So last weekend, Cleopatra started having some diarrhea, nothing horrible, but enough that we started giving her more pumpkin. We weren't too worried because she reacts like this sometimes, but last night she stayed in my lap for 2 hours--unusual for her in the summer. Then this morning I got up to find that she had pooped on the hall carpet outside the litterbox room. She refused to eat her breakfast, and climbed into my lap again for about an hour. Then she threw up twice. I had saved the stool sample that she left on the carpet, and the two of us went off to the vet this morning.
We saw a vet who was new to us, and I was very impressed with him. Cleo absolutely hates going to the vet, and she growled and hissed at him the minute he walked in. He totally ignored her and talked to me for 10 minutes while she relaxed, but when he had to examine her, she started with yelling, cussing and non-stop growling. We discussed all the things that could be causing her upset, and decided to start with probiotics and Kaopectate and see if they stop the problem. But before that, the vet wanted to give Cleo some Barium. He left and came back with an aide and a couple of towels. Cleo was sitting in her stroller, and the aide put the towel over her.
Cleo screamed louder than I have ever heard her when that towel covered her. She lashed out at the aide, so I asked her to take the towel off. Then I soothed my baby and went to pick her up. She screamed again, and kept screaming when I put her on the table. The vet was able to get the barium down her, but with all the screaming, I think we all suffered hearing loss! As soon as Cleo was allowed back in her stroller, she calmed right down and hissed at everyone else in the office.
We came home and Cleo ate like she had never had food before! So far, she hasn't had any more vomiting or diarrhea, and I hope everything stays well. The good news is that she is probably NOT contagious, so the vet thinks we will be okay bringing Marcus home. Say a quick Lair prayer if you will that Cleopatra will continue to be all right. Sorry for the loooong post!
