Good afternoon All,
On Monday I lost my beloved Toby to heart failure. He was only 5 years old. I always knew he had a heart murmur but was reassured he would grow out of it. At check ups there was never any concern. Has anyone ever experienced this in their hairless love? Was there anything I could've done to prevent this? Thanks for your time

I am so sorry for your loss, and at this time of year it has to be even harder.

My sisters baby has a heart murmur and as she is a vet tech has done all manner of research, there is nothing. Nothing but loving them for as long as you can!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am sure it is devastating. My boy is 12 and has had a murmur since he was a kitten. Some kittens do grow out of their murmur, but if so, it is usually within the first year. Some heart murmurs are just simply that and nothing more. Some members get their babies scanned at a year old even if no murmur is present. Unfortunately heart issues have been an issue for the breed so if you can scan, you get a baseline and can see if meds might help. Some babies do very well on meds. Do not blame yourself. Even the best breeders are not untouched by heart disease. Just like humans, even the best athletes can have heart issues. If you do decide to look for a baby if and when you are ready, look for breeders that have proof of scanning their breeding cats as it helps to weed out many back yard breeders. Again there is no guarantee even if the breeder scans their breeding cats, but a reputable breeder puts money into their cats in hopes on keeping healthy breeding lines. RIP Toby.
