What does a Sphynx eat?

I finally get to pick my baby up on Sunday. I’ve done sooooo much research and reading on these cats so I feel like I should know the answer. But I feel like I’ll get a better answer from people who live daily with these babies.
So, my question is: what do you feed your nakie babies?

Jaspers breeder currently had him eating Royal Canin but she said now he just flat out refuses to eat it. He will try and eat the dog food before he eats the Royal Canin. (But she doesn’t let him) She feeds his parents “4Health all stages” and she gets that at Tractor supply and he said he seems to like that. But she asked me if I had a wet food in mind that I was planning on getting for him and she would get some and see how he likes it. When I try and research into different foods I get overwhelmed and honestly a lot of conflicting information.

I know raw is best but any type of raw meat makes me cringe. So i want to find a wet/dry combo for him and if nothing works then I will venture into raw land.

@JaspersMama20 I would keep feeding your kitten what he has been having because if he has no skin problems and no diarrhoea and you are on a winner. He is probably just testing the waters by refusing to eat what the breeder gave him. I will keep giving him what the breeder was giving him if his skin and his poos are good.

Keep in mind he is settling in as well so that’s why he’s appetite might be different.

But if he has no health issues and no skin conditions or stomach problems then I wouldn’t change anything.

I've read a lot of posts from people having issues with Royal Canin. If you just do a search on Royal Canin I think you'll find them. But regardless of that, what if he just doesn't like it? I'm of the opinion that sometimes one side pleases the other, sometimes it's the other side's turn. I've had people over and they'll be like....3 cats???? I always say yes, but they let me live here as long as I treat them well

I'm a raw feeder but I do occasionally buy canned food for my guys. My "go to" right now is Instinct brand.

@JaspersMama20 Yes dry food is good for teeth and vitamins but wet balanced food is good for kidneys and hydration.

My girls get both but mostly wet 80% and teeth cleaning daily is important to avoid extractions.

We are on hills science prescription for both wet and dry food.

My cats are on raw but sometimes I feed them wet (Weruva) and kibbles (Carna4 - no synthetics from China and all identifiable ingredients; or Fromm just for variety) so if there are any emergencies they can be fed anything or at least be easier to feed.

Petsumerreport.com is a great site. I used that a lot when I was buying pet store food.

The lady that runs that site also runs truthaboutpetfood.com which is great for finding out about pet food recalls. She'll even report on problems before an official recall is announced. Great resource.

My cat was on Royal Canin Siamese up until he was 3 and had a sudden bout of allergies. We suspected allergies. We took him off and placed him on a raw diet (nature’s logic and vital essentials patties and nibs and stellas). After finding the right combo for allergies which turned out to be turkey he had to be removed from raw! This due to a heart condition that was discovered! LOL So ironically he is back on Royal Canin. However, he is on Ultramino Hypoallergenic and so far this is the best option for him. All this to say that yes we had trouble with royal canin also until the Ultramino version. Also to Make note: my great dane and two poodles were all on Royal Canin and did really well all their lives. So it might just depend on the cat. I do know that diet and sphynx = nightmare! Sooooo sensitive. So if you have found something he can handle, stick to it! I feel it is very individual and almost no point in asking anyone! LOL! I mean that in a compassionate way. Vladimir has been worth every struggle.

If a cat is allergic to a certain protein, it doesn't matter whether you feed that protein cooked or raw. For example, assume a cat is allergic to turkey......cooked turkey or raw turkey will both trigger an allergic reaction.

Hydrolyzing gets around the problem.

That said, if you knew what the sensitivity was to, you could avoid the problem ingredient(s). It's easier said than done because commercial cat foods have so many things in them; it's easier to accomplish if you make food at home because you control the ingredients. It's even harder if you have another condition - ugh. But yes, they are worth the struggle

Yes. That was in part why I initially went raw - to determine what he was allergic to. Even the raw canned and dried had other ingredients As you mentioned. Freeze dried was the best option. I did not end up finding out exactly what the allergy was. Chicken and Beef seemed almost certain, but with so much happening at one time and with a race to get things normal due to the heart it was hell. Turkey seemed the least reactive for him in particular and had a larger amount of taurine, supposedly.

True. Turkey hearts are loaded with taurine more than chicken hearts. There's been something going on for a while that's made them hard to find though. I'm not sure what the deal is but you can't find turkey hearts anywhere now.

Yes, it's hydrolyzed. I had to read about it to figure out what they're doing. Food allergies are a response to the protein.

I'm not sure what you were trying to buy. I have no problem buying ground turkey but that's the only turkey I buy.
