Hi Everyone!

I have a 14 year old Peterbald named Sophie, whom I recently rescued, and whom also happens to have extremely dry skin, particularly after bathing. She gets very dry, scaley spots, especially on her back, and around her neck, which, if no moisturiser is applied, she itches to the point of causing abraisions and the skin gets cracked and obviously painful.

I use coconut oil before bathing, and as a spot moisturiser after, but very sparingly on the latter, in areas where she can't lick, in order to avoid tummy upset. Seems to be working.

I have also been gradually switching from her previous all dry (less than mediocre) diet (that the previous owner was feeding) to wet, prescription diet, with all meat, no grains, etc, recommended by the vet, which eventually may switch to all raw ((also recommended by the vet) in order to hydrate Sophie more.

Still, I would love any recommendations for exfoliation of dry skin, mild, moisturising bath wash, and any other dry skin remedies/ moisturisers anyone would like to offer.

Thanks!
Tori (AKA Sophie's new Mom)

How often are you bathing your kitty? Try to extend the time between baths, two weeks if possible. that gives your kitty time to build up her natural sebum (natural body oil) which keeps the skin moist.

Hey my peterbald can be dry also. I make sure to add fish oil to his diet (omega 3).
I use douxo chlorhexidine by sogeval. That seems to heal him up when he gets bumps. There are medicated premoistened pads from the same company called Douxo Chlorhexidine 3% PS Pads. I use those for touch up spots if Loki scratches his neck up.
These are my suggestions.

oh and I forgot aloe. I get animal aloe from the heath food store and slather that on him when he is dry because if he eats aloe it won't hurt him at all.

I remember reading Aloe is very toxic to cats. :ThumbsDown:ASPCA has it listed under toxic for cats as well. What is animal Aloe?

It's when they chew on the actual plant then it's poisonous to felines. The juice of an Aloe plant has many healing properties... Here's the link:

In the News: Aloe Vera and Cats - We Love Aloe!

http://www.ralphmoss.com/html/aloevera.shtml
The above link did a study on animals with tumors and sarcomas on cats and it's very promising... Instead of only weeks to live, they lived almost a year extra...

I just googled "animal aloe for felines and found a bunch of information! They even have used it for FIP and it worked....

I only bathe her when she looks dirty; every two, or three weeks. I've been using coconut oil, which is helping a LOT!

You can try using bath gloves when you give her her bath also. Just be sure the shampoo is not to0 drying.

Thanks! I got bath gloves, and they freaked Sophie out. I saw a bath video on Youtube, where someone used an exfoliating cloth. Have you, or anyone else tried this? I'm concerned this may irrritate her skin, similarly to plastic feeding bowls.

In the mean time, her skin is looking much better after swithcing her food (gradually) and litter to unscented clumping clay.

Thanks again for all your helpful advice!

Ask your vet for Sebolux by Virbac. It works on my kitties red bumps and has moisturizer in it.

I took her to the vet, for a long overdue check up (after having rescued her) and she (the vet) gave her an anti-inflamitory shot for both the skin irritation, and her major dental issues (which have now been fixed).

Outside of dry skin, remedied by switching her food to wet, all meat, switching her litter to fragrance free (takes a bit more cleaning of the litter box, but i clean it 2-3 times a day anyway, so no stinkies, even with the fragrence free letter), spot moisturising with coconut oil, and baths every other week, Sophie is now a happy, healthy, and much more energetic 14 year old sphynx. YAY!

Ask your vet about Aveeno Oatmeal baths. It may help to soothe her skin when she has some raw spots from scratching. There is also an ear wash that doubles as an antibiotic for wounds. The name escapes me @ the moment. Maybe someone will chime in with the name. Keep us posted.
