Hi there! Question for anyone who can help. My baby (Sanji’s) skin is super red, dry and flakey. I only bathe him bi weekly but it always happens after the bath when his skin gets bad. Coconut oil doesn’t seem to help. I tried to put some on today and it seemed to help a little but then went straight back to flakey dry and red.

I used earth bound hypoallergenic shampoo and only use a quarter size if not less to wash him. Before I wash him I loosen up the dirt with coconut oil. This is what the breeder said to do. He did spend some time near the window the other day when I came home and saw how bright it was through the curtains I closed the blinds to avoid sun burn but not sure how long he could have been laying in it.

What can I do to get his skin back to normal?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

@mamajjean , welcoming you and Sanji to the lair family. All paws are family. Overbathing can cause skin issues.

Do you use exfoliating gloves biweekly too? It may be too much and causing irritation. The earthbath shampoo is popular in group.
Many of us stopped using coconut oil as it can clog pores. I personally would spread apart baths to give skin chance to settle and do its own thing, no coconut oil, no lotions. With baths, rinse and rinse again. We are here for you. Members will surely chime in. Following for updates, hugs n head smooches.

Thank you so much for responding & being here! I don’t use exfoliating gloves just my hands. Would you say to bathe him once a month instead? And how long do you think it’ll take for his skin to be normal again? It’s been about 5 days since his last bath and his skin seems to be getting dryer

Could it also be food allergies by any chance?

My vet had told me to only bathe my kitty when her skin starts to feel greasy. I only bathe her around once every six weeks. I wash her face with warm water and clean her ears every other day.

@mamajjean , checking in for updates. agree with catzzzmeow and Annejo12 replies.

could be a combination of too frequent bathing and over sunbathing in windows. Many members use window tint film.
it's only been 5 days, it may take a little long for skin to balance.

have you changed food recently? laundry detergent? use fabric softener or dryer sheets? does your baby wear clothing? that can cause skin issue too sharing these links:

I personally would sop bathing for a couple of weeks and let the try to balance out on it’s own.
Bathing your Sphynx Cat Every cat is different, but over bathing can really cause more issues. I only use coconut oil on their noses to get the heavier gunk off.
Gotcha! Thank you for responding, I really appreciate having forums like this. I had brought him to a vet just for a routine check up about about a month ago and it was insane how much he didn’t know about this breed. I ended up going to a different vet because of that. Love the community this site provides, it helps a lot!

He is doing a little better today. His skin seems to be a little less red so hopefully it continues! As for food, nothing new. He alternates between fancy feast, tiki cat and reveal, dental treats and churu as a choice of snack. Someone recommended added salmon oil or like an omega oil but I’m going to wait until this gets a little better before I try it.

He loves being a naked baby lol so only use sweaters when I have to. Usually fall winter and early-mid spring. Laundry, I use hypoallergenic stuff cause my skin is also sensitive.

Definitely going to look into getting a window tint. I found him sneaking behind the blinds today, luckily as soon as he did it cause I heard him. He loves the window.

Good to know! I think I am going to have to go longer than two weeks with him cause he doesn’t produce a lot of oil. I may be able to get away with once a month if not more like you and do 6 weeks. We shall see! His skin looks a little better today.

@mamajjean , awh, baby Sanji is very photogenic! glad his skin looks better today. he reminds me of my Batman and Tobylove.

sharing I can go a long time between full spa days using trizultra w/keto on cotton swissper rectangular pads for body wipe downs. I have been using for nearly 20 yrs on my crew of nakids and pups for cleaning ears. my vet got me hooked on it.
t is dual purpose as a skin flush, so I do body wipe downs 2x a week and clean around nails. I use everywhere except faces. really gets an brown off under armpits, bellies, legs, tail, chins.
keep us updated! hugs n head smooches.

oh Sanji is sneaky sunshine seeker, window tint may be a good idea!

Glad you are finding this community helpful. My vet has experience with the breed now, but we were his first years ago. I think he has learned a lot from our crew and “nuggets of knowledge” I share with him on vet visits over the years no doubt have helped other clients of his. Unless you actually have a Sphynx they don’t understand the day in the life stuff of having a Sphynx. From ear wax, to maybe having black teeth due to oils etc. LOL.

Your baby certainly is photogenic…looking forward to you remaining active in here and sharing often. Glad things are already starting to look better.

My Lilith has had angry skin since we switched her from Zymox enzymes shampoo to Renewed Pet sensitive skin cuz I felt her skin was a little flakey. But she's gotten worse and worse with the nonstop liking and scratching and ended up taking her to the vet today. Doc said she has Ear infection, and was told to use Dermabenss shampoo for her dry angry skin. Weird part was they want me to bathe her 2-3 times a week til her skin is better . I bathed her last night and today she was all orange and bumps and she's scratching on anything and everything to include our sofa pillow edges. She looks like she had eczema

@jaxx , awh , healing vibes to sweet Lilith. do you have a photo of her skin to share ? did they swab her ear to confirm infection? give ear meds? some not familiar with the ear grime sphynx get bcz they have no ear hairs are sometimes mistaken for infections.

I learned here need to rinse and rinse again or they can brown/orange quickly.

@Catzzzmeow your thoughts on bathing 2-3x a week with Dermabenss shampoo?

@jaxx , to answer your question:
for years I have been using Trizultra w/keto to clean ears and do body wipe downs , **everywhere except face. (use warm wet cotton wash cloth on face). the price of the trizultra w/keto increased. my vet carries it and I get it online allivet etc with autoship discounts can remind self to cancel /pause when arrives). It will always be my go to for ear cleaning and body wipe downs. My vet got me hooked on it 20 yrs ago. it comes in 2 sizes.
dual purpose as ear cleaner and skin flush so I use for wipe downs. * I dont actually flush ears. I wet the cotton swisspers with qtips on top then gently clean ears. (rectangle swisspers for body, round for ears and around nail beds is what I do for a routine). I wore a little head lamp to help me see better where I was cleaning in the ears.

following closely for updates on sweet Lilith. hugs n head smooches

*** I always suggest to check with your vet before trying new products .

sharing : chewy has 1st time autoship discount , and if a product does not work you can call them. they have excellent customer service.

Thank you so much ☺️. Will start doing the wipe downs with that product. I don't like using the wipes cuz even if it's for sensitive skin, non drying" it still dries her up.

Yes they did a swab on her, gave her tresaderm drops every 12 hrs for 2 weekss and prednisolone that I gotta pick up at pharm today. I bathed her with that dermabenss shampoo, her skin is way better and less orangy that usual. She hasn't been licking as much her skin, how ever she's shaking her head more than usual last night and today, guessing be sure if the drops

She's never had these spots on her body, not sure if it's just sunspots or post dry patch blemishes

@jaxx , tresaderm/pred worked will with my furbaby years ago. the head shaking like you said probably from the drops..
my two darker boys get get pigmentation spots. Sometimes over sunbathing I can see on my TobyLove... some members use window tint. I moved the cat tree to an indirect light window.

any change of food or treats? change of litter brand? scented /unscented?

My Batman has a a spot over his eye are that looks like that. He gets it from rubbing his face on the throw rug and cat tree sisal.
does Lilith rub her face /head on any objects?
so glad the Dermabenss shampoo is working.

following closely for updates. hugs n head smooches adorable Lilith.
*I always recommend checking with vet about products you are using to make sure okay to use on your baby.
My vet carries Trizultra w/keto and it is my go to for nearly 20 yrs.

She does sunbathe... I'm gonna have to move her window perch to a less sunny spot . Only thing changed was the Renewedpet shampoo, conditioner and nail cleaner kit. It was recommended by a coworker who has nakies, then again they bathe theirs every week . But even bathing mine every 2 weeks was irritating her. She uses unscented litter, instinct rabbit.
