We had to make the decision last night to say goodbye to our Walter. For the second time in as many weeks he was having respiratory distress. We gave him an extra dose of lasix but saw no improvement- his respiratory rate was hovering around 45-50 and his breaths were wet and crackly. We knew this time would come and we wanted to let him go before he was suffering or in pain.
We held him and kissed him for a while and then put a warm sweater on him and gave him a feast of sardines, which he ate with his usual gusto. Then we went to our vet and held him as he passed. The hardest part for us was making the decision to let him go even though he was still alert and eating and able to get around. We just didn't want to wait until it was a desperate situation...we think we made the right choice for him.
We love you Walter-- our Ballsy McGee, our baby Wally.
