More of a general cat question...

Quite by accident while searching the internet, i stumbled across information that some essential oils & aromatherapy sprays with these oils are very toxic to cats because cats aren't able to metabolize them in their livers. As a cat mom of almost 15 years to 3 Sphynxes & 1 Devon Rex, I was shocked! Why was I just now hearing about this?

Some oils in particular, if applied directly to the cat, can kill them! (Tea Tree Oil). Thankfully, I've never owned that oil and would never apply it to a cat, but I do have other scents that I've been using every now and then in the house for YEARS (eucalyptus, orange, and lavender in particular). I've also burnt candles on and off (some of which I'm sure were paraffin wax candles). It hurts my heart to think I was exposing my cats to harmful toxins all of these years.

I've been trying to research what oils/fragrances are safe for cats but it's hard to find info. I'm going to be giving away a lot of my scented oil diffusers, as it's nearly impossible to find what ingredients are even in them (like Yankee Candle electric oil refills).

So what is your go-to funk-removers that are SAFE for CATS?

Thanks @Catzzzmeow ! I did see that article and it's interesting. I'm looking for what I can use as an air freshener that's safe for cats -- not to use on cats. Right now I'm afraid to use any of my candles or room freshener electric oil diffusers. Any specific products recommendations would be great!

@AndreaM
I use a air freshener called zero odor. It really helps and is pet safe.
I also use pet odor eliminator fabric freshener on the carpets and furniture. They are pet safe labeled.

@AndreaM I appreciate this thread. While it is scary to think you and many others have been using essential oils & aromatherapy sprays while sharing our homes with our cats, there should absolutely be more information on this that we can accurately search.

I think that most people reading this will agree that you have not damaged your cats as they have been with you for many years without showing signs of poisoning, etc. because of your use of these essential oils in your home. You are a terrific cat mom, no doubt.

@NinaGato Thanks, i checked into Zero Odor and while the reviews says it works, the safety is a little unclear. The company won't reveal the ingredients, and there's no long-term data. The comments for this blog post are pretty interesting: Modercat Must-have: Zero Odor Molecular Odor Eliminator | moderncat :: cat products, cat toys, cat furniture, and more…all with modern style

Especially the person who said it will get on the cats' paws if sprayed in the litter box...then the cat may lick its paws... I just wish they revealed the ingredients! My cats never had any reaction when I sprayed essential oils all over the house, yet science says it probably has built up in their bodies...

Might just have a stinky house for awhile!

Dont worry lil lady! I am sure Karl will be okay! I doubt Karl was sticking his nose in your diffuser plus it was probably
diluted with water right? So I am sure he will be okay!
Maybe wash your bedding and vaccuum and do some dusting to get rid of the scent.
I will you know what she says for sure!

Hmm, I don't think it's quite so dangerous from what I understood from the articles they were mostly talking about using the oil ON the cat as in actually applying it to them or around them. A slight misting in their environment shouldn't cause any damage, I'm sure your cats are safe.
