Urgh...Nelson's eye...still.

Nelson went BACK to the vet today to have his eye checked...remember, he had an ulcer last time, most likely a result of conjunctivitis from FHV. He'd been on antibiotic eye drops (tobramycin) and atropine drops. No infection today but the ulcer is still there - in fact, it's getting worse. For whatever reason, his eye is not healing itself.

So, we drew blood and the vet made a serum out of his blood and baytril that I have to give him every 2 hours (in addition to the other 2 eye drops he's already getting). Thank god he's a good patient and lets me do anything to him or this would be a nightmare!

Fingers crossed that Nelson's own blood serum will do the trick, because the next stop is to visit the ophthalmologist for corneal scrapings and who knows what other painful and expensive treatments...

Ah poor guy. Poor you too- every 2 hours- I know you've said you have had to do similar meds like that before but- bless you!

Oh poor Nelson! He sure sounds like A trooper when it comes to his meds so thats A good thing. I sure hope he gets better without having to see the ophthalmologist I had to take one of our dogs to one years ago and it was so much:Easy-money:

Ulcers are certainly scary! I'm so sorry Nelson has to experience this. Stella and I will pray that his eye will quickly improve. Get well soon, Nelson!

I hope he won't need the scrapings, but am glad your regular vet will send you to a specialist for that. Some general practice vets will do corneal scraping, but I'd rather go to someone who does it frequently even if it's more costly. I had one foster kitten with bilateral ulcers and it's one of the most stressful things I've had to deal with in terms of meds and worry. It's so hard to see them suffer

I know it's early still, but is he tolerating the baytril well?

Grrr. I hate how much herpes takes a toll on kitties... i wonder if there will ever be a vaccine or curative med *fingers crossed*

It's so hard to tell if the serum is working or not!! I think it is. I think his eye looks better, but he's still squinting. I haven't been able to find any information about this treatment to know how quickly it's supposed to work, or what results I should be seeing, so I'm totally stressing out! Plus, I'm up every two hours putting drops in his eye. I'm amazed he still lets near him. I calculated, since Friday I've put 3 kinds of drops in his eye over 70 times!!

This must be what parenting is like...reason number 183 I don't want kids.

I will say that a couple of times I pried his eye open and it looked so good I had to double check to make sure I was putting drops in the correct eye, but then other times there was no doubt which eye was in question...it's a freakin' roller coaster ride!

I have to leave him while I go to work tomorrow and I dread that part the most. He's been pouting a lot today, and he threw up. He's still eating and not running a fever, but I'm a worried mama.

I can relate to the squinty thing since I've been putting drops in Sophie's eyes its so hard to tell since they still squint! And in your case a dose every 2 hrs!

No, he's not done with the drops - as soon as I get home from work I'll be back on the every two hours schedule with him, and he has his recheck first thing in the morning.

I hope he's enjoying his time off today while I'm at work! I'll have more news tomorrow...oh man, I hope it's good news.

Sophie makes a mad dash when she sees her ear drop bottle now. I feel so bad but her escape attempts are cute- that girl is fast!

Nelson just had a recheck on his eye. He has an indolent ulcer (also called a "boxer ulcer" because they're common to that breed of dog). Basically, a typical ulcer should heal within a week, but for whatever reason, his ulcer was not healing and was getting worse...

But, it looks like the serum is starting to work now. It's still too early to tell so I've got to use it for another week and if it doesn't look better next week...off to the ophthalmologist for a procedure where they brandish the eye with a tool sort of like a dremel...

Some good news, I only have give him 7 eye drops a day now instead of 16!

Alright Nelson, you have a week to get better so you don't get the dremel! Fingers crossed that he gets better with the drops. 7 times a day is a lot but will probably feel like nothing to you now!

Please send prayers, vibes, etc... Nelson is going to the ophthalmologist for eye surgery right now. He had his recheck with the vet who immediately called the specialist and asked him to work him in for surgery.

I think I might throw up.
