Our new sphynx Oswald, who just got on friday, has a little problem. He is a happy and sweet 7 month old cutie pie, however the vet found Demodex Cati mites in his ears and his skin is very scaly. Demodex are normal in small numbers, however he found several which is a little worrisome. Demodex is one of the two types of mange. It can be a sign of a larger problem. Usually something compromising to immune. He tested negative to the big scary things. (FIV and FeLV as well as cancer). We are treating the mites, if they don't come back he may be just fine, however, if they do we will need to run more tests, to see if we can find the problem. It could be anything from Diabetes to several other immune problems. Demodex mites are rare in cats, usually something they see in dogs. Keep up your prayers for him everyone.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed for Oswald!

Mites, stay away! Oswald doesn't want you. So leave him alone! :).

Positive thoughts are sent Oswald's way. I hope it clears up fast and there is not an underlying issue on top of it.

@nettie1221 , ((healing hugs)) for Oswald
Was this diagnosis confirmed with a skin scraping test?
Are there vet instructions to keep him away from your furries while being treated mad settles in?

If so , I am glad you caught it early and he can get treated.. He is getting the best love and care with you-
Good news that he was clear of the other things-

Keeping all paws up and positive here for you and Oswald!
Looking forward to healing updates!

Ps- did you contact that breeder? Do her other kitties have this too?
Do you have a contract?
Perhaps she can refund your money to help towards Oswalds vet bill/treatment

vet took two skin scrapings. One by his head, and one near his rear end to determine if it was a localized or generalized infection. The one near his head was positive, however the other was inconclusive. He is on orders to stay away from the furries, though my vet, whom I love btw, put all three on ivermectin as a procaution as the furries were already around him. The little guys has to take a lime-sulphur bath twice a week. Which is very hard on his skin, but will kill the mites. I contacted the breeder and she had no idea what Demodex was, however she paid for my vet bill no problem and is having all the others she has tested to see if they have them. The goods news is, if it is a localized infection its nothing to worry about. However it is very worrisome that He has scaly skin on his back end as that is a sign of a generalized Demodex infection. There were none actually in the rear skin scraping that the vet took, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Apparently the little buggers are very hard to see. Demodex gatoi, which these is not are actually far more contagious then Demodex Cati. Still scared me that the furries could get it too. Though the mites themselves are not deadly, its more the underlying condition that brought them on.

we are on day three of the medicine, his ears are no gunkier then my old sphynx. Which is good, because he had serious build up. I am just hoping it stays that way, we aren't running any more tests until we see if the mites come back. His skin is slightly less scaly today after his bath. Its hard to know though.

Ossie now has bad yellow eye discharge. However despite that this is good news. It is feline herpes which causes upper respiratory infections, but is highly treatable. Unfortunately most likely all our others will get it before this is over. The vet says its very common in cats its basically being treated with L-lysine as well as the ivermectin for the mites. He should be better very soon. The vet seems to feel better knowing what is actually wrong. He tells me cats live very very long lives with this condition. So over all I feel better knowing what is going on.

3 medications later, he is finally completely improving. He hates the medicine for his eyes, but look like he just has feline herpes and he will always have it, we have to clear up this outbreak and get rid of the mites. But there were none in his ear at all when went back to the vet yesterday
