Skin Irritation

Hey all,

I have no idea what to do with my little guy. His skin is inflamed and appears to be quite itchy a lot lately. His diet has not changed, no new cleaning products or any new fragrances/laundry detergents. I ordered some Dr. Maggie Skin Care Ointment so I’m hoping it’ll help. He gets little scabs and we help him out by soaking them off but his skin looks terrible. It’s mostly next to his ears, I did put something on them so his ears look moist in the photo, it’s normally quite dry.
Otherwise, he seems to be doing fine. Playing and running around. Anyone have similar issues? How did you fix it? Breaks my heart seems him this way. He in no way appears painful. Can I use a certain kind of oil to help with dry skin, maybe coconut oil? He turned 2 in August.

Cats can develop allergies to things they never had issue with before at any time. What is the main protein in the food you are feeding them…chicken is often the culprit. @ToriEclipse

Mainly chicken and Salmon

We see chicken is often the culprit. Perhaps try eliminating chicken and go with another protein. Hopefully that might be the issue. Please keep us updated as your experience can help others in the future. @ToriEclipse

As @Catzzzmeow suggested I would try eliminating the chicken. I would be very careful with shampoos or oil cause that can make the rash getting worse. Maybe try only water to not irritating his skin. Or baby wipes with no lotion or alcohol.

We had this exact issie with our female sphynx. Ask the vet to look for skin yeast infection. it can be that simple. we fought with her rash and open sores for almost 4 months before the vet had a light bulb moment. It is a really easy fix if that is the problem. We had tried all sorts of cleaners, oatmeal soaks, lotions, wipes. it would calm for a few days, maybe, and then come back worse.

we had gone through all the allergies, laundry, you name it. then one of the vets did a simple tape test and 1 bottle of shampoo later......she is all clear.

sorry i forgot the most important part. her sores, rashes and locations are the exact same as yoir poor cat.

this was her. i know its not super easy to see, but if you look around her ears, all those spots are sores bc of her scratching. they were around her neck, down her arms. she would lick and scratch herself raw. We ended up having to put her in a cone, so she would stop. Then we got the shampoo. within 48 hours, there was a marked difference.

where we live, you can only get it at the vet. It wasnt very expensive.

I am in the US and have used it with good results. sharing for those in the US, I got online on chewy.

And i never even thought to look online! Silly me.....i was told it wasnt available for regular purchase. Luckily, after prices to ship here, it is about the same as what the vet costs. You have opened my eyes, thank you.

Hello! I am just coming across this thread as I am struggling with a questionable skin condition with my five month old female. I started to notice small pigmented, flat, spots mostly prominent on her belly. I’ve noticed this in very recent months around the same time I introduced chicken into her diet!

fyi many are sensitive to chicken as a protein and can get those spots. I see you mention you recently introduced to chicken. any change of litter ? some can get yeasty from corn litters, worlds best litter, etc. here is a link from the info center
