Feeding Pork

Does anyone feed ground up pork without problems? My local grocery store has it cheaper than beef and turkey so I wanted to buy that to mix with either beef or turkey.

Yea, have never given pork to my kitties.. but I have been told it is even hard to digest for humans... that our bodies can't really process it... so if I were to give my kitties raw I do not think I would include pork, myself. If you happen to try it, keep us updated on how they like it.

Do NOT feed pork to any pets! I have a friend that owns a BBQ catering service and he used to give scraps to his dog and then his dog got really sick and died because of it. It is not good for them at all.

Wow, I had no idea pork was a no no. I have fed it to my dogs and they love it. But then again they eat anything...

Mine love pork but only grass fed, I would never feed them store bought pork. We raise our own so that makes it easier.

My vet that I used for approx. 30 years before he retired last year said to never give my dogs pork. When he told me that, I didn't have a cat at that moment, so I don't know if it would have applied to them as well. He said it was bad for their digestive systems.
Just because a dog or cat goes hog wild (no pun intended) for pork, it doesn't mean it's safe/healthy for them to eat. Just like humans, how many of us love to eat fatty foods, lots of salt on our foods and sugary junk too? Just because we eat bad stuff, it doesn't mean it's ok for us to do so.

Good question. We always tell dog owners no cause it can cause pancreatitis since the ham is so fatty. Not sure on cats , prob cause how many fuzzy cats eat people food vs sphynx cats. I have seen several cats with pancreatitis (which is very hard to diagnosis) but we have no idea how they came down with it.

I've heard that pork in certain countries isn't tested for a type of bacteria/parasite/whatever, and that it can make a cat sick...but I do not understand all that stuff. I actually wanted to ask if a cat food is safe if it contains pork, cause now I've gone paranoid. It's Animonda Von Feinsten cat food and all flavors have a bit of pork inside. I guess I'm just being a freak, they wouldn't sell it with pork if it made the cats sick, I guess it's cooked so the bacteria is probably dead - it is not same as raw pork..

Can Cats Eat Raw Pork?

Pork is fine unless your country has some particular regulation problem with it, the US does not. Pork is lighter and easier to digest than beef and other red meat. Just avoid any flavoring/extra salt bacon, ham, etc.. as with other meats

I'll chime in because I used to work for a food company. I got a tour of one of the slaughterhouses....the cleanliness was a huge deal....it's so easy to get the meat contaminated if you aren't super careful. For me, what matters most is where the animal was sourced and how the meat has been handled up until it gets to your freezer. For a contra-example, would you feed Chinese rabbit?

Now personally I don't feed my cats pork because it's fatty. Same goes for duck. But that's a whole other matter.

I just purchased some raw refrigerated cat food from a Pet store that sells natural/holistic foods and they have a selection of raw foods in the refrigerator and different types of meat (chicken, turkey, venison, duck, pork). I picked up the venison one because my husband used to feed his dog (the dog suffered from allergies to other meats such as chicken and turkey) venison pretty often and she did very well with it and ate it without a problem. What do you think of this option?

I forgot what exactly is inside pork that we should be careful about when feeding to cats, so if someone knows please inform me...it's not the trichinella parasite but something else...?

I have seen both opinions too... but on my IBD cat page they recommend it as easy to digest. And its the main ingredient in most of the "prescription" gastro diets. So who knows!!
