@nudebea , glad Kiwi's eye is much better. hoping the non poo issue gets resolved . sharing my seniors I switched up water bowls food dishes raised . you can try to raise them and see if it helps. my nakids even like a large round corningware pyrex dish for their watering hole now.
* I found mine drink more water when I put the water bowl about 5 feet away from food dish in the large shallow round pyrex dish instead of right next to each other or in a double feeder
Thank you, I will certainly try your tips. As I am mixing extra water into her wet food to make it easier for her to lap up I am wondering if she simply isn't that thirsty, plus she is still not having any dry food on vets advice( for at leat 2 weeks after her op) She also seems to get food "stuck" in her mouth on occasion despite really mashing it up, then panics and tries to remove it with her paw. Again she has eaten her breakfast will, still with a small dose of the gentle laxity, no poo! I am calling the et today to see if we can book her in for checks again
Well she went back to the vets last night and he said we are doing pretty much everything we can with the water mixed in with her food and lactulose. He said the he has seen this before after GA due to the powerful medications used. He gave her a mini enemas ( she was very good about it ) and she did actually poo in her carrier on the way home, although nothing since. He has given us two more mini enemas to administer here at home, one this morning and one in the evening. If no results, she has to go back to the vets tomorrow for a full enema under ight sedation, so, praying for results! but really not looking forward to giving her the mini this morning! Has anyone had this " exeprinec" ? If so how did it go with the home enema!
Well my girl is back at the vets today, We have just dropped her off and she is due to have a full enema hopefully just with sedation , they did say that if she seems too uncomfortable they may have to go to fill GA which I am seriously hoping does not happen. The mini exams dint really work and this morning the vet couldn't feel any faces when he did a rectal exam so thinking that if there is a blockage it is higher in the colon. This is a sudden onset problem as far as we can tell, it comincided with her going under GA 2 weeks ago for dental , up until that day she padded poo without fail daily. We know she hasn't eaten anything that she shouldn't so the only thing we can think of is the effects of the GA.
Quite worried and will be very relieved , hopefully , to get a call from the vet later today saying they have had a good result from the enama
Sending positive vibes. What a stressful situation for you. Hope the vet will find out what is going on with your girl this time. Please sent an update when you can. We all worry with you. Hugs
@nudebea , lair prayers and positive vibes for sweet Kiwi's procedure today. all paws are family. so sorry going thru all this. She has the bestest mum , love and care.
Thank you all for your positive vibes, Im sure they make a difference. Well Kiwi went back to the vets on Friday morning for a full enema. They did unfortunately end up giving her GA and while she was under (everything was OK thankfully ) we received a call to say that they could not find any evidence of faeces blocking the colon and asked if they could take a radiograph which we agreed to. That showed no problems. either. When we collected her Friday evening they showed me the X ray. There were no blockages in her colon , just a little poo further down which they said was normal. There was no evidence of spinal anomalies that could affect motility and her organs otherwise appeared normal.
She recovered from the GA fine and has resumed eating again. As this lack of pooing is very sudden onset and coincided with her original dental op, plus a change in diet ie no dry food, they think it may be down to either the drugs used during GA ( no ketamine was used) or the change in diet. Her stomach was largely empty signalling she had digested her early breakfast that day but as wet food has far fewer calories and is largely water, they feel that she is simply absorbing the nutrients and producing very little waste.
They have recommended feeding tuna I sunflower oil( we tried mixing in a little olive oil with her food but she sniffed it out and rejected it), as she has now started to do with the lactulose so we will have to start giving that directly into her mouth with a little syringe ) Otherwise she does actually seem ok !
So for now we will just keep plowing on, introducing a little dry food slowly as her mouth is healing well and hoping for a good outcome.
It’s great so much was ruled out. Hopefully it is just a matter fo time for her to become regular. You are awesome doing everything possible to see what is going on.
@nudebea , you are an amazing mum and continued positive vibes for sweet Kiwi. alot ruled out for sure which is good news. I too read the anesthesia cause constipation.
you can check with vet if a little 100 % pure virgin coconut oil, just the teeniest amount, like 1/8 teaspoon ,would help since she is picky with the olive oil. mix in food or put on a spoon, or maybe even put on paw to see if she will lick it off?
other thoughts to ask vet is a teenie amount of 100% Pure canned pumpkin. My Tobylove liked it warmed for a few seconds, or psyllium husk powder I know members have mentioned in the past.
prayers for getting back to normal poo movements.
you are not alone. been there done that with my bubba bear pup in the past who had a rough go of it with his dental extraction and poo issues afterwards. he liked it in food or off a spoon.
Thank you for tour support. We have given her some tuna in sunflower oil ( the vet suggested that)and , until this morning, she ate it, but has just turned her nose up today. So I gave her a little Royal Canin wet food and she ate that , so no problems eating just choosy. Still no poo but otherwise she seems ok .
And don't we spoil them ! Although she is still "roughing it" and actually eating out of her bowl as opposed to off a spoon she does prefer me to give her the food while she is laying on the sofa cuddled up in her warm blankets. So I am sat with some paper towels under the bowl and holding it while madam dines !
Glad to see that the vet was able to rule out any obstruction or abnormality. I agree it is likely due to the meds and lack of dry food that is keeping her from defecating.
@nudebea , sending Kiwi positive vibe head smooches and a Big happy 12th Birthday kiss!
she has the bestest mum.
oh, sharing, my tobylove ate better when he was in his blankie with a little shallow stainless bowl of wet food. Clairebare developed the same habit now and cleans the bowl 2x a day waiting in her blankie with her little teeny meow for her food.
Thank you all for wishing Kiwi a happy 12 th birthday ! Since Friday she has had two bowel movements, not as regular as before the op but better than nothing. This seems to have coincided with gradually introducing dry food back into her diet, just a small handful of royal Canin urinary care with a little juice from a tin of tuna drizzled onto them to make them softer (she only has four teeth left) . She ate them fine so pleased to report that other than less frequent bowel movements, she is doing well. Once again thank you all for your support and good vibes
