I'm frustrated with commercial raw and thinking about going back to BitR. Issue I had before was finding a good source for the meat. They have a chicken protein allergy so that's out but they can do turkey, goose, duck ect. I haven't tried beef more than once. They seemed to have tummy issues with it so I never gave it to them again. They seemed to have a hard time digesting it. Lots of noises and gurgling and both seemed to almost throw up. But that was a commercial one too so I'm willing to try it again and see how it settles with them. So what would be the best way to find a good source for meat? What questions should I ask?

Google or search yellow pages for butchers near you. You'll likely find an array of small butchers that really buy from a larger supplier in town, and larger butchers that bring in their own from the source. You may also stumble on suppliers to restaurants -- which might be awesome. Search search search.

Depending on your own beliefs, you may want to ask if they carry hormone and antibiotic free meats. Of course also ask for price lists or get an estimate for ground/stewing/non-ground:
  • 1 trial lb. each of turkey, beef, venison, etc.
  • 10 lbs (or whatever they consider bulk or next price point) of each above meat
Then google search reviews for these butchers (try Yelp and just "XYZ Butcher review").

I suggest 1 trial lb. each of the meats you want to test on your nakeds. 1 lb. of meat will make 1.5 lbs. of raw using BiTR.

Then it's time to test on your nakeds!!!

Here's a post I did that might help a bit:

Let me know how it works out!

I did a bit more research on a local market that has a great butcher I like to get our meat from. Always looked fresher than other places, no large amount of meat out in case. You ask for what you want and they go cut it. I didn't realize they carried so much. Duck, turkey goose rabbit ect. I'll have to give them a call and see what they can do bulk wise and what the price point is. I'm over fussing with commercial and trying to find it in stock! I'd rather be in control in that area.

I totally hear you, @Calicocious . A lot of good butchers can get things in for you too.

With my main butcher, I can pretty much get anything if I order in advance. Guaranteed freshness that way too!

Enjoy!
