Cats purr by using a neural oscillator in their brain to send rhythmic messages to their voice box muscles. This causes the muscles to rapidly relax & contract. As a cat breathes in and out, air passes over the vibrating vocal cords, creating this rumbling vibration. To me, it is the best sound in the world!
