Hi guys!

I’m posting for the first time to hopefully receive some insight and answers, as I feel my sphynx baby’s problems are reoccurring and not being fixed by my vet.

Misha will be 3 years old this coming December. I traveled from VA to FL to pick her up from the breeder when she was just a teeny tiny little thing. Since then, she has been my world. She has not had any of the typical sphynx issues I read about prior to picking her up such as skin issues, diarrhea, heart conditions, etc. but recently she has been racking my care credit up due to numerous vet visits.

About a year ago, Misha began vomitting after meals and could not keep anything down. I immediately freaked out and took her to the emergency vet, as it was the weekend. X-rays were done and nothing looked abnormal and no obstructions were found. We followed up with her primary vet who then decided she could be allergic to her food. She was put on a prescription diet of wet and dry food by Royal Canin. It is a rabbit protein diet. Since I switched to this, she has been fine, but my wallet hasn’t since this food is so pricey.

About two days ago, Misha started vomiting and it was like her episode last year all over again. No diarrhea but hardly using the bathroom and can’t keep food down. She has an appetite and will try to eat but immediately throws her food up within the hour. I again, rushed her to the emergency vet last night and the same results were shown. She was given medicine for nausea and gave liquids for hydration. I was told she should not throw up for 24 hours. This morning I fed her a small amount of her prescription wet food and it came back up.

I also want to mention that since she started this food she has been hacking and coughing more often. We also went to the vet for that and they told us it was allergies and to purchase a air purifier and give her Zyrtec which I do.

About 3 hours ago, I decided to boil her chicken and rice with water and see if she could keep that down. Took a little for her to want to eat it but she finally finished a decent amount of this and has yet to throw up.

Is it possible that she has grown allergic to the rabbit protein? Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do next? What should I feed her? Raw diet? New brand of protein based food? Do we even think it’s a food allergy? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Fwiw my kitties threw up rabbit formuals by a different brand

My kitties do well on Nutrisource cat and kitten in the blue bag .
I mix l-lysine powder in the only wet food (purina pro plan urinary focus )
I can get them to eat (I tried every high end - it's a gravy like texture

Mine refused to eat the "prescription" foods v(his was cd)
So I picked a food with the very similar phosphorus %
Using the food chart actually from "Tanya's comprehensive guide " for kidneys
But was a great list I keep on hand

My vet had me get $3 chlortabs at Walmart gave a dosage for my boys weight.
Was told he had seasonal allergies . I also bought the hp300 air purifier .

Unexplained vomiting is both scary and frustrating. We were in the vet a lot with Molly for it. They would give her an anti nausea shot, metronidazole, and she would be ok in a few days. Til the next time it happened.

Had your vet discussed IBD as a possibility? Molly was eventually diagnosed with it. We manage it through diet (raw food, and rotating proteins if she gets sick from one), and SLIPPERY ELM BARK. I cannot say enough good things about it. Cheap, safe, and easy to use it helps to soothe and heal the gut (like a natural pepto bismol). PM me if you have questions, we went through a lot of vomiting too

OH and wanted to add - the coughing is more likely from acid reflux and throat irritation due to vomiting than any type of airborne allergens.

Have you tried keeping her bowl constantly filled with kibble? Sometimes if the bowl is empty for several hours and you come home and fill it up, kitty will be so ravenous is that they will eat too quickly and vomit.

Thanks for replying! She was put on Cerenia before leaving the emergency vet on Sunday. Still managed to throw up while on the medication. I thought she was going to keep the chicken and rice down that I made her yesterday, but right before I went to work this morning, she threw up. I ended up taking her to my primary vet and dropping her off. The vet just called me and her intestines looked super inflammed so they will be doing bloodwork to see where her white blood cell count is. This will be able to tell if she has some sort of IBS apparently.

We are switching her food but the vet still wants to keep her on Royal Canin prescription...just a different protein base. We will see how this goes :(

Thanks for replying! Yes, both kitties free feed throughout the day. I only feed Misha wet food in the am.

So I ended up taking her to the vet this morning after she threw up again. They said IBS is definitely a possibility and they are doing bloodwork now to test her white blood cell count. We are switching her food to a different protein and potentially putting her on daily meds in the future. It's just so weird, it is like clockwork every year that she starts these vomiting episodes.

Where can I purchase this slippery elm bark? and is it something I just give her when she is vomiting or daily? Thanks so much!

You can get it at most health food stores and some pharmacies. This is a credible and comprehensive guide to diarrhea, probiotics, and SEB. The SEB info is about 3/4 down the page.

My Cat Has Diarrhea - What Do I Do?

Note that there is a difference between IBD and IBS. Inflammatory Bowel Disease is different than Irritable Bowel Syndrome it is explained here:

Hi guys!

Just a quick update and hoping someone can give advice on what to do next....Misha has stopped vomiting and is now on Hill's Prescription Diet Z/D for Food Allergies. She eats mainly the hard food but I will serve her a small portion of the wet canned food every morning.

During the day, she seems active other than her small cat naps but at night her episodes have grown worse when it comes to the hacking. Sometimes she will get up from a dead sleep and begin a hacking episode. They also have grown longer and more frequent. My boyfriend and I have also noticed a very nasty smell coming from her mouth when she has these episodes. It's not just bad breath, it smells like something coming up from her stomach (YUCK!). But, she never vomits. This morning she was licking her lips and her stomach sounded as if she was going to throw up, but she kept it down.

WHAT SHOULD I DO??? Do we think this is acid reflux? If so, does anyone have any suggestions? Should I get my vet to prescribe her a daily medicine?

Also, just letting you know, all her blood tests came back normal other than her white blood cell count being a little high during the time of her last puking episode. The doctor said this showed signs of sensitive stomach and food allergies due to inflammation.

REALLY NEED help on this one guys! I just want her to feel better.

@kaycianne , Awhh poor baby ...
Did the vet mention IBD or IBS?
Any seasonal allergies with hacking ? Loose tooth?

Can you video tape Misha's hacking and show your vet ?

Perhaps she is sensitive to the Z/D? Ingredients?

I would definitely call your vet and give an update

Healing vibes sent amd sure others will chime in

I have a kitty with Senstive tummy
She is doing well on Nutrisource cat and kitten in the blue bag or Fromm Game bird recipe

So,e members feed their Senstive kitties natural balance limited ingredients pea n duck with great results

Has the vet looked in Misha's mouth for a dental check?
Just trying to brain storm

Please keep us updated with your vets opinion

Ok, this is in no way me trying to bring up something to worry or scare you. BUT, we did just lose Giza to congenital kidney disease and this story of yours sounds awfully familiar. Again, this may have NOTHING similar when looked at by a vet to our story upon a a closer look at the blood work.
When they did the blood work did the check renal values?????
I would think any vet would, but in case they missed it or what have you- ask! Maybe you got the all clear, that would be AWESOME!!!! But this was Gizas pattern to kidneys not doing the job properly. Similar yes, but it could be as small as a sensitivity or allergies. But I would make sure attention was given to explore the renal values. Hugs and kisses!

Oh goodness! I was reading about kidney disease the other day and it did sound familiar, which got me very worried. Today, the vet gave me meds for acid reflux and if this doesn't help, she thinks it is definitely asthma. She thinks the asthmatic hacking is causing her to bring up some of her digested food already. Did your kitty do the hacking and have a funky smell as well when she did it? Also, how long did these symptoms last and did you know about them prior to her passing away?
