There has been recalls on alot of things that we all have in our homes from pet food, to our medicine cabinets, to our kitchens. Does that mean that we just never use these products again? How many people drive A car in the recent recall?

I do. And I most especially stop using it if it happens repeatedly over the years. (IMO, that's not learning from a mistake one has made). You'll also notice that there are no products in my house that contain xylitol and no cleaning products that are harmful to cats or dogs (preventive measures go a long way in my life). I don't leave my yarn or string out where the pets could come in contact with it (preventing linear foreign bodies), Jason doesn't buy me flowers that are toxic to pets (my favorite flower, Calla Lilies, are never purchased), etc. In a bout of irony...no, I don't eat hamburger and can't remember the last time I ate peanut butter.

I understand your logic on the multiple recalls in other areas...but I don't suppose those of us that have lost family members in a recall involving a problem with a car or someone that lost a family member to food poisoning would turn around a buy the same car or not have some withholdings from eating commonly tainted food. I thrive on improving my pets' care through the mistakes or problems others have had. That doesn't mean everyone does it, but I can try to instill this idea in others. I'd like to think that this will save pet's lives.

I do get your point also, and I guess the key point is that my home does well and has not been effected and if it was I am sure I would see things another way. Thats why we now have A fake christmas tree and steer clear of the same flowers as well. No wish bones are ever kept for making A wish any longer, and I don't put that blue crap in the toilet anymore. I have changed lots of things around the house for my pets and will continue to if something makes them unhappy.

I highlighted the fillers for you. Of these foods, Nutro seems to be one of the better choices.

I use Evo, and he WILL STARVE HIMSELF FOR DAYS if he doesn't have it. I heard it was good and natural, I am wondering why I haven't seen anyone else use it?

Evo is a good food. Some others here have found it to cause loose stool and gone for something more gentle on the stomach. If it works with you, stick with it. It truly is a wonderful food.

I've been using EVO cause my kitty was thought to have food allergies. I think she has sun allergies instead and will stop using the EVO cause they just don't seem to like it.

Evo isn't a good food for food allergies because it contains chicken (one of the top proteins for allergies in food). In addition, it contains fish which is another.

You might try something like duck or rabbit if it continues to be suspected that she has food allergies.

Good luck!

I use Iams kitten food (suggested by breeder) for the dry stuff, but for the wet...she doesn't like the Pate kinds it has to be sliced or flaked...so I usually end up with the Fancy Feast Sliced Beef or Science Diet Sliced Beef

I feed the boys only wet .... Taste of the Wild and Tikki. The owner of Wet Noses in Oakbrook where I buy their food told me that his cat loves the dehydrated beef/liver patties that Stella and Chewy's make, I bought a small bag and gave a pattie to each of them........both went wild!

Been trying to get them on raw but it's going to take some time. They just don't like it at all. They just turned 2 the other day. Glad they are willing to use what ever litter I put down though! One pan has Purr and Simple (great stuff) while the other has World's best.

Hey everyone I just want you guys to know I sell pet food for a living :) so if anyone has any questions about their food or anything related just give me a HOLLLLAAAAA! I didn't have time to go through all these messages (because I am at work haha) but I will later.

Right now Peaches is on Nutro because that's what her previous owner had her on. I am thinking of slowly introducing Evo or Taste of the Wild, because they are grain free and have excellent protein and fat sources.

I'd skip Royal Canin, Treespirit. Taste of the Wild is a much, much higher quality food without grains or fillers. Royal canin cannot boast that.

I agree with PRMommy, Taste of the Wild is an awesome food! It's just harder to find than RC. My cats got sick on RC, so I quit feeding it to them immediately.

I work in an AAHA Acredited clinic as an RVT. I see an incredible amount of animals come in being fed very low-quality foods and suffering because of it. Owners shelling out hundreds of dollars to buy the "prescription diets" and their dog still has a crappy haircoat, oily, flaky skin, dental disease, allergies, otic disease(growing bread in their ears from all the yeast!!)

Have you looked at Hill's Prescription d/d lately? It has 8% protein... EIGHT! How in the world does a dog survive on 8 PERCENT protein??!! I'm surprised they don't just waste away or have any muscle tone.

And if you look at c/d, all it is is a high protein, low-quality food. Woo... Any of the other higher quality foods can provide that without spending an arm and a leg every month at the vet.

If you look in every single food that Hills makes, ALL of them have corn, corn gluten, wheat gluten, rice, brown rice, carbs, carbs, carbs. No wonder we see so many diabetic cats. They aren't meant to eat that many carbs. All they ever get in the wild is what has been partially digested by the ruminant or omnivorous animal they just dispatched. All of these grains and grain by-products just make it harder for the animal to get the required nutrition. Their bodies have to convert and convert these grains again and again to get any of the nutrients out of it and even then, it's just excreted as waste the majority of the time. Have you ever noticed how animals on low-quality foods have about twice as much fecal matter as compared to what they ate? Dogs and cats on Purina Dog and Cat Chow(I don't mind some of their brands as compared to the supposedly "awesome, wonderful" Hills crap), Old Roy, Beneful, Pedigree, Special Kitty(BLARGH), Science Diet, have ginormous bowel movements. They may eat 4-5 cups per day to sustain them, but out comes just as much poo. So, what are they getting out of it? A whole lot of nothing.

I have such a difficult time at the vet clinic I am at trying to explain to the veterinarians and the techs about why higher quality foods are better and the benefits of them. They think corn, wheat and all of these grains are fine for both cats and dogs and don't see any reason to change. Hill's comes to our clinic regularly, we supply it, and most everyone in the clinic feeds it because we get a discount from the representative. Alot of their pets have an extreme amount of health and behavioral issues, whereas mine don't. Poor coat quality/shedding/odor, ear infections, inappropriate urination in the house, UTIs for no reason at all, diabetes, dental disease, joint degeneration... I could go on and on. It's just a losing battle.

What the people in my clinic want are published clinical studies on paper and I haven't been able to provide that because I don't know where to look.

What are the thoughts on a Raw diet? We are looking into it currently and have 2 starter packs on order from the local pet shop. Seem to have two cats that will EAT ANYTHING and one that doesn't like much. Can admit I do not like the food they are currently on but seem to prefer it over the other food they are offered. So we come back.

There's tons of information on this website regarding raw diet. Use the search tab up top. Many of us, including myself, feed raw to our cats (and dogs). It's a wonderful diet!

I have fed Evo dry and canned to my sphynx. No grains, great quality sometimes hard to find. I've recently switched to Wellness core which is easier to find and still no grains. I like it because I can feed it to my pregnant cats toward the end of pregnancy and after as it is for cats and kittens.
