proteins and he’s got no issues anymore.

Best of luck, we tried all sorts of kibbles and canned foods but nothing helps like the raw food does.

I’ve never been on here before and I’m just seeing your thread. I’m not sure how long you’ve had a sphynx but a lot of things I’ve read (and breeders I know) mention that beef can make sphynx cats extremely sick. So whatever you do, I would stay away from using that for your baby.

I feed frozen commercial raw for both my babies now after starting them on dry kibble and wet food in the beginning. They only eat chicken currently and I’ve been told it’s better for them to have a variety so we are in the process of changing from Darwin’s raw food to My Pet Carnivore. The new one we are trying uses the whole animal and has a HUGE variety, as well as being more affordable for us with the amount we’ve been feeding twice a day.

I hope you see some improvement for your little one. Just stick with it and don’t give up!!!

@bumbino HI! We had a bit of the same issue with our kitty, we found he did well on Royal Canin Sphynx adult food(it does have chicken though) if that's available to you. Although we are currently starting the process as of tomorrow of switching him over to raw food. We will be trying out Big Country Raw as it's canadian (not sure where you are)

I started a raw trial program with Sambuca, but was bombarded with negativity and I admit at that time they were prob right she was a newbie only 11-12 weeks ish... so I chose Smalls frozen fresh wet and solid gold kibble Now my 3 girls are 2(x) 2 years and 1(x) 5yrs Ive been struggling now 2 years trying to make smalls the only food i feed but it just isn't working out not enough variety too bland too much poultry (we have skin issues when too much poultry is consumed. I love solid gold rabbit but eww its canned cat food and smelly, plus poops stink! I find red meats are great for poops nice not smelly not runny and usually only 2 small poops a day or one larger volume 1
please let me know what you think of big country raw and your thoughts on the bacteria issues
any thoughts on litter choices while we are chatting TY TY IMG_0650.jpegIMG_0675.jpegIMG_0669.png

@Sambuca sorry to hear you're having issues! I'll definitely let you know how we like big country raw, I'm going to use their fare game option which is supposed to be a balanced raw diet option with 2 to 3 proteins in each meal so I'm hoping for the best. As far as litter I use fresh4life and have been liking it better than others I've tried. I have used Swheat Scoop before and it was terrible so I don't recommend trying that haha

We've been switching over for a week now and have been loving it. Also big country raw has pure protein options you can choose from if you don't want a mix. Keep in mind those are not balanced diets and you would need to look into purchasing supplements to add to the food. Happy to help! Good luck with your baby

Get Metronidazole and/or ProPectalin. Metro is an intestinal antibiotic that is an anti diarrheal and ProPectalin is an overall anti diarrheal. Raw diets are a fantastic way to have unbalanced nutrition (damage is exponential when already dealing with Sphynx’s, and unless someone feeding raw can prove to me they are creating meals with a veterinary nutritionist specialist who did a nutrition residency- I do not trust them) and will only increase your chances of exposing them to parasites. Don’t bother with the expensive diagnostics until after you try these medications. Stay on the Fortiflora, and pumpkin is wonderful but I personally believe it helps with keeping stools not firm to help with cases of constipation.
As for your normal diet, Purina Pro Plan and Iams were fantastic, always remember that the veterinary board WSAVA only has five approved food brands that have willingly completed all of the required food trials; Iams, Purina Pro Plan, Eukanuba, Hill’s Science Diet, and Royal Canin. Any other food brand is not vetted as strictly as them therefore I do not trust others.
