Noah is almost 10 months old and still hasn't learned how to bury his poop! He smells it, steps on it and gets filthy sometimes. Does anyone know what I can do to make him bury his poop?

Usually its from the cat not liking the texture of the litter, they already have the natural instinct to cover the poo or pee. Also if a cat is declawed it can have this effect as well. :)

Not sure you will ever get him to cover it. One of ours never covers and the other 2 always do. It is most likely a habit now. I know it can be frustrating. Maybe try a second litter box and a different litter might be worth a try though.

When we switched litter our boy started burying it. He doesn’t always do it as sometimes he gets distracted by a kid or two, but 80% of the time he does.

When we used gravol/clay based litter he hated how it felt on his paws. We now use an all natural wheat & corn based litter that’s soft and light weight (and traps ALL the smells) which he likes digging around in.

Fun fact. Cats who will not bury their poop do so as a sign of dominance. In a household with multiple cats you will often have one cat that exhibits this behaviour. Does he also pee just at the very front of the litter box? It probably just a sign that you have a confidant little guy. My Frida is 4 and still doesn’t burry her poop, and it is perfectly normal for her not to do so

It seems like he does have the intention to bury the poop but doesn't know how to do it well. He keeps revolving the litter and ends up spreading it everywhere.

My boy Toa never covers his poop too. His brother Ross always comes running to cover the poop of Toa. So I'm still lucky. Don't know what you can do to teach a cat to cover his poop.

Hello there !
Oh dear me the poop trail !!
Now I’ve 8 poop paw prints instead of the 4 ah ha
Both of my naked babies paw either side of the poop or wee wee but never manage to cover it and yes they step into it walking out of the litter potty ,
And yep they do have smelly bums ( shushhhh don’t want to upset Cleo and Bagins talking of delicate matters )
I tend to remove the poop as soon as it’s errrr errr there ! For some reason Bagins does have smellier poops than Cleo and they eat the same
I have a covered litter potty and an open one Cleo uses the covered one ( no flap )
Now little Bagins does wee wees in the open potty tray and he does poops in the covered one
Day one of getting Mr Bagins Cleo actually did her poop just outside of the litter potty which was a shock as she never ever did anything like this before ! I really got worried and thought oh no please !!! Cleo nooooo !
But it happened just that one time
I think it’s apart of the package the paw poop marks
I keep wet wipes on top of the closed litter potty I drop a wet wipe or two on the floor used my foot on top of the wet wipe to clean up the poop paw print .then a nappy sack on my hand to dispose of the wet wipe
All is well again but we don’t get many loose poops only from Mr Bagins now . Unless Cleo steals something I’d have preferred she hadn’t lol
Xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Wow really?! That is fascinating... my little guy sometimes doesn’t cover his poop and our female kitty always does. Interesting...

One out of our four cats (a domestic short hair) doesn't cover her poop. She scrapes the wall, sides of the litter box, the floor just outside of the box, and ll round it. She will even drag stuff into the box to attempt to cover the poop, anything from random clothing to scraps of paper. Once he has finished her routine we just grab our male dometic short hair and he jumps in and covers it right up. If we miss it he patroles the boxes and covers anything that has been missed. our Sphynx is great for covering her stuff and our Devon... well he is just special lol. If we don't praise him he will howl and yowl untill we do.
p.s. a self cleaning box may be something to consider if they continue to not cover it up.

@Jynxified that sounds like my boy, Bruce. He scratches in there for 5 minutes and by the end his business is still exposed:smuggrin: I think that he THINKS he is doing such a good job, its so darn cute. Luckily he never steps in it...

Mine won’t cover his poop. He scratches at the plastic inside the walls of his box. It’s a self clean box so luckily the smell doesn’t linger long after he’s left. I have another male baby coming in September. I have a feeling he will do the same. I’ve had other males in the past who never covered their poops either. Perhaps I’m just lucky? NOT!
