Hello everyone!
I wanted to share my story in hopes that someone out there has answers.
My husband and I adopted a 12 week old sphynx from a Dallas breeder in February. We had three wonderful months with him, and suddenly, in may, he became lethargic and started vomiting and having diarrea. I rushed him to a local vet on a sunday night and he was given a shot to stop the vomiting and that was about it. The vet suspected he could have eaten something that was blocking his belly so the next morning I took him to the Texas A&M animal hospital and after blood work/x-rays and ultrasound, the only thing they found was a slightly enlarged intestine. So I was sent home with some vomiting medicine. Later on that same day, back in the house, i heard him making the most horrible pain sounds while he was using the litter box. I immediately scooped out the poop and found it bloody and runny. I put him back in the crate and took him back to the hospital. I hadnt heard those sounds until then, and i definitely hadnt seen blood in his stool before. After like three hours, i was told he had IBD and he was put on a bland can diet from proplan and given some powder probiotics, pain medicine, vomit medicine and a dewormer.
He was doing okay for about 4 days and then he quit eating. This is the first time in our lives that we are cat owners by the way, so i didnt know what to do and i let it go for a week and a half before i rushed him back to the ER. By then, he had lost so much weight and it was a pitiful sight. Around that same time, i contacted the breeder and she suggested the raw diet. I got the recipe for it which included (chicken thighs, livers and pumpkin and a supplement called Kitty bloom) I ordered a meat grinder that cost me about $700 and everything i needed to start making my own raw food, I also went ahead and ordered some rad cat food to make sure i had something to feed him just in case. I ordered all the flavors in the Rad cat to see which ones he liked. (chicken, beef, lamb, venison and turkey)
He stayed hospitalized for a whole weekend, and was sent to the gastrointestinal especialist since the ER had done everything there was to do there. i was told the next step was to do an endoscopy, but the gastro especialist said he didnt want to do such an invasive procedure to such a small kitten, because he didnt think there was going to be a definitive answer anyway. This gastro especialist put him on a kitten wet food salmon diet from science diet. By the way, the food i had been giving him since i got him was the science diet for kitten healthy development dry.
When i got him back, i was given more pain/nausea/deworming medicine. And he did really good for a few weeks, and at the same time i was slowly transitioning him into the raw diet. He loved all the rad cat, and he loved the batch i prepared, i even texted the breeder to brag about the miracle that raw food is. Within a couple weeks he was back to having vomit and diarrea and this time i took him to our vet because the bill from A&M had been around $2500 and we couldnt afford to keep paying that kind of money and the kitty wasnt even getting better.
My vet kept him hospitalized, he knew everything that had been going on but he was not okay with feeding raw. So the kitty was put on a prescription diet by hills (digestive care) and this food is the one my kitty has been able to stay on the longest without recurring episodes of vomiting and diarrea. I was also given a plug in called Feliway and was told my kitten might be stressed. Later i noticed that even though he wasnt vomiting, his stool wasnt very firm so i called the vet and i was given some probiotics that i add to his food. He has gone back twice in two weeks recentlly, because he quits eating and starts vomiting. I have no idea what triggers it. The vet keeps telling me the kitty is stressed. We do have two other cats at home but both of them are extremely gentle and have been there since the beginning. We also have a chihuahua that loves all the kitties and she thinks theyre her babies. I cant imagine whats supposedly causing the stress. We do not have any human children, these are our children and i feel like i am not a good mother if i cant figure out whats wrong with my child.
As of two days ago, he isnt eating and started vomiting and has diarrea. I sent the vet a video of how the kitty retches and vomits and how the stool is so watery and kind of bloody. I was told to bring him so they can "put him back on track" which is what theyve been doing the past three times ive taken him. I asked how they feed, how much, etc. Ive been following the same protocol and i am so aggravated, i really dont know how to help him. Is it really that he is not compatible with my household? i love him so much, I refuse to believe he is sick because of me. My husband is afraid that if we give him up (u know, because the vet says our house stresses him) that if it turns out his condition is medical, the new owners are not going to want to spend the money to make him better.
I joined this community a while back and have been reading everything you guys post. At some point, i got overwhelmed with so much info, I have the feeling raw food is going to be my best bet.Im not sure. But I have so many questions. Do i want my own homemade raw food or do i want to buy rad cat? and if yes what flavor? if the food he eats now is chicken, then maybe i should stay away from it? how can i figure out whats making him sick if switching him from one food to another is not recommended? or is there another brand of food that yall can reccomend? What am i doing wrong? if hes not eating can i feed him like boiled chicken or something? Is there medication i can buy online to help him?

I just placed an order for more rad cat food. But i am willing to try ANYTHING you guys suggest.

Thank you to all the people that reads this long post. I think yall are great for having a community for sphynx owners.
My kittys name is Dragon by the way, any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you again.

I am so sorry your baby is not feeling well and totally understand why you are stressing @Xandria (I just tagged her) is a great person to partner up with for the raw diet questions. I also suggest possibly going to another vet for a second opinion as this seems quite severe. Do not feel you are doing anything wrong. Finding the right diet can take time. I think your gut is right that your vet saying they just need to get him back on track might not be the best for long term results.

Welcome to sphynxlair, good to have you.
I just wonder if allergies could be his problem.
These symptoms, can be allergy related also.
My Izmae would throw up anywhere from 2 to 8 times a day.
She never had diarrhoea, but she licked herself, on her belly
until, it was chapped. She was sick and miserable.
The Vet has to draw blood. Check for food and inhalents allergies.
I would do this for sure asap. You have to know if this is the issue.
If so, until you find out what the allergies are, your baby, will not
get better. Here is a link about Izmae's allergy Journey.
She is doing excellent.

I had no idea this could be done. I will definitely ask them to do it tomorrow since he's being hospitalized again. Thank you!

I have had a sphynx with severe IBD. She also was extremely food sensitive.
The two foods she did the best on was Rx diet called low residue and another low residue diet that was rabbit and pea. I always had oral medication on had when I felt ahe she was going to go into a bought of the poops.
The big thing was not to do any sudden changes in diet. We didn't do any treats except freeze dried. No table food and I kept the dog food away from her as she would get into that and get the poops.
Dragon sounds very sensitive and sometimes going to the vet was the only thing that for my Danser back on track too. I cant tell you how many times we wound up at tue ER vet getting fluids and meds over the 14.5 years i had her.
The big thing is to get on a routine and keep it. Best wishes to uou and Dragon

Oh my goodness. Your words just lifted my spirits. Just like you, my husband and I are willing to do anything to help him. He is so cute and funny when he's not sick. We love him so much. My husband says the house feels so empty every time we hospitalize him. I guess it is okay to ask the vet for medicine then? I am never given medicine for more than 4 dosages. What kind of medicine did u keep with u?

@DanielayDragon I'm so sorry to be reading how sick your baby is. It rips your heart out to see them suffering and then lose weight.

I have a few sensitive tummies here, but one more so than the others. I've had blood in the litter box more times than I have hair on my head! I've cleaned up more vomit than I care to talk about.

I finally had changed their diet to a grain-free diet I'm using Science Diet grain free (it comes in chicken and also salmon). I would try grain free and maybe try to stay away from chicken as it might be the culprit. Try not offering different flavors so you can see what is best for his stomach.

Probiotics are good to add. When there is so much vomiting and loose stools, you can offer unflavored Pedialyte (store brand like CVS) or get fluids under the skin from your vet. Too many lost electrolytes can be serious if he's vomiting a lot.

From everything you told us, I agree with you that it's not stress in your home if everything is calm with all the other pets. The Feliway Diffuser isn't bad idea and can help if you purchased the right one and you have enough plugged in without them being hidden behind furniture.

It sounds like it's mostly or all from diet. I used to panic when I saw blood...I even saw blood in vomit. My vet kept on assuring me it was from the diet. I thought it was much more serious than that, but he was right because there was a world of difference once I switched to grain free. I also add a spoonful of pumpkin with breakfast and dinner (both canned food meals).

Please let us know how your baby is doing and I pray you see a positive difference soon.

I have read so many good things about pumpkin. I Will definitely try it as soon as I get him back from the vet. And thank you for the reassurance. I panick every time I see blood or vomit. The time he lost all the weight I ended up with a neck spasm of how bad I was stressing.
What grain free food do u recommend? Thank you!

@DanielayDragon I don't know what your kitten's exact problem is. All I can do is tell you my experience with blood in the litter box and vomiting. There are a number of members here that have a sphynx with an allergy to chicken. I don't know if your kitten has any allergies. A blood test would confirm that.

My vet had recommended Science Diet Grain-Free canned and dry food. When I purchased it, I got the chicken flavor and it worked like a charm. It also comes in salmon flavor.

Many members here have had skin problems with their sphynx cats and found out it was food allergies many times. I know a lot of members have had success with Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet (Natural Balance LID). It's grain-free and comes in more of a variety of flavors....even venison meat.

I tried that food not too long ago and my oldest boy vomited a lot. So I went back to the Science Diet Grain-Free chicken and all is well again. I won't be changing foods again!

Again, I don't know exactly what the problem is with your kitten, but until it's figured out, you need to keep an eye on him and make sure he's eating something and very importantly...that he's hydrated.

If you are going to try the pumpkin, make sure it's 100% Pure Pumpkin in the can and not the pie filling which contains spices. The two cans look almost identical.

Keep in touch and let us know how your baby is doing. You are a wonderful, caring sphynx mommy.

It really depends on what they are treating the kit with. We found two mess that really helped out but I also was a bit pushy to get meds to take home at first. Now that I have been going to the same vet for 16 years she has gotten to know me and how I am with my animals. I think with a case like Dragon you have to come to know and trust your vet very well.

thank you for your reply. I definitely will try the pumpkin. Thank you for the tip, and my husband just drove to petsmart to see what options there are for frozen food. He found some instinct rabbit food. I agree with u, chicken is giving me a bad vibe. But I know I have to transition slowly. My husband also found some homeopathic medicine for vomit. And other stress sprays and stuff, he went ahead and brought everything home lol, at least if it's needed it's handy.
I'll definitely keep you guys updated. He is staying hospitalized until Friday. I will definitely request the allergy test and we will go from there.
This community has helped me so much already. I'm feeling full of hope again and willing to keep trying until my son is back to normal. I mean... He is cute as hell! We love him so much!

@DanielayDragon you are welcome. I certainly know how attached we get to them immediately. They are so human-like, it really feels like we've got four-legged "human" babies. :)

And, yes, he's certainly a cutie pie. :)

Praying he feels all better very soon and back in your arms.

Hello hello! Dragon is a beauty, and I was almost in tears reading your story. I commend you and am so glad that you are so devoted to the care of your animal companions.

Echoing lots of other posts above:

Allergy testing will be quite important. In the meantime I would cease feeding chicken (the most common food allergy) and possibly even duck (another food allergy).

If Rad is working, stick with that. The food looks great. I make my own because I have access to some great quality and inexpensive meats here (I use Better in the Raw mix in). Honestly, I'd stick with one type of raw food for a while (unless it proves to be a problem), and even just one protein. Venison and turkey are yum! Watch portion sizes, as well (perhaps 80 - 120 g per meal, 3 or 4 times a day). It's also not a bad idea to add extra water (even a few tablespoons) to each meal to get extra water in Dragon's system. I use hot filtered water so that it warms the food too.

I'd also consider adding a sprinkling of FortiFlora (FortiFlora® Feline Probiotic Supplement) to each meal. These are great probiotics.

And finally, for firming up the stool, some pure pumpkin is a good choice.

Please keep us updated. Sending healing vibes your way and kiss on the head for Dragon.

First off, sending you all positive vibes and hugs. I am sorry that Dragon is going through all this, I know it can be scary and you just want them to be okay!

Our Loki has an extremely sensitive stomach. He started vomiting like crazy at about a year old, and when we brought him to the vet they did X-ray to check for blockage and did an ultrasound as well. They found that his bowels were inflammed, but not enough to diagnose with IBD. We've been through so many diets, kibble, wet, commercial raw, homemade raw, etc. And chicken, beef, turkey, etc. It's been a long journey, and it's hard to see him vomit or have diarrhea. And sometimes he would be good with a food for 2-3 months and then all of a sudden vomit again.

The best luck we have had is most recently switching to the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet. We are doing Duck and Pea, wet food and kibble. (We tried Salmon to begin with but had puking on Day 3). They have been eating this for about 4-5 months now, and Loki has been great!! We have Fort-Flora to add to his food in case of runny poo, but for the most part he has been good. And we haven't had any puking.

A couple other suggestions I'll say, that we have done and our vet told us to try. With IBD they say it's very important to get into a routine, So they eat at the same time each day. It can also help to feed them a few meals in a day, we do three.

We feed wet in the am, same time each day. Have an auto feeder of kibble at the same time each afternoon, and then wet again in the evening before we go to bed.

Sometimes we noticed that just like 30-60'minutes before a mealtime, Loki would puke. So our vet suggested we increase the amount of food he is eating. So we did increase that a little bit. And it's also why we feed 3 times a day, so he isn't ever too hungry.

But weirdly enough, over feeding also would cause him diarrhea and vomit. So it's a happy middle you need to find.

Pumpkin is great, as people have suggested! And also a good idea to have multiple water dishes or bowls out to encourage drinking.

I'm sending many hugs your way and I hope you can figure out a good routine for Dragon. It sounds like he is in great hands with you and you are doing everything you can to make him better.

Please keep us updated and you'll be in our thoughts!

Thank You for your reply. I am so glad I ordered rad cat venison and lamb this morning. I didn't want to order chicken or beef or turkey for being so similar to chicken. And so the other 2 options were lamb and venison.

First update.

My husband and I went to the vet this morning. Dragon doesn't seem lethargic, he threw up this morning though. I requested the allergy test and was told I had to take him back to A&M because it's a complicated test. The vet tech said she would call them and ask and if it's a blood sample they need, my vet can go ahead and send it to them. I was also told when dragon comes home, they're going to give me vomit medicine to keep at the house.
That is it for today, we are not going to pick him up until next week. But I am going to be getting updates so I will keep you all posted. Thank you again!

@DanielayDragon thank you for the update. I feel so bad for Dragon. He's not feeling well and he's not in his own home. :( Are you able to go there and visit and hold him?

I hope all this gets figured out very soon. Wishing you the best.

@DanielayDragon I'm sorry you and your little guy are going through all this. You are getting a lot of advice and I don't want to throw a bunch of stuff at you. I'll share a couple of main thoughts as a long time cat owner:

First, if you suspect IBD try to see an internal medicine specialist, not a regular vet or the ER vet.

Second, vets don't like raw diets so don't let that alone stop you.

Well here is one thing you might consider...the best diet to start with might be the "introductory diet" ...it's not raw so the vet will be happy ...here is a link:

Bless his heart. Your doing everything you can.
I hope the allergy testing will help a lot.
I hope he's allergic to nothing. But, I for sure would want to
know. My Vet took the blood and sent it off, to a Lab.
So I don't know why your's can't.
I know you miss him and he does you. Hope everything get's
resolved.

Wow, thank you so much! This info was so enlightening. I will definitely stop at heb to get some organic chicken to make broth. I was just showing my husband all of the responses from you guys and he is so thrilled! I am grateful and amazed at the quick responses and the concern. I thought I'd share another picture of my beautiful baby.
Thank you all again!

@DanielayDragon , ((( hugs))) amd positive vibes sent for you , yours and Soo handsome Dragon.
Great advice giver me as I have been following along with positive thoughts and prayers -
I have an IBS kitty - we firmly found a food she holds down and did a food trial on -
She has been on it for a year and night and day difference . She is a more "sensitive " kitty we adopted -
a,d we dialysis found what worked for her.
No treats amd she had been on small portions several times a day feeding of Fromm game bird recipe .
Game Bird Cat Food - Fromm Family Foods

I did not do the raw food route but the would have been our next food trial option .

We are all here for each other and sending you a lair full of prayers and positive vibes for Dragon

Hope he is happy me soon!

Keep us updated often (((hugs))

@DanielayDragon we are a community of loving people. Well, we all have this breed and love them sooooo much and our babies give us so much love back.

Once upon a time, we were all newbies and may have needed help or direction with concerns we were having at the time. Now, we give back. I know that I truly get concerned when I hear of someone's baby not feeling well. I've been down that road quite a number of times with different things and I know how it made me feel, thus, I know how it makes someone else feel.

These babies can go downhill rather quickly and there are many times when we have to act quickly to help them feel better. It's heartbreaking to see them not eating, losing weight, sleeping in a ball, etc., etc. They depend on us to help them. :) We are their parents.
