Hi everyone! I recently adopted my lil Bambino guy, Yoda. he is 1yr & 8 months old and only about 6lbs

I was wondering if any of you had any experience feeding Smalls cat food? It seems like an overall good diet as far as ingredients etc. and the price isn’t bad, considering how pricey wet food is! However I’m not sure about the recall history.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

- I’m also taking dry food recommendations

Not much personal experience, as I've had them for less than 2 weeks now, but the breeder who they originally came from recommends an open feed policy, meaning leaving a full bowl of kibble out at all times, and then a "quarter can" of wet every day.

Her argument is that these guys are trying to maintain a body temp of 101, without the fur. And they tend to learn towards muscular no matter how much you feed them.

I'm using Taste of the Wild's Rocky Mountain kibble, as it has a high (>40%) protein content, and a cat -expert friend of mine says that it has drastically reduced litterbox issues.

I've been doing four meals a day, using an automated feeder, And so now I'm thinking that I might try to find a cheaper kibble for the open bowl , use this taste of the wild stuff in the automatic feeder, and still give them some what on occasion. I have no idea if that's a good idea or not. But that's my current plan :)

I've only been looking at high protein, no grain dry cat food so far, so I don't have a real good idea of what price ranges are.

I live in a skyrise, and while our package room has a freezer, I think the bigger problem with a program like smalls, would be me remembering to get it from the package room on time! :)

I’d say free feeding is okay for kittens! I personally wouldn’t recommend it for adults, as I don’t like doing it, but I know there are cats out there who it works for! I guess just figure out what works for your babies and go from there :)

Yoda has been on a breakfast & dinner schedule and he’s doing great! He gets breakfast around 6-7am and dinner at around 5. I do want to watch his weight because he has such small legs, it’s important for him to not become overweight as it can cause unnecessary strain on his little limbs & spine.

Here’s a better picture of how short he is LOL

Goodness! He looks like he might have some ferret stock in his ancestry. Some dashing anthropomorphic rogue pirate, perhaps?

At this point, I know the stock my goblins came from, and have seen pictures of their parents, fed on an open feed system, so I'm gonna try it, and maybe weigh them regularly.

It's been only half a day, but they're already a lot less grumpy, and more active.

My debate right now is if I want to track how much food they're consuming, so I can budget properly.

@Babyoda , welcoming you and adorable Yoda to the lair family! he is adorable! I personally don't have experience with that brand. love his name.( I was blessed with 2 Yoda's , a girl and a boy, ie my screen name :) )
tagging @Sheldon13 and others.
I free feed portioned . dry and 1/4 can wet.
for years feeding nutrisource cat and kitten food (no recalls) , purina pro plan urinary focus whitefish canned. ages now 10,12,13 no vet visits skin or poo issues. lots of great food choices out there . there is a previous thread on food. the top right search box helpful for specifics.

Just found this website, which ranks Smalls as their top choice of food to give Sphynxs. The articles look human-generated, and they state that they bought the foods they tested at retail price, and their results were all lab tested.
Generally a good read, too.

I'm probably going to start researching some topics by starting with this site.

Thank you so much! I was feeding my last baby boy (not a Sphynx) Nutrisource as well and he really seemed to do well on it! I might try that out for Yoda, I haven’t quite figured out if he’s a picky eater or not so hopefully all goes well, lol!
I do have a picky senior Siamese girl, it’s a hassle trying to get her to try anything new at all.

I really like Cats.com for a lot of good insight! I’ve been referring to their sight for years!
I see that they do rank it a top quality food, and I really like it other than the recall history (Cats.com ranks it a 4/10). I guess I’ll try it out and see how my baby does on it, but I’m thinking another contender might be Nutrisource.

I really appreciate having this discussion. I am so overwhelmed with analysis paralysis over food options.

Luckily, my goblins seem to be the least picky eaters I've ever met. Unluckily, they are also the least discriminate eaters I've ever met. I caught them trying to eat my pill box after the first time they saw me take my heart medications. "But Fäthër, we saw you put this in your mouth. Clearly, it must be food. Why do you hate us so, Fäthër?"

@Babyoda , my batman is extremely picky and a dry food addict , age 13 now. he loves nutrisource cat and kitten food. I also put out a small bowl of hills urinary hairball dry he likes too.
my mom switched her furbaby to Nutrisource too. I get online petflow or k9 cuisine. this is the one they like. mine are 10,12, and 13 and a 12 yr old bengal. no skin or poo issues, can feed n go.

keep us updated! all paws are family, awh. love to see pic and name of your senior siamese. I grew up with adoptee siamese. my first siamese was heide as child. she was like a little puppy dog followed me to bed every night.. and a talker!
