Hi everyone,

My Edward has an on going anal gland issue. I made another tread about our journey with this. In short it started off an anal
Gland abscess that ended up being lanced and drained and he was give betacillan clav antibiotics for 10 days. 16 days later ceom
The day it was lanced and drained- and 6 days after antibiotics, it came right back. Huge hard lump and turning purple. I took him back to the vet. They drained it and increased his dose which made him very sick. Bad diarrhea and throwing up so much. We had to stop the medication after 6 days. The vet felt it was enough to clear it. We stopped all meds and he can no longer have betacillan clav doe his bad reaction. I was told if this comes back- he will be given a convenia injection. This is where I freaked out. I’ve read Horror stories online about cats and this injection. I’m so scared. Well a whole month has gone by and today Edward has a small purple lump on that anal gland. I’ve already contacted the vet to take him in hopefully in the morning. But if she says he needs an antibiotic- it will be covenia. My biggest fear because of what I’ve read online. Can anyone who has first hand experience with covenia please please please help me by giving me advice and a timeline of symptoms from this antibiotic? Thank you.

hello, i have not had to give my kitten convenia yet. but as a veterinary professional i have given the injection to plenty of cats. of course there are risks to the injection, just like any injection or any other type of treatment (including oral meds). i personally have not seen any issues with any type of pet post injection. it is relatively safe to give but understand your reluctance. just trust in the info received from your vet, talk about your concerns with them.

it’s hard to trust online information, for anything. there are a lot of misinformation out there and when you see reviews, you got to take it with a grain of salt. most people only review/report when they are very dissatisfied and misinformed rather than reporting good things.

Thank you all so much. Great information and you’re right to not always trust what’s online. I have an appointment to take him to be seen this morning and we’re leaving in 25 minutes. Today it has faded a bit in purple coloring and just has red coloring in the center of the scar area. It almost looks bruised. The little swelling has gone as well. Vet is aware and still wants to check it to be for sure as to what is happening. I’ll keep everyone posted.

So I have interesting interactions with Covenia. None bad. All with my furry Foxy. She had UTI and they had to keep giving her repeat doses because it was so stubborn and miraculously it not only fixed the UTI but managed to cure a years-old old head tilt from an ear infection!!!!
Just recently she had blood in her urine so they tried the Covenia again first but it didnt work immediately so they had to find something else after the urine was cultured. She has had no ill effect from the Covenia shots. I dont know if this helps. Healing vibes coming your way.

I was always nervous about injectable antibiotics due to potential reactions. I recently had to give Dolly the covenia injection due to not being able to tolerate the Clavamox that was prescribed to her due to vomiting. She did just fine on it.

Thank you all so much for sharing your stories this has helped to ease my mind a bit. We’re not out of the woods yet but we did get him in the morning to the vet. She took a look at the spot on his anal gland scar and was a bit confused. It went from completely purple to having faded into a red color. So it very much resembles a bruise. Zero swelling, he is acting normal and playing, eating and drinking. And no fever. So she went ahead and tried to express his anal glands and was pleasantly surprised that both were empty. Both felt normal. And there is no swelling. However that spot got angry and more red. So she squeezed on it a bit and nothing came out. She determined there is no infection. But this can be a few things, one being a bruise from over grooming the area. Two- it can be broken blood vessels since it’s on his scar which is still very fragile skin. This can happen from over grooming, or sitting wrong. Three - it can be a damaged like area around the anal gland that gets irritated if not fully drained each time. So since there is no infection detected no need for antibiotics. I was told to watch him closely and note any changes. If I notice he is lethargic, not eating good, keeping to himself, or if I notice the purple or red spreading, or swelling - I need to bring him in for a recheck and possible antibiotics, which was confirmed to be the Covina injection due to his adverse reaction with betacillan clav. So I spoke with her about the covenia injection and shared my fears. She told me that she is not a big fan of a 14 day antibiotic injection herself but if it helped me - she said - she’d been administering this antibiotic to pets for 15 years and only ever seen one adverse reaction. She assured me they are here to help every step of the way and they would care for him if anything was not right. It really put me at ease. I’m grateful for our vet. In the meantime all paws crossed this red/purple spot fades away and with all the hopes in the world it is just a weird bruise. I’ll keep you posted. Appreciate you all.

Annndddd we are back!!!! We ended up not needing the convenia injection. And we had a small flare up in August and just as fast as it came upon us- it left. For 5 glorious months we’ve had zero issues. Well, that is until this past Saturday. Edward was a little whiny which is typical of him if he has any pain or isn’t feeling good. So sure enough I checked his back side and my worst nightmare was back and very swollen. Unbelievable. I remembered the vet had told me before to gently press on it to see if it is hard or soft and to check the color- it was pink the normal
Color of his skin and very soft and when I gently pressed it had ruptured. Again, I was shocked. I immediately cleaned him up us g the glandex wipes and jumped online to make a vet appointment. Because it had ruptured I knew to keep and eye on the skin color. As it stayed his normal skin color I knew we can hold to see his vet- but if it turns red or purple we need the pet emergency. Luckily it stayed normal and continued to drain and he seemed ok. My vet could get us in the morning and thank goodness because the skin was starting to turn purple this morning. We took him first thing this morning and the vet began clindamyacin liquid two times a day 1ml for 10 days, then we will have a recheck and bloodwork and schedule surgery to remove the one anal gland. Our vet said since this is the 3rd rupture but 4th infection in 7 months it is now considered chronic and it’s best for everyone including Edward to remove it. So all finger crossed the clindamyacin continues to do its job and not make Edward sick so we can proceed with clearing the infection. And surgery in a few weeks.
This has been a wild ride.

Good news so far….are you seeing them over-groom? Would an e-collar help for a week or so to prevent this?
I missed answering your question, he was not over grooming , turns out it was broken blood vessels or capillaries under the skin that have been damaged by to many abcessed ruptures. So if the anal gland gets to full it puts pressure on those capillaries and the skin turns a very light shade of purple. So we’d been giving glandex powder in his food and it helped. But we figured it was fixed and stopped giving him the glandex powder back in October and here we go again with a whole new abcess.
