Hi all,
I have just adopted a 3 year old sphynx from the local cat rescue. He’s called Mr Big. Having taken him home, he seems very confident in the spare room- into everything, very curious and keen to engage when we go in to meet him. This is very different- other regular cats we’ve owned have hidden for 3 days- 2 weeks before coming out to meet us. Should we let him out of the room to explore the house or keep him confined for a couple of days?!

Sphynxs are so loving, most warm up to their humans pretty soon.
Do you have any other pets? If not, I would let Mr. big explore the house. Just keep an eye on him.

We do- we have a small non reactive terrier dog who is very keen to make friends. We plan to keep them apart a little while and to supervise very closely. I cannot believe how confident this sphynx is- he is incredibly outgoing!

I personally would set up a wellness check and get a poop sample cleared before introducing to your pup.

Congrats Happiest Gotcha day ! so happy for you and adorable Mr Big! he struck gold in your heart and home. sphynx are cat,dog, monkey, baby all in one for life. different than any furbaby I have shared my life with. what is your pups name? pic? all paws are family.

sharing , I have all adoptees, pups and kitties. rotties n aussies. I do super super slow intros. I can share tips.

I adopted an aussie 3 days ago. slow and steady wins the race. I set them up for success. set up safe room. I keep collar and leash on pup and even have pour around tied to my waist. I let kitty watch from a distance and teach pup "leave it" "watch me "and redirect. short training times and leave on a positive note.

for decades I have trained slow intros with reactive pups. time,love , and patience. I always say it is my job to keep all paws safe. I have done super slow intros with an abused rottie who never met a cat, etc. crate or safe room set up and rotate free roaming. it's a process and pays off. lol my little tiny girl ended up ruling 2 rotties. she would sit in the middle of their dog bed and allow them to sleep with their heads on the corners of the dog bed.

congrats on your adoption of Mr. Big! When I bring a new pet home I tend to have them separate from any resident pets in the beginning. I have done this with the cats especially as I have large breed dogs. They have all done well with this and have eventually become part of the fold of my household.

All is good! Mr Big wanted out and to roam the whole house! Our dog, Tean, is on a lead (leash) the whole time, she is so intrigued by the cat and we are keeping it super slow. Both are chilled out at home.

All is fab. I cannot believe how much this cat wants to play. He likes feathers, toilet roll, hair bands and scrunched up paper…any top tips for toys? I have no idea how I will cut his claws or get his ears and eyes clean. I cannot imagine, he is not that cuddly as yet- perhaps it’s because he is a rescue cat.

A great tip about trying to get them calm down and trust you so you can do more things like clip nails etc…is to develop a regular ritual. I swear by the throw a soft blanket in the dryer and swaddle them it in when it is quiet time…maybe when you watch TV at night etc. They often think of you as their safe place when you do this. @Bigella. Also, I would be very careful with the hair ties. We have seen cats ingest them become they become obsessed and blockages can occurr.

My crew love the spring toys and of course Dat Bird to play together. They also love catnip toys.

My duo oddly enough like the small stuffies they can carry around. Their favorite is the eat mor chikin cow from Chick fil a of all things. They also loved this scrunchy bag of chips that I got from tractor supply store. My problem is the dogs sometimes eat them so I have to be very careful not to let them around the main part of the house.

My first sphynx loved the spring toys and wand with the worm on the end from Jackson Gallaxy not sure if he still makes them.
