I am hoping to adopt a Sphynx, I have placed a deposit on my future Sphynx and I am so excited to bring the little one home in or around January..meanwhile I have come across an older Sphynx in my area that needs a home.

Does this raise any flags with any of you? Do you think that bringing home an adult Sphynx in September then a baby in January give the adult time to transition?

I have a domestic short hair at home who absolutely loves the company of other cats, I do not foresee any issues on my end. I was told that the cat I may be adopting needs to be the only cat, it has been my experience that cats need time to adjust and that they love the company of other cats. Thoughts?

I want to give this special older Sphynx an amazing home- I want to do the right thing for her. I just need some input. Has anyone ever done this? Should I be worried?

I would just be careful of scams. Get all the information about the older kitty first. Make sure you have medical history and know if they are utd on shots. Transitioning an adult can be tricky. You will need a special room for that kitty to get comfortable with the new environment away from your hairy kitty. It also acts as a period to see if the kitty bring any illness with them. Keep them in there for a few weeks and slowly introduce the kitties. Same goes for a kitten but they usually adapt quicker

@pdxxsphynxx2017 , I have 4 adult adoptees now :) two from a member

I was grieving over the loss of my first sphynx, turned down the first one I found that was an obvious scam -
I highly recommend you read and look for any red flags , western union, etc mentioned in this thread
How to Detect fraud sphynx cat adoption ads

And here is another good link

What to expect from a responsible sphynx breeder

I would ask a lot of questions! This way you are on the sake page and know what is ahead of you..
And always always go with your gut!

You can ask for a pic of the kitty with a local newspaper with today's date as well as an odd it,ex like a soda can etc -

I do ask the owner to take the kitty for a wellness check and to also include a listen to the heart for murmur and send me a pic of the dated receipt , vet chart notes so I can call and verify..
It may see,B like a lot to ask but you have to think of the wellness and safety of your kitty and kitty on the way ..

(My toby was brought by the owner to a local petsmart vdt using a free online vet visit coupon )

Ask if the kitty is positive for an transmittable diseases ..?

Up to date on shots , tummy or poo issues , medications , curremt health problems ? Heart problems ? Murmurs?

I am all about adopting - just know that many have no papers and limited records -
They may also be from backyard breeders who do not routine HCM screen - so there may be a higher risk for HCM

I was fortunate with 3 out of 4 having all medical records .
Only one of mine who was adopted from a reputable breeder and had all records meticulous and and was HCM scanned .

I would definitely ask why kitty needs to be the only kitty?
Some kitties never accept other kitties - my Bengal prefers the company of dogs.

Once all your questions are answered ,
Then use your best judgement with what is best for you and all kitties involved -

@pdxxsphynxx2017 ,
A lot depends on kitties personalities - some take a bit longer to transition - I highly recommend if you have the space and time to dedicate a kitty safe room for the transition .
I tend to go very sloooooow with transition and always use a kitty room for about a week to ten days for health reason When bringing in a new kitty to my crew.

There are lots of threads on intros :)
We all help each other with tips

Definitely will be looking for updates

My four adoptees all came within a few months - I do very slow intros and lots of love and patience

I would do it all over in a heart beat ! They are very very cuddly with each other and are total bed hogs!

Keep us updated

Thank you so much! I have my spare room set up as my cat room :) I have always had a special room for my Cat and this will work out great if given the opportunity to take on Maddie the new Sphynx- I really think that she will be a good fit with my family. Thank you so much for the reply.

Good luck on making a decision. Great advice already given. So only chimed in to say "thank you for thinking about adopting an eldery cat with a health issue"!

I always adopt adults. You pay a lot for a kitten and then you have to watch over them like a hawk because they will get themselves in trouble you never thought possible. An adult cat is easier in that regard and you can get years of gratitude in return.
