I just put my deposit on a baby sphynx that doesn't even exist yet. Am I crazy now? Hopefully if daddy sphynx scans clear on HCM (Mommy sphynx already has) there will be kitties in the spring, and ready by the summer. This will be the most I've ever invested into anything that isn't a need to live. When I get all of the info on the King and Queens pedigree I will have all of my favorite sphynx owners help me decide on the perfect name (If the husband aka Cat hater, doesn't come up with a good one first.)

*****squee***** Naw, you are not crazy, it's how all we sphynx lovers roll! So exciting! I can't wait to see pics of your new baby

Edit: In my delirium to get my baby girl in two days, I didn't realize that baby hasn't even been conceived yet AND no HCM screening for daddy. Now THAT is concerning.

I would love to see the peds when you get them.
Why did you put a deposit on kitten that does not exist yet.
Breeders take deposits after the kittens are born.

That seems a little odd, I am also interested in why a deposit was needed before kittens were born, or the dad was even scanned! Exciting still though and can't wait to see pictures

Congratulations, but why would a breeder accept a deposit for a kitten that hasn't even been conceived yet?

How exciting. I'm with the others - I would have waited until the little bundles of joy were born but hopefully all will fall into place. Obtain a receipt of some sort!!! Ya never know!

Exciting but as the others have said I would have waited until the babies are born, there is always the chance that they may not produce a litter. A little risky for me, I don't take any deposits until kittens are 6 weeks old.

Me too.

Sadly there is too much risk with taking a deposit before a litter is even conceived. What if they don't get pregnant? What if she loses them before they are born? What if she loses them after? What happens if they are all boys and you wanted a girl? What if none of them are 'right' for you, or don't 'feel' like your kitten.

If the deposit is refundable or you can put it towards another litter then that's a little different, I guess. But I like to see the babies before I reserve one.

Excited for you that you are going to get a baby next year though, even if my post is a bit of a downer :)

Thank you all for your concern! I trust this breeder very much. Granted I haven't discussed the "what ifs" about it. Such as if daddy dont scan clear, or if there are no kittens, or if there are no girls. But the breeder has 2 other breeding partners, so im sure if something happened I would still get a kitten. I didn't HAVE to put the deposit down so early, but for 1,300 I asked her if I could go ahead and start paying, that way by next summer i'll have my kitty paid off. I gave myself a pat on the back for such smart thinking (lol) . Along with paying a deposit so early, I get pick of the litter when kittens are born. We have lots of contact through e-mail and facebook, and I am making payments through pay pal. So im not worried about any of the whole, you didn't pay me/ or I don't know what your talking about.

I hate to be the harbinger of doom and gloom yet again, but money has changed hands, the what-if's haven't been hammered out, and there are more than 2 people potentially involved. Please forgive me Avasmommy but that scenerio is ripe for something going wrong. Personally I would have made payments to a savings account or an envelope stuffed beneath my mattress before I'd start paying a breeder for a kitten that isn't even close to existing yet.

I'm glad you're confident and I do hope things go well for you and that you get the beautiful baby sphynx that you dream of.

I agree with marlene here, though I do hope things turn out well for you and your kitten. Have you visited the breeder? I visited, talked through phone and email, and still didn't give up a dime until I took my cat home and had papers in hand.

Also just curious, are they all sold for $1300? I have known breeders to choose prices based on "quality" of the kittens... but of course she has not had any yet so how would she know? I really hope all goes well for you! Just make sure of everything before you pat yourself on the back!

From what I understand, the price of 1300 is for any/all kittens. All of them are fixed/micro chipped when ready to go home. I did find out after I added her on FaceBook, that she is a member of Sphynxlair. I do trust her, and its one of those things, if worse comes to worse, I will go to her boss. But, I trust her, and I feel very confident that she will be very helpful in my "first sphynx" experience. Since I was the first one to put a deposit down I get pick of the litter. I also asked her about about being able to show the kitten if we were to move to a more "populace" state, and she said that she would help me pick out the best kitten for that. On ending this, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, and safe travels.
