I'm new to sphinx so I hope my skin will get a littler thicker over time. HOW do you put up with people saying that your cat is ugly. Some people have been so rude. Now I'm not delusional, I knew when I got her that not everyone would love an hairless cat! Do you get offended? I did not think I would. But let me tell ya I am offended. I don't think people understand that I love the thing they are bashing. I put her on my face book page and I got stuff like "That cat is soooo ugly that it actually scares me" and many others..How RUDE:Angry:.. It is making me more upset than I thought it would. Do you ever get use to it? Guess I will just have to learn to live with it..

Jinx, I think we all go through that, especially in the beginning when we first get our sphynx. My boyfriend used to come over my house, asking, "Where's the ugly cat?" And then I had to hear all the comments from family and friends..."Ewwww, that cat is ugly (weird, creepy, etc....you get the picture)" or "Is that a chihuahua?" or "That's not a cat, that's an alien!" Eventually, though, you get a thicker skin....I now laugh to myself when people make rude comments about Piglet, because I know that as soon as they spend a few minutes with her, they'll fall in love with her and forget about how "ugly" she is. Nowadays, the same people who used to call Piglet ugly are now telling me they wish they had a cat just like her!

I flat out tell them not to post $hit on my facebook that is negative about my cat! Yes I get offended. I usually delete the comment and get over it after I tell them to shut their face. I really do not like dogs but when they post their pics about how cute their pups are I just dont say anything, if I cant find something nice to say then I dont say it and I think people should respect the same rules. Its just the "right thing to do". But yeah, you will have to thicken your skin a little. I've had to learn that much. I do get really offended. I almost drove over to a friends house one night to kick her a$$! And I'm not really like that, but I just had to talk myself down. lol Goodluck with your friends learning their manners.

You need to ignore the jerks.
When I first got Cleo people said some pretty mean things about her.
I almsost told a lady off at the vet once.
I show my sphynx and most people that come to the shows want to touch them and love them.
A few of made nasty remarks.
I have mine on my facebook and people tell me I ahve nice dogs.
There will always be people that hate sphynx.
Cleo has been called a rat before and always get asked if they bite at shows.
Just this weekend there most have been at least 100 people that had to touch my cats.

That the funny thing, I'm not like that. I knew it was coming, I didn't think it would bug me. I'm a little surprised that it does. When someone tells you your pet is so ugly that there eyes are burning, I think it's hard to not get offended.

Some people say that and then they meet the cats and change their minds! They get won over. I do get upset though because I'm so protective of him. My partners granny asked why my cat didn't go out and I said he was hairless, her response was 'EUGH and then pulled a horrible face. There is no need! It did hurt. They are such sweet cats

I just tell them I see beauty in other ways. If they keep making making jokes about my babies then I tell them their kids are funny looking! How does that feel?

*hugs* you get use to it. while i don't have my sphynx, yet, i have rats, and a "pit bull", so i am use to mean, hurtful, rude, and ignorant comments. normally, i just let them wash over me. if they can't see beyond their preconceived notions of beauty, then they don't deserve the love of such a fabulous animal. their loss.

i will admit, though, i have gotten angry and made snarky comments before. i was once out with one of my rats (my hairless girl, amy, no less) on my shoulder. we were minding our own business, looking at bird toys, when this woman started SCREAMING about how nasty amy was, how dirty and gross, and how she should be KILLED before she gave the woman's kids the plague. i turned around and started "freaking" out- "oh my gawd it's a KID! it's so sticky and germy and gross! get it away from my precious rat before it makes her sick!" yea... not nice, but i sure felt better!

..LOL...I bet the was great..Let me tell you, I'd kiss your rat before a lot of kids I see..(and I have 2, kids not rats)

I'm use to ignorant, I have Great Danes and we cant go anywhere with out ignorant...Is that a horse? can I ride him? what would you want that for? I could go on all day.
It's the rude and hurtful that I take issue with.

One of the rudest things someone said was EWWWW! Does it taste like chicken? My hubby and I laugh about it now and it is a private joke.

Yes, it is rude, and NO, I DON'T CARE ABOUT IT
I love Sphynx, actually those are the only cats I love. and in my opinion - they are beautiful. but I haven't gotten any bad responses about my cat, even opposite- many of those who don't like naked cats, say that mine is actually beautiful  (but that's not in virtual reality, thats when people come visit us!) my dad is a very good example - he wasn't very excited when I told I'm having Sphynx (he was all- oh, no, they are ugly etc..), but when I visit dad now, he always asks- is Alexx with you? he just loves him :D and admits - he is really beautiful.
so, I just don't care if someone said something! taste is different.

ps; maybe it's the place I'm living (Sphynx here are kinda exotic) but I was very surprised, that I got more positive than negative, even from old neighbours (i mean- old ladies and men, about 70 years old), they came to me and was so excited about my- cat or dog? :D

I try not to take it personally, Jinx. Many of my co-workers put pictures of my cats on their facebook or myspace after I bring them to work. Then, of course, the nasty messages start from their friends and relatives. And I generally reply:

"What do you mean ugly? Everyone loves a bald pussy!".

I saw it on a shirt made for a sphynx a few years back. I don't think I could say it any better. And it does generally lighten the mood.

People just aren't used to seeing hairless anythings. I used to get comments on my hairless rats. I'm sure once I get an Xolo, more comments will come. People just think of it as "weird" and most people cannot react in an acceptable manner.

That's a good one! Is the Xolo the mexican hairless dog? I have looked at those and they look incredible especially the larger ones.

My husbands family was the same way when I was talking about getting one. Creepy, ugly, rat etc. Even when my husband saw pics he was not impressed, then he went to the cattery and a few jumped on his back when he bent over, and things changed. Now he is just so in love with them it is fun. His family was leery until they met them and now they are all wanting to babysit them. Even his 90 year old grandma who does not like cats just adores them and tells everyone about them. She walked in on Twitch using the toilet during her toilet training and has told everyone she knows.

I think people don't know they are being rude when they say things like that. I guess it is the talk before you think. I had a lady in the pet store tell me that Twitch was ugly and looked like a gremlin. This coming from a lady holding a pug. He tried to sniff her and she hissed at him and slapped him across the face.

I guess they are not everyones cup of tea but I don't think I would ever have a furry one again.

I try not to get upset when people are rude to Lemmy, but it is hard!! He is my kid...naked or not. Personally, I just let people talk and if they say something ignorant, I just ignore them.

Creepy, ugly, rat etc.

My own boss even refers to my cats as "rat-like", however, she's the first person that'll support having Sphynx for their personality. She swears of my 3 pitbulls and 3 sphynx that I absolutely have the most well-behaved, tolerant animals with the most unique personalities. Not everything that is said is rude, afterall, and one must find positive points where one can.

They're one of the few hairless breeds of dogs. I think they look amazing.

ETA: I like a bigger dog. I'm not at all a fan of having a really small dog in my household (after all, the cats wear my three Pitbulls out as it is! lol). Xolos come in three sizes, the standard being my favorite. If nothing else, one can appreciate how much you'll safe on grooming costs!!!!

Yeah they are pretty amazing looking. I have not done much research on them but what I have read seems very positive. My husband is a big dog guy and down the road would like to add a dog to the family. We both travel too much right now but hopefully I can get off the road soon. Three pit bulls, wow that is a handful. Do the cats rule the house?

They most certainly do. The dogs just let them do whatever they'd like. Baldwin plays harder than any cat should have the right to do...especially when it comes to the dogs. And, bless their hearts, they're so gentle and tolerant of him, lol. Buck and Buffy play, but they generally wait until the dogs are asleep. They're sneaky!!

Sami, one of these days we need to get Baldwin and Walter together and let them wear each other out!! Walter has yet to meet his match...Baldwin sounds like he just might be it. (Does he sleep with one eye open, too? Afraid he's going to miss something if he stops to rest for even a second?)

Generally both eyes open. Practically ready to spring at any moment. I get days where he springs across my face and off on to the floor and he and Buck and running for all they're worth. For what purpose? Who knows. I'm damn sure not out of bed and ready to feed anyone. But, of course, Buffy stays where it's safe and let's the boys run around and make fools of themselves.

Baldwin came to visit me in the shower last night. And, being the mean mama that I am, I pulled him in, soaped him up, rinsed him off and let him be free. By the time I was done showering, Baldwin was back in the bathroom...I suspect he'd forgotten all about his bath not 10 minutes prior. lol.
