Genevieve is my first naked and had an URI when I got her at twelve weeks. She still has sneezing that produces a sizable amount of mucus. Has anyone
had the experience of a lingering URI? She has been on three full courses of antibiotics. I am not sure what to do next.

Sorry to hear that! Have you spoken to your vet about these tests yet; FIV, FeLV, Herpes, Calici, throat and eye swabs and blood work?

It's a good thing to combine with neutering or spaying since they're already under from the anesthetic.

I'm still giving Butchie his doxycycline so I don't know if that will sort his issues yet, not even halfway through a 2 week course. If I'm not mistaken, you have already been giving Genevieve doxy?

Very strange that it’s still lingering that badly after 3 courses of antibiotics. I would recommend running tests to make sure everything else is clear as advised above! Best of luck, and keep us posted... Hope she feels better soon

Suggest having your vet perform a PCR test....this should help narrow things down and give your vet the best course of meds to prescribe.

Clavamox is your best bet when it comes to URI’s, I’m dealing with a potential one with my new kitten right now and see the vet tomorrow but clavamox works wonders for some of my other pets that have had one in the past

@Genevieve723 checking in for updates
I saw you mention wheezing in another post
Is this new symptom ? would update vet

Forgot to ask what litter do you use ?
Some can't handle clay litter as
@NinaGato mentioned .

Types of Litter

others Members posted good results with a different type unscented litter too

(Also I do not recommend using the sprinkle litter box Deodorizers makes litter dusty )

Great suggestion, but I currently use the Breeze system so there isn't any dust. After four, maybe five antibiotics, I took her off all of them and have given her children's vitamin C and sardines each day and she seems better. I also have a humidifier going so that her nasal passages do not get dry. From the reading, I've done because she was so young when she got the URI that she may have damage to her nasal passages and also have issues. I feel better now that she seems better. Thanks for all of your help.

Sorry, I didn't read all of the wonderful suggestions. Clavamox was the first antibiotic, then Doxycycline, then Zithromax, then clindomyacin and I have lost track of what the last one is. I just had her texted for FIV, FeLV and coronavirus -all were negative. I am also putting l-lysine on her afternoon food. I am going to find a good probiotic and give that to her also.

The breeder has not been that helpful but did pay me for the medications she has needed which are at least something. Thank you again for all the wonderful suggestions.

@Genevieve723 my white Sphynx that was used in a breeding program came with upper respiratory issues. After trying a bunch of stuff I just accepted that it was something she contracted at the cattery before she had built up her defenses (probably before she had her kitten vaccines). I wipe her face every day although she doesn't have mucus, just watery eyes and nose. She just turned 7 and has never had anything else wrong so I'm happy. Antibiotics should not be taken lightly because the body builds a resistance to them and they won't work later.

@Condo commando, I think I may be in a similar situation. The systems have subsided a bit since starting her on Vitamin C. She gets L-lysine everyday as mentioned. I am going to start the Avita probiotics that I have seen recommended on here. We have hard wood floors so there is little chance it is carpet related. The other pets in the house are standard poodles and a fur cat that has never had issues. I am, like you, accepting this is her lot in life, but in no way giving up or giving her up. It's amazing how fast they steal our hearts. Thanks again everyone for all of your caring and suggestions.

Thanks, Yoda Mom for checking on us!

Unfortunately, Genevieve still shows signs of URI, but eats, drinks and is active. I haven't taken her to the vet in a few months because she was on so many antibiotics that I don't want her to get resistant to them. After a lot of back and forth with the breeder, who I am not happy with, to say the least, she said a Queen in her cattery has allergies. I am not sure what to make of that but need to research the signs of allergies and I guess go through an elimination diet. The vet said since she was so young when she got the URI that it may be a chronic issue because the damage was done to her nasal cavity.

I am routinely clean up nasal discharge from walls, bedding, etc. but consider it a small labor of love and worth the effort for being able to love such an amazing creature.

Again, thank you for thinking of us.

All paws crossed
Hugs to you for all the best of love and care you fill her world with

Yes often given a drug called Chorpheniramine. It’s an antihistamine and would help with the sneezing.

I brought her home in October and she has had symptoms even on the car ride home from the breeder. The list of antibiotics is exhaustive, there wasn't one we didn't try. Doxycycline was used more than once and is the only thing that put her symptoms at bay, but only temporarily. Clavamox had been used when she first got the URT (she was 10 weeks old) when she was with the breeder. We also tried azthromyacin, but that didn't help either. (I have probably spelled all of these wrong).

What I think she has is chronic sinusitis. In addition to the sneezing, she must have post-nasal drip because she coughs and it sounds like phlegm is being let loose. She never has labored breathing or breaths with her mouth open so I have tried to not worry. Although, honestly, as a mother, I worry about her everyday just as I do my human children when they are sick. It's almost as I have a child with a genetic issue that I manage.

If there is something I am missing please let me know. I really appreciate everyone's comments and support.

@Genevieve723 the vet amd specialist both discussed false positive and false negative results . I am so sorry all those meds did not bring relief -
Poor baby

With my Toby sneezing etc he was prescribed over the counter $3 chlortab
Long shot but I would ask your vet would if chlortab would be indicated to try ?

***Never give anything not instructed or prescribed by your vet bcz it needs to be based on pets history , weight , allergies etc

( I share this emphasis because my dog had a very severe allergic reaction to Benadryl my vet instructed me to give - she told me benedryl can be funky for some pets -)

Sending a lair full of positive vibes and big hugs to you !

@Genevieve723 What you're experiencing sounds pretty much exactly like what my Butchie lives with. As I might have mentioned to you in an earlier thread, he tested positive for Mycoplasma. We tried him on Doxycycline, but to cut a (very) long story short, it didn't work out well at all... He has also been on Clavaseptin but it's only good if he has a flair up and gets worse than his normal day-to-day nasal congestion/discharge.

Nowadays we get by with a nebulizer, which we used to use almost daily, but a while back I saw a Youtube video of a breeder giving her kitten nasal drops (for humans) ! They're just saline drops and I buy a brand that's for infants, and they have really really helped!!! It has a pipette and I give him a couple of drops in each nostril 2-3 times a day. It doesn't cure the symptoms by any stretch, but instead of him being congested and blocked up, it loosens the mucus up and he can sneeze it out! We also have dried snot all over the walls, doors etc....

But as with the adorable Genevieve, this is just something we have learned to live with and we keep a close eye on him, and wipe his nose and rub his chest when he gets some flem in his throat. Like you said, it's impossible not to worry and frustrating you can't do more to help them, but Butchie eats, drinks and is active, just like your girl.

These are the nasal drops I buy in the UK, so you'd probably have another brand, but Butchie absolutely loves them and seems to think it's a treat! :D
