I was enjoying an unusually restful sleep, which is rare for me. Sephie was wrapped up in the blanket sandwiched between myself and my dog Lucy, who was also sleeping under the covers. Leafy, my 16 year old dog (whom I adopted when he was 15) was sleeping closer to the foot of the bed.

Suddenly, I am jolted awake by the ear piercing sound of a weather alert on my phone. I am not the kind of person that is mentally sharp when waking up suddenly. I had just enough cognitive ability to glance at my phone and see in big bold letters to immediately take shelter.

Lucy is the kind of dog that will follow me anywhere at any time so as soon as I sprung into action, she was already at my feet, eager to follow, as always. Sephie wouldn’t budge. Too cozy. I scooped her up under one arm. She went limp, annoyed by my frantic efforts to escort her to the safety of the bathroom.

Leafy was another story completely. My brain, tired and confused, was telling me to get everyone to safety immediately at any cost. Leafy, being very old and with a history of being passed from shelter to shelter far too many times in his life, resisted my efforts to bring him into the bathroom like his life depended on it. He has a severe anxiety about confinement.

Due to a medical issue, he cannot wear a collar and I remove his harness at night so the only thing I could do was grab his scruff with my one free hand and scoot him along. He was screaming and dragging his feet, avoiding being corralled into the bathroom. In hindsight, I had plenty of time, but the weather alert was mentioning imminent risk, clouds swirling, and tornadoes forming.

With myself, Sephie, Lucy, and Leafy (who was nice and calm now) locked in the bathroom, I started thinking about the best way to cover them. Sadly, I only had one towel in the bathroom and of course it had to still be damp from my pre-bed shower. I had decided that the dogs would go in the tub and I would use my body to shield them and I would toss Sephie in the cabinet under the sink.

I was prepared to act fast if the funnel touched down. In the meantime, the dogs were both laying down and Sephie was giving me the evil eye while perching on the toilet. How dare I interrupt her sleep for this!

Luckily, nobody had to go into the cabinet or the bathtub but the wind began shaking the building. The lights flickered, and the thunder was so loud, you could feel it in your chest. Reports of lightening causing fires, power outages, trees down, flooding, and homes destroyed were popping up. Once we were given the all clear to leave, Sephie immediately ran to the window to assess damages. What a night!

Attached is a picture of her being very annoyed in the bathroom and a picture of her assessing the damage from her window seat.

Whew, happy you and your babies are okay. Hopefully no more tornado warnings for a very long time, but on the bright side, now you might feel more prepare just in case.
