Severe Mastitis?

Hi everyone, I recently rescued a sphynx from a breeder. She develops “sores,” that the breeder told me she always got. Her last litter was in the summer so she’s had the condition some time. I took her to the vet as soon as I got her, where she was diagnosed with severe mastitis that has surfaced all around the same area (and shoulder?) and ruptured, causing large pea sized holes. The breeder told me she just lets them heal up. You can see significant scar tissue on the belly photo. She was given convenia by the vet 5 days ago. I have heard the recommendation of cabbage leaves but have heard controversy on convenia as a way to treat this? Has anyone had experience with this condition of similar appearance?

Hello there , oh my goodness gracious me ! How totally horrific ! This poor poor little girl must have gone through seven agony’s and my heart aches for her ! I breast feed my three children and I know how sore it gets to send your milk back (( that’s the term used here )) so I have no idea how painful mastitis is . God bless you for taking this little girl and getting her completely sorted by a vet at least now she will be given loving tender care in her recovery
Please keep us up dated in her progress in getting back to being in 100% health and fitness
Xxx❤️❤️❤️

Wow, I am shocked the breeder just let them heal. They say this can be very painful for cats...and cats are very tolerant of pain. So glad you took her to the vet and got her started on an antibiotic. I did read up about the cabbage compresses. I say give it a shot, you have nothing to lose by trying to help her heal faster.

I look forward to you sharing your beauty with us in her forever home.

UPDATE: Ruby has formed a new hole. The worst one yet. She has gone to a new vet and they are baffled. Also found out the breeder had lied about her medical records. She only gave me bits and pieces and I got them all from the vet. Apparently she has had mycoplasma, chlamydia, panleukemia, AND bordatella. She has extremely abnormal blood work and was hospitalized losing weight, vomiting, dehydrated, diarrhea...the breeder demanded her back and never returned her to the vet. That was 2 years ago. She continued to breed her regardless. She has had blood work done and submitted photos to a feline dermatologist. I am so nervous about the results. I’m scared it will be a terminal fatal condition. I recently spent months trying to save a rescued kitten and spent well over 2500$ trying to save her and she passed away. I ran myself into debt doing so and didn’t even imagine adopting this girl would have so many problems. I’m considering a go fund me as her vet care is most important and she deserves this. Overall the vets have said she just is not very healthy for many reasons. She was a workhorse the breeder ran into the ground and I’m disgusted. Please send prayers and positive vibes to my Ruby girl. She needs all the fight she can get Any further advice or recommendations on what this could be are greatly appreciated.

I agree some sort of flushing of the areas with betadine, chlorhexidine, or vetricyn would be a good idea to help prevent infection. I really do not know what it could be though if it isn’t mastitis.

What a b$%#* to repeatedly put this cat through something so painful. I hope you report her.

I am located in Akron Ohio and the closest university veterinarian is in Columbus which is 2.5 hours from me. She was taken to a 2nd vet who is minimal service. This vet pulled out a dermatology book and suggested an autoimmune condition and gave me an ointment. I wasn’t very thrilled with that so I took her to a third vet. This vet had suggested it could be a different type of mastitis but was honestly baffled, she hadn’t seen something with this appearance before. She submitted photos to a feline dermatologist and took bloodwork which I should have results by Wednesday. She suggested sedating her and re-opening the surroundings of the hole and stitching it shut but wants to wait on results.

The breeder also did not give me a full veterinary record. The newest vet had the original vet fax all her records where I discovered a lot of harsh truth. Ruby was first pregnant at 1 year old and had babies. She then fell very ill. She had very abnormal bloodwork and was losing weight quickly and vomiting. She was hospitalized for 2 days, at which the breeder demanded her back against strong medical advice not to. After that, the breeder made her have 5 more litters. (The breeder told me 6 litters so who knows if it was actually more.) The records show she has has mycoplasma, chlamydia, panleukemia AND bordatella. I am trying not to get too hopeful with the results coming. I’m very scared for her and hope there is something the vets can do.

The first vet gave her convenia which helped her high temp subside and is now normal. The third vet started her on Clavamox 2x daily she’s been on since Wednesday. The hole has improved some. I’ve attached photos of the hole now and another photo that shows a purple spot above a pink spot. The purple spot is what it looks like before another hole opens so I’m bracing myself... the pink spot looks suspicious. You can also see significant scar tissue where the breeder let many other holes heal. I just cannot believe this pathetic breeder. When I picked ruby up, she even had a nursing mom who was pregnant again. It’s absolutely disgusting...

I’ve also attached some photos of how good she is getting her clothes on! She is wearing baby onesies since they have sleeves and they cover the holes better so she doesn’t lick them, and it’s been working well. I’ve been cleaning the hole about 3x daily with a saline solution.

She also has a snapped canine tooth which the breeder “has no idea how that happened!” The vet says it’s a very durable tooth so it’s very suspicious that it’s snapped like this. I think there’s a lot I wasn’t told. She needs a dental and the tooth needs pulled but the vet wants to wait until this is resolved first, of course. Apparently she also might be pregnant. The vet doesn’t feel babies but we aren’t out of the woods yet. I really hope she isn’t, it isn’t fair to her :(

You are her angel ((((hugs))))) for all you are doing for her .
She has the kindest sweetest soulful face
Plesse give her extra healing vibes head smooches from me
Sending a lair full of prayers for her test results
And hope that she is not pregnant

I can't imagine what the heck happened with the tooth ...
this poor sweety
Wamted to share that if the Clavamox doesn't work ( doesnt in some Sphynx)
I had great results with doxcycline but would need to check with the vet if this would be a proper one .

Big hugs to you with the vet experiences phew ...
Let's hope you get some answers and relief for sweet Ruby

Do you have any vetericyn spray ? I like that it is non toxic .
worked well with my crew as well as a nasty infection on my dogs paw after a lump was surgically removed .

You are doing everthing for Ruby .. She knows love because of you for the first time in her life .
Love her onesie!

Thinking of you and Ruby daily with positive healing vibes
Following very closely for updates

Ps have they listened to her heart for any murmurs ? Be sure to have them out in big letters No Ketamine anesthesia ! ( it can have a rebound effect on the heart if there is an undetected underlying heart condition)
My vet uses isolfurane .

Hugs

They thought they heard a mild murmur but said it also could have been stress.
Her bloodwork came back okay, a few levels low but nothing too abnormal. She will be referred to the dermatologist who will need to do upwards of 1000$ of testing before finding a treatment plan. They suspect mycoplasma. They said it could be a life long management condition.

@jstone hopeful a stress murmur from the vet visit . Some, tie,s on rechecks it is gone.
Nothing too abnormal on her blood work is a positive

As for the dermatologist - when I took my boy to the eye specialist I took one step at a time .
They said it could be a 3k bill - yikes -
I asked to do the least instructive and work from there- $350 with a change of meds and al cleared up

So all paws crossed with the dermatologist consult
Here is a search result for mycoplasma
Search results for query: Mycoplasma
@Cinafina may have supportive info if Ruby is diagnosed with mycoplasma

With my crew of adoptees everthing is pre existing sooo
I got a "care credit " card thst gives promos and can be used for human stuff
I have posted about it in the past
If you are financially on top of things it for me has been a life saver .
My vet even went an 18 mos promo on one of my larger bills

Most vets will do over thr standard over $200 6 mos promo
Over a certain amount it is often 12 , 18 or 24 mos
I manage mine meticulously - never paid a dime of interest
Just wanted to share .

My gosh this girl has the best of love and care
with you

Lair prayers sent For a diagnosis and successful treatment
Here is a link other members have mentioned mycoplasma
Search results for query: Mycoplasma

Of course following vet closely
Head smooches to Ruby and ((hugs))) to you
You are her angel

Oh my god the poor darling, she is just beautiful. I know that you have your hands full with ruby, but pls consider reporting this "breeder" to the humane society or other authorities in your area. Some people are so disgusting and cruel. Is there any stuff draining out of the holes that she gets?

Another possible cause?

So who is the breeder? I'm disgusted and I think her name needs to be out.

I can see why Ruby was being bred so much; she is truly beautiful.
