Do you vaccinate your sphynx?

Yes we vaccinate all three of our Sphynx Kitties. We have a dog that goes outdoors and we want to make sure the Sphynx are protected from anything she may track into the house.

Well, I quit having the rabies shot given to Izmae.
So many have had problems. I'm not taking a chance.
We don't have other animals and if she would ever get out and
get lost she couldn't make it outside anyway. Then, if someone
found her and never reported it. I wouldn't never know anything
about her either. So, I just don't think I will ever do the rabies again.
Plus, I never take her out in public. I prefer not to.

I don't get a rabies vaccine and neither do my babies. Too many horror stories with tumors at the injection spot. And for what .....the rabies vaccine by law is one year because it's protecting humans (at the expense of overvaccinating pets).
I live in a big city. And my cats never go outside. What am I supposed to be worried about, a bat flying across the ocean to Florida, flying through my screened windows, and strategically biting my cat? I might as well get the rabies vaccine myself if that's what I'm worried about. I'm not just saying no but h3ll no!!!

All the shots scare me to death...gizmo is due for some but there are a few listed in the contract that I promised never to give him.

Take it from one that did have contact with a rabid bat and had to take rabies shots (not pleasant at all). Bats live under bridges and in cracks of buildings, attics, soffits, inside walls...etc. They are mostly insectivors....meaning...the bright lights of the city bring them out to feed. Odds are rare that you or your pets would encounter a rabid bat, but it can happen. A rabid bat stays more stationary and with the sickness, does not pay attention to staying out of reach of predators or humans therefore making it much more likely to come in contact with them. They groom themselves like cats putting their saliva on their fur.

P.S. I forgot to mention earlier that the bat that I was subjected to was in my home. I woke up one morning and the bat was 3 feet from the floor holding onto the curtain. I have no idea if he touched me in my sleep or not. Just the fact that it was in my home, the Dept of Health gave me stern advice/warnings to get vaccinated asap. I had a thorough search done to determine how it got in. Nothing was found. Estimated guesses were it got in thru a soffit or other small space (like mice, they can squeeze thru the smallest of spaces), then in thru the attic area and maybe thru a vent duct possibly.

jwoodys, that sounds like a nightmare. Still, look at their reaction....they automatically assumed that the bat in your house had rabies and that it bit you. OK I understand doctors want to be safe, but this is the kind of thinking that leads to the rabies vaccine being an annual requirement. Human doctors and lawmakers are being so protective of humans that they overlook the welfare of the pet. Studies have shown that the rabies vaccine is actually effective past the one year, so some cats have gotten the sarcoma for nothing. At the end of the day I feel like the vaccine is the greater risk considering where I live, but I also understand where you're coming from.
Condo.... They didn't assume the bat had rabies. The bat was confiscated, sent to the lab and tested for rabies. It had rabies. If anything is assumed, it's because if nothing is done, the result is death. Not a risk anyone should take. I don't think that is an over reaction. The bat could have bitten me. The bite of a bat is so small that the bite marks literally can disappear afterward. During sleep, it could have bitten and I would not have even known it.
I am aware studies have shown that rabies vaccines last longer than a year. I agree with you in part as far as rabies vaccines and pets, however I don't think they are protecting humans so much. Like human doctors, I wonder if it's not more about their wallets. Can't remeber the name of the test....to tell the level of vaccine in a pet or something like that? My mind has drawn a blank...do you know what test that is? I saw it in another post but can't remember where.
Our conversation has peaked my curiosity and questioned some of my views. More info is required.

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone on this one...it really scares me so bad. In md its illegal to not get rabies every three years I believe. Giz isn't even three. They make you sign a piece of paper saying you refuse it. At his last check up a few months ago they told me he was due for shots and I refused and they looked at me like I was a piece of shit pet owner. In my gut tho I just can't bring myself to get them for him. So your post is comforting.
