Hi everyone
I purchased a kitten 2-3 weeks ago off a lady, 1 week in he started to develop a rash, it was on his neck, head and ears
These were big pimple looking red bumps, I went to the vet 4 days ago and they told me it was due to dry skin, I have been applying coconut oil to his skin and the rash has dramatically spread, he is now covered in small dots all over his face and body.
I spoke to another vet and they said it could be an allergy or mites.
Please send me your opinions

@Eveenas ., welcoming you and your baby to the lair family. wanted to share coconut oil recently was no longer recommended as it can clog pores. any changes to food (is your baby on same food had at breeder? ) change of litter? use scented litter? members will surely. we have seen similiar and often it is food allergies . members will surely chime in

I have him on royal canine baby and mothercat wet food and royal canine kitten biscuits which the breeder was using, I also use the breeders choice litter which the breeder was using.
The only change would be that he is trying to eat my dogs food which is also royal canine jack Russell I’m thinking he is having a reaction to this

Agree stop the coconut oil. I only use to get gunk off their noses. Good catch on it could be the dog food. Hoping you can separate during feeding time and that could be an easy fix. To me it looks like a food allergy.

I would agree to discontinue applying the coconut oil. Hopefully, it is just the dog's food. Allergies can be tricky. Best of luck!

Hi! My kitten is a similar color (and age!) to your baby AND has very very similar bumps. We were told to start a new diet with allergy prescribed food and so far it hasn't helped. Has anything worked for you so far in clearing up your kittens skin?

Hi all
The allergy went away, it was the dog biscuits but now it has come back about a week ago, even worse than before his whole belly is covered in a red rash, and his ears are red from scratching also a scab under his chin on his neck.
I make sure he doesn’t eat any dog food and he is still on the same diet as when he was a kitten, I’m so lost on what to do

GOOD NEWS.
We took our baby Ernesto (5 months) to a skin and ear specialist here in los Angeles. These doctors must undergo an additional four years of training so they really know their stuff. The doctor put Ernesto on a prescribed diet. Royal Canin PR single protein for cats. Both kibble and wet food. We stopped any treat, corn litter, or ANY other food. He also sent Ernesto home with a round of steroids. This helped him improve significantly, only problem was once he didn't take his steroid as often, he would break out. We waited weeks and the same thing kept happening, I became discouraged and believed it was not a food allergy after all. BUT the doctor told us to be patient - A FOOD ALLERGY CAN TAKE UP TO 6 WEEKS TO CLEAR BECAUSE THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM CAN BE REACTIVE FOR A WHILE AFTER.
Ernesto was on royal canin kitten food and that's what the breeder was feeding him so we thought it was okay, but he was in fact allergic. He is now smooth as a baby. We have also been giving him half a zyrtec everyday.
IMPORTANT: You must regularly have blood samples taken when your kitten is on the steroid as this can make them diabetic and have other negative effects on their organs. It's a delicate balance but certainly worth it to manage the symptoms while the allergy clears...

Best of luck out there!

I have attached some photos of his rash, what food have you been feeding your kitten now as he isn’t on royal canine I’m trying to find an alternative if not raw diet, but I need to transition him

The rash looks similar, but I am not a doctor obviously so I don't know if it's the same. I would start them on half a quarter zyrtec TWICE a day (one half per day). Keep this going for a few weeks. The food is ROYAL CANIN SELECTED PROTEIN PR SINGLE PROTEIN. It needs a prescription. do this for 6 weeks at least. That's my advice, but the best thing would be to take them to a specialist. The steroid will help the symptoms tremendously.
