Hi All...

As you know, Luna had kittens, and sadly we lost one after 90 hours of battles.

Chilli now doesnt look good...shes frail, half the size of her siblings and seems to have stopped developing at 2 weeks.
Her spine is still 14 cm (base of the neck to the base of the tail), her weight goes up, but then drops down to 250-257g (which she was at 2 weeks old).

She seems to sleep all day...Luna doesn't call her for feeding (others she pulls them close to her).
They will be 5 weeks old this week. I've started to slowly wean her - she loves it...dives onto the food (belly, paws, face and all). I've tried Glop also - which she was on as a supplement to being nursed (she was doing great...her sister was actually the smallest, and she is now twice the size of Chilli). At 2 weeks old she developed a rash...colloidal silver came out, with hibiscrub and antibiotics. Rash stopped and I started Glop again (3.5 weeks old)...by then, she gained nothing. She still looks like 2 week old kitten. Her rash came back as well (which makes me think its allergy as opposed to fungal or bacterial). She loves it...but everytime she is bottle fed (flow controlled bottle), her breathing goes strange - almost like gurgling/bubbled. I tap her back to try and wind her...and it does work. If I dont, it goes away on its own within 5 minutes. I use an aspirator after each feed just to make sure nothing is in the air passage (had to change the tip to a bottle tip - a little more precise, as the other way it was too wide).

The only thing I can think of doing is isolating her completely - she knows how to eat wet food, she enjoys it...I cant leave her food out with Luna there - Luna and food does not last in the same room for more than 10 seconds. She will eat her food, my food, neighbiurs food (if she could) and still cry for more...she's currently on 350-400g daily. Plus dry...which she finishes!

What are all your opinions? Have you faced this before and didnt have to suffer a loss? Chilli is a keeper for us...I've bonded with Pepper, and sadly lost her due to vets making a careless mistake with a critical kitten, and I am not prepared to lose another one. I am fighting as much as i can for Chilli. I am not accepting defeat. I know fading kitten syndrome can happen at any stage between 0 and 9 weeks old. My mentor is also out of suggestions and ideas.

Since I've taken her off antibiotics, she started walking around a lot more. She isnt so much into play fighting as much as the others, but she is more curious. She comes, greets me, lays next to me...lets me tickle her belly...

Now and then we would have a "special neees" kitten and we would keep them. They would always be small and we would love them but they would pass on. I can think of it happening twice while I was working with the breeding program I was involved with.
Don't be surprised if you wake up on day and she has passed on. If she is meant to make it she will thrive but you have to be realistic about the future.

Thank you @Yoda mom

@NinaGato I just got a lump in my throat...I know there is no way to sugar coat the reality, and I know it happens...I just dont want to accept this as her fate. Yes she was small...second smallest actually. But till she reached 14/15 days old, she outgrew one of her sisters. She was the first to open her eyes, first to take first proper steps, first to walk...First to be vocal, and oh boy did she have a lot to say about anything and everything. Then because of the rash, I had to put her back on them (originally she was on antibiotics for her breathing - that was at 4 days old, for around 5 days). Since the second take on antibiotics, she stopped progressing. She actually just stopped fully - no vacalisation, depressed, lethargic, would just lay there awake and look at you. Up to that point, she was doing great! She is still trying - she shows great appetite, since i've stopped antibiotics she has been a lot more mobile, even did few little cries too when she saw me. I just cannot accept this as her fate....we're both trying.

The only thing i hadnt tried is mixing wet mushy food with Glop...I dont know if I can replace dairy plain yogurt for goats milk plain yogurt.

We have an appointment tomorrow at a specialised Cat Clinic. I spoke to the senior vet today, and he said to bring her in tomorrow morning first thing.

Hi All,

Firstly...thank you for all your responses, well wishes, prayers and healing vibes.

I just wanted to update...I've been searching every cat forum (and this one included) and so many times I came across the same end result - rainbow bridge...and always with the same pattern - no one saw the vet. They accepted it as a fading kitten syndrome.
I've been told the same thing - it can be fading kitten syndrome.
Now by nature, I am a very patient but determined person, who refused to give up or accept things like "syndrome". I understand human biology and chemistry, hence I dont accept "syndrome" - because every ache has a reason and a cause, and if it has a cause, it has a treatment or supportive care. Point I am making is this...if anyone in the future comes across this with the same symptoms, please insist on blood tests. You could potentially have an answer.
Yes, sometimes admittedly, kittens or puppies will just stop...shut down, but majority of the time, it is because of an abnormality with something - misdiagnosis, lack of medical intervention, lack of symptoms. We all know that cats are never by the book (like dogs), and sometimes we are face with an issue where the vet had studied it, but had never seen it before (Like Luna and Bartonella)...So time needs to be invested into running tests.

So...now for our vet visit.
Chilli, because of her low weight only has 14ml of blood, and the lab needed minimum 6ml to run 3 difference panels. Based on her outlook, her symptoms (slowed down growth, leathery skin, weight, low body temperature), her food intake (which is enough for her to be gaining 50g per week minimum, not 10g in 10 days) - it all suggests Congenital Hyperthyroidism (extremely rare in cats, and even more so in Sphynxes). Only one thing that didnt match the list of symptoms - she has a normal heart rate (usually its low with the condition)
The vet had only ever seen this once before - and he isnt in his 20s! He consulted with other consultants on this also, who have never seen it before but have obviously covered it in studies. He explained to use what it is, what needs to be done, and if it the condition that its not curable but manageable. He was patient with me...and with Chilli also.
Vet took 1.25ml and split it between 3 tubes - PCR, full count, and thyroid levels. Results to come on friday. He explained again that best case scenario is, it comes back and she has Congenital Hyperthyroidism...worst case, it comes back and they are all fine.

As I was leaving, he stopped me to show me one of the samples, which he already mixed with "serum" - he said it should be clear, with blood on the base of the tube. It wasnt. It has milky/cloudy thick layer on top - so, blood at the bottom, a little bit of clear serum, and milky plasma on top - he explained this relates to metabolism. Normal rate metabolism doesnt have the milky/cloudy layer.
Which explains why she eats a lot (it was until Sunday, 40-60ml per day of Glop, plus nursing) and only gained 10g in 10 days. She burns it...but she isnt active as the others.

So, now we wait and see. For now, as he said, isolating her to keep her warm was the best thing i did. With her mum, she finds the coldest spot and sleeps on it all day. Surprisingly as her basal temperature is lower. This way, she has an electric blanket from one corner to the next, whole box of it...nowhere to hide from it. No litter tray - as she will go and lay in it for coldness...just a puppy training pad. And I give her food. Oh and my old phone on the other end of the box (behind her toy that she lays on) playing the sound of purring cat on repeat - it soothes her.

On Friday we collected the results. We had an option of doing a trial, but she is too tiny to go through with with something that even adult cats don’t survive. Trial involves bringing the sodium levels slowly, at hourly blood tests to monitor it.
I spent the whole evening and night in tears with her on my chest. She declined very rapidly after the appointment. She became too weak to hold up her head it to even try and move. She stopped taking syringe early hours of the morning on Saturday. I was left with no choice.
I had to call in a vet to perform euthanasia - her pupils were barely responding. He looked at her results and just said that it’s simply amazing that she lasted this long. He confirmed brain damage due to sodium levels had already started to take place. But he said the same thing, he hadn’t seen results like that in a long time, because the main one that would need to be brought down as an emergency is sodium, but adult cats don’t come out alive through that trial. We sat in the garden, it was warm and sunny as she wouldn’t get to experience that...she was in her blanket at first, but fidgeted out of it...I let helped her. As we sat there she started to move a little, I tried to support her and helped her up and held her head. She started to walk slowly towards my palm...stopped, laid down and pressed herself against it. I cried. We sat like that for few minutes and then I placed her on my chest. I apologised, told her I will always and forever love her, told her it wasn’t supposed to be like that, I told her I was sorry I didn’t get her the help she needed soon enough and that I whilst I had to, I didn’t want her to go. I told her I will never let go of her even when she is on the other side...I told her she was my baby. And she was...I’ve not been this broken ever before. The vet came, spoke to me. Discussed it all...I was holding her little paw and kissing her until she stopped. And then my heart fell apart.
I am broken beyond words right now.
