Hi everyone!

My name is Chelsea, and this is my beautiful girl Umami. After what felt like an eternity, we were finally able to pick her up today after a 3 months of waiting. She's brave and adventurous, but also loves a cuddle!

I have had cats my whole life, but I am a first-time Sphynx mum. I am very much looking forward to being a part of this community and having like-minded people to talk to, as well as having support. There is still so much I have to learn about Sphynx cats, and we really want to do our best for Umami.

Nice to meet you all!

CONGRATULATIONS! Umami is beautiful. I do have a quick question out of curiosity, how did you choose her name? I have only heard that word used in association with wine tasting, so I am giggling a little bit.

Again, congrats!

Ooooh-mami!!!

Cute baby and cute name. I had a thing where all my aquarium creatures were named after Japanese foods, lol. I love!

Hi! Yes, a bit of a quirky name :-D
The breeder names all her litters using a letter from the alphabet - our litter happened to be U!
My husband and I thought we would just name her a U name while she was with the breeder and then rename her when we got her home. But we thought of Umami and it absolutely stuck ❤

I love that! An aquarium filled with some great names! :-D
My hubby is a chef, so he came up with the name Umami pretty quickly. It suits her so well! ❤

@ChelseaKaupp , checking in for updates ? Look forward to pics and tales
Hey! We've had such a busy past few weeks. Lots going on :) Umami has grown almost 500g, and is the hungriest cat in the world Her faint black spots on her skin get darker every day too. So cute! And everyday she realises she can jump on things just a little bit higher!

She's getting the hang of pooping and covering it up without stepping in it luckily and we've only had a few poop incidences where I've woken up to a smelly little girl sitting on me!

Unfortunately we're still trying to sort out her health :( She's still got a problem with her left eye, and she constantly sneezes. This morning her eye was extremely swollen - poor girl had an eyelid 4 times its normal size. Vet seems to think she has both herpes and chlamydia (not confirmed as the tests are too expensive and sometimes inconclusive anyway). So Umami is on a pretty intensive course of antibiotics at the moment. She will be feeling pretty bad for the next week or so the vet said, so we'll give her lots of cuddles. If this doesn't work, then the vet will try another antibiotic which is meant specifically for chlamydia, but is a last resort for Umami as she is so small and the antibiotic can apparently cause burns in her throat just from ingesting it. A little scary!
It does explain why after such great contact with the breeder, she cut all ties contacting us once I mentioned herpes, and now chlamydia. If Umami has it, so do most of the cats she owns and I'm sure that being public knowledge isn't in her best interests. Her attitude upset me, but I'm grateful we have Umami with us instead of her as I will do everything in my power to make sure she has a good life.
So we'll see how it all goes and will keep you all updated!

Here's some pics! ❤

Thank you! We'll let you know how the eye issue pans out. While the vet was confident it was either herpes, chlamydia or both, she did want an eye specialist to check it over when the swelling is gone. She said there was a small possibility that she could have eyelashes growing inside her eyelid, or the inner eyelid may not be rolling over her eye properly - but that she had no abrasions on the eye on her previous 2 vet visits so that explanation is doubtful.

She's curled in a little ball next to me, purring away. Will give her an extra cuddle from you! ❤

So sorry to hear about the ongoing issues. Sending you healing vibes as well. It's unfortunate that the breeder has cut ties. Sometimes it's hard to tell what kind of a breeder you have adopted from. She sounds like she is in great care. Please keep us updated.

By the way, she is so adorable.

Thank you!
I thought I had done my research, and I visited her cattery and went along to a cat show she was participating in and met other breeders. Alas...! I'm sure it's something you hear frequently from new sphynx owners in this forum.

She is the light of our life I constantly overload family and friends with photos of her. Im sure they're sick of them but I can't get enough of her! Every little thing she does ❤

Regardless of how she came into your life, it is the presence that is the most important. Your love is very evident. And that's great. Please feel free to keep overloading us with pictures and stories. We love them here.

I will do ❤

The truth is, I will always need Umami more than she ever needs me. She came into my life at a particularly low point - moving halfway around the world to my husband's country, where I had no friends, no family, can't speak the language and massively struggled to find work, hasn't been easy. But I know for a fact I could never be that low again with her in my life! She's too precious :) So the least I can do for her is make sure she has the best life possible, seeing as she is doing so much for me ❤

Sphynx are the best buddies when you feel lonely. Glad you have Umami by her side.
And a good thing the vet let a specialist check if there isn't another issue like an ingrowing eyelash. I remember my dog had this and it took the vet a lot of time and meds to figure out it was an eyelash

Sorry to hear about all this. The most important thing is that you love her now and take care of her now. Can't wait to see more of you here and we're sending hugs to you both! (It's not uncommon to cross paths with bad breeders, I've done it. There's always going to be people who just want to make quick money, but thank god Umami's got you now!)

Awh((hugs)) and head smooches to Umami

I dealt with an eye issue with numerous visits to vet
Best thing I did was take him to the eye specialist -
She examined him , changed his medication amd within about 8 weeks all healed !
I wish I would have taken first to the eye specialist .

The whole bill was $300 US.
She did not push further testing -
Did the eye exam , gave new meds amd eye drops

The specialist prescribed Idoxurine eye drops that worked wonders ! an eye idrop lubricant
Definite ask your vet about idoxurine
I was told he may need surgery but the specialist got him relief amd his eye is healed
my regular vet give him Oflaxacin eye drops .

Please keep us updated often !
