Scary morning

Hi everyone - I haven't posted at much here lately as I've wanted to. I've been in the process of building a new house the past several months (with an awesome cat/litter box room!).

Me and Mr Picasso had a scary morning this morning. Soon after I work up he vomited up clear liquids twice. Unusual for him. Then I noticed he had a very bloody rear . I immediately panicked and called the vet. They were able to get us in this morning, but my sweet little angel turned into a demon when they tried to run test on him. He was so stressed out. The vet detected a low grade heart murmur this morning too. That's the first time they've noticed anything like that. He's been to the vet several times here lately for a persistent eye issue that still isn't getting better. On one of the recent visits, we did the pro-bnp blood test and the results came back excellent with no sign of heart stress.

With the stomach issues and murmur, they wanted to take his temperature, do a fecal loop, and do do X-rays...and he would have none of it. He even bit the vet tech in his fit of rage.

The vet said they couldn't do anything with him like this, so we would have to bring him in Monday morning for light sedation so they could do all the tests.

I'm so worried. He's running around the house right now like nothing's wrong. Can cats have a murmur when they're stressed? Has anyone dealt with anything like this? My sweet Pico is three and a half years old.

I'm hoping maybe he just ate something weird and the stressed caused the murmur, but I'm fearing the worst. We lost our 6 year old Persian back in March and it was a gruesome 24 hours of seizures, paralysis, heart murmurs, and ER visits. I'm still traumatized.

What I can tell you is that it is possible to have a murmur that is difficult to hear unless the animal is stressed. So if someone is dehydrated or sick for instance, one would be able to hear the murmur more clearly. Otherwise it might be difficult to pick up on in a regular exam.

I'm so worried. My boy hasn't had any major medical issues, and I really hope this is nothing. I was so happy a couple of months ago the pro-bnp screening came back great. Since she did detect the mild murmur, we'll likely be going for an echocardiogram soon. This is just awful timing because I have to fly out of town on Monday for work. My husband will be taking Pico on Monday for the sedation and tests. I won't be home until next Saturday. It's going to make me sick not being here.

Yes, we will schedule one. I'm not sure where the vet will refer him yet. She said today though that she definitely recommended it.

I think the tummy issues have been solved. I tricked Pico into using the litter box in front of me a few minutes ago...he's easy to trick. It never fails, when I go to scoop the boxes he always plops down right in the one I'm cleaning and starts pooping. He's silly. Anyway, he pooped out a piece of bloody, white plastic and then the rest was normal. I swear. I try so hard to keep little things picked up so he won't eat them, then he still manages to find stuff to swallow!

He's still scheduled to go in on Monday for sedation so the can do some X-rays. She wanted to go ahead and do one of his chest.

Glad you think it was something he ate. Not knowing is the worst part sometimes. Hoping you have a good week and glad hubby is going to get your baby checked out so you come back to a bit less stress. Please keep us updated.

Hi there,

One of my girls, Kenzi, has a bit of a sensitive stomach, so she does tend to vomit, on occasion, for what appears to be no reason. I figure it's because she's scorfed her meal down so fast, it's caused discomfort. The back side blood however, is a concern. I've taken Kenzi to the vet on occasion, and she has twice mentioned a slight murmur, and has told me that it's completely normal, as she does tend to stress when being taken out of the home and her environment.

I would still check with your vets, but try not to worry too much. Perhaps your son is just feeling your concern, which is exacerbating his stress. I'll be sending positive vibes!

I have an update on Pico. Monday morning I dropped him off at the vet for sedation and testing before I caught a flight to California. I was worried sick all day since I was flying and didn't know what was going on! The vet called me and my husband late Monday afternoon and said she went ahead and did the abdominal X-ray and a chest X-ray. She said both looked completely normal. She also said that she was not able to hear a heart murmur at all on Monday. I asked her if we should stick with the plan to do the echocardiogram, and she said she'd like to see him back in a month for another listen. She said that stress can cause a transient murmur, especially since he was in pain due to his Target bag feast.

I will take that update as a positive one! Stress murmurs do happen, so let’s hope that is all it is. It doesn’t hurt to get an echo just to have a baseline. We will be taking our boy who just turned 1 for his scan in the near future. It will give you a piece of mind knowing either way. Happy that things are looking up. Hoping your week away goes fast.

See my former post. This is not a terrible thing! Stress murmurs can happen to the otherwise healthiest of animals! Our bodies (and those of our cats) can do some strange things under duress.

There are two main types of murmur. Physiological and structural. Structural is caused by a defect or issue within the heart itself and physiological pertains to issues outside of the heart. These are also known as benign murmurs and once the physiological problem is resolved, the murmur disappears.

It sounds like a benign murmur, given that he’s been sick this past week, but that’s great that your vet is being proactive and doing an echo to rule any more serious issues out. Hopefully it was his new found plastic bag fetish that is the cause of his problems and he’ll be alright from now on.

Thanks for checking in! We haven't had any more digestive issues (thankfully) and we went to the vet last week for another reason, and there is still no murmur, so that is good! Poor little guy, he used to go to the vet and flirt with all the nice ladies, but since he's been so much here lately he turns into a little demon as soon as we walk through the door. Last time I took he they took him back in the back for tests, and my heart just broke when I heard him letting out blood curdling screams. I thought for sure he was in terrible pain. I asked the vet when she came back in and she said, "No, we haven't done anything yet, that was just us trying to take off his shirt. He's going to have to be sedated."

Unfortunately, he's also been dealing with a nasty eye problem for the past three months that we've been to the vet about 4 times during that period. He's had flare-ups in his left eye since he was a kitten, but the were only occasional and usually went away after some ointment. This time it wasn't going away for anything. I had always assumed it was herpes, but the vet wasn't sure so she referred us to an ophthalmologist. Pico saw the ophthalmologist last week and he took one look in the eye and said, "Yep, classic herpetic lesions." He said treat a cat was more of an art than a science since you have to treat the cat without it knowing it's being treated. He prescribed famcyclovir compounded in tuna flavored elixir and told me not to give it in a syringe. He said the goal was for Pico not to know anything was amiss since stress triggers the eye. I'm having a heck of a time right now because Pico can detect that stuff mixed in anything! Ugh...

Small world my adoptee boy yesterday saw the specialist amd was prescribed pills of famciclivor amd eye specialist told me to put in I-drop
I-drop is available much cheaper at allivet than what I paid at vet office and its non prescription


Dealing with the left eye too! Go bsck for follow up in 3 weeks
I didn't know the famciclivor could be compounded , I am using a pill popper amd he hates it

Healing vibes sent !
First he had a cormeal sequestrum bsck in July
Got idoxurine amd Oflaxcin and it sloughed off on its own but caused secondary inflammAtiom we are dealing with giving famciclivor amd I-drop
Yikes pills 3x a day and drops 3x a day
I give him treats after amd he forgets sbout it

Hi there! It's been a while...but I'm back! Pico seems to be doing good. He hasn't shown any signs of the murmur in subsequent vet visits. We battled an awful eye ordeal for 6 months (so there have been lots of vet visits). He is doing much better now! I hope to have another proBNP test done this year to see if it is any different than last year. I'm always sooo worried.
