I've never pre-frozen meat before using it, but I buy local fresh stuff when making my own (cleveland has a huge year-round farmers' market). Not sure if that helps.

I buy ground turkey from local grocery store and I don't freeze before mixing. Once the BitR is mixed in I do freeze in portion sizes but that's for my convenience. I buy a couple weeks worth of meat and mix it and then freeze. Each morning I take out enough for the next day and thaw in fridge over night.
