If you notice an injury to your cat’s tail, it is best to see your vet. Some tail injuries can cause permanent damage. The spinal cord doesn’t extend all the way into the cat tail, an injury to the tail can still cause nerve damage. When the spinal cord ends, the nerves that help to control and provide sensation to the tail, back legs, bladder, large intestine, and anus still extend outward without the protection of the spine’s bones. Pulling on a cat’s tail or a sprain/break can over-stretch or even tear these nerves and cause temporary and in some cases permanent inability to walk, hold their tail upright, incontinence, or chronic pain.

TIP: Also please know that we have seen several cats with severe tail injuries from getting their tail caught in cords to blinds (tuck them up tight to the top) and injuries from elastic cords on cat trees like the one in the second pic that has the red ball hanging from it. It is highly recommended to cut these toys off completely.
