Ten Commandments for Pet Owners

Someone gave this to me, so I thought I would share it.

Ten Commandments for Pet Owners

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 yrs. Any separation from you will be very painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do not break my spirit with your temper, though I will always forgive you. Your patience will teach me more effectively.

3. Please have me spayed or neutered

4. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. After all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you.

5.Speak to me often. Even though I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me. Your voice is the sweetest sound I ever hear, as you must know by my enthusiasm whenever I hear your footsteps.

6.Take me in when it's cold and wet. I'm a domestic animal and am no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for little more than your gentle hands petting me. Keep my bowl filled with water. Feed me good food so that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding. By your side, I stand ready, willing and able to share my life with you, for that is what I live for. I'll never forget how well you've treated me.

7. Don't hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old. For you will grow old, too.

10. When I am old, or when I can no longer enjoy good health, please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun. Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently. And be with me on that difficult journey when it's time to say goodbye. Never say "I just can't bear to watch" Everything is easier for me when you are there. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always safest in your hands. I love you.

what a beatiful post. by time i got to #10, i was almost in tears.
#10 is something i WILL NEVER budge on. I will ALWAYS be with my animals as they past. it's hard on me... yes... but could you imagine dying alone... how scared and helpless they must feel... abandonded.... i will never do that to my BABIES.
Thanks for reminding us of all these important aspects of pet ownership

No truer words have ever been written...thanks for sharing. I wish more people would realize that pet ownership is a lifetime relationship with another sentinent being, and that pets are not merely property to be discarded when the novelty wears off.

it was so hard today to hold little Chico while the vet gave him the shot that would ease his pain and let him slip quickly away. Chico's eyes were on mine the whole time... bless the vet who was kindness itself and the dear assistance who hugged me while the moment of this tiny brave dog's life slid away. I swear I saw thankfullness expessed in that Chihuahua's eyes as he silently sighed and let this world go under my hand.

I too will never budge on #10. My babies have given me all that they have to give. The least I can do is give them the comfort of holding them as they leave this world. I owe them that much and so very much more.

The next time Pedda is crawling on me when I'm trying to do something and I start to say her name with an impatient tone in my voice and reach to put her down... I'm going to pause a moment and think of this thread. Then I'm going to give her a hug and kiss as I realize that what I was doing wasn't so important after all.

Thank you for posting this.

I love you too Chongo. I appreciate that you have been the most loving and caring animal. Always soothing a crying baby or cleaning a fellow feline because you know it feels good, staying with a family member when they are sick, watching the butterfly and not swatting it. You have brought many smiles to our family. Always will you be in our hearts. We have had many years together and many adventures. You are unique and one of a kind. No one can match your sweet soul. See our smiles when I take you to the vet tomorrow and know that we will see you soon. It is hard to let you go my sweet. Suffer no longer. Relax and sleep. Then awake to peace, love and kindness in the arms or you divine master.
