Sigh. We had to take Nora to the ER tonight with coughing and gagging. The vet did X-rays and everything looked great, no infection, no obstructions. He said she had trachea inflammation. So we are going to switch to a low dust litter tomorrow, do eye ointment for the week as well as a mild antibiotic. It gave us all a scare at midnight, but she is running around playing with her sister now so all is good! $250 vet bill, but she is so worth it.

A little natural yoghurt with probiotics may help ease any discomfort. Wet food too. Start her on lysine/ immune system vitamins as she's interacting with Patches and her body is going to have to get used to new germs from a new cat (every critter is carrying their own set of germs/ bacteria etc, even us and her body is in contact with whole new ones, just like Patches will be now.)
Hate typing on phone, so please text or call. Will be home Monday morning.

Kerry brings up a good point. Just like I get sick every year when school starts--I am subjected to a whole new set of germs/bacteria. Kits that go to new homes are similarly assaulted with a whole new set of germs. And any time you are put into a different environment, so it goes. Kerry gave you good advice. I'm glad Nora is ok, and send out love your way.

Yes, my kids have been back at school two weeks and we are all coughing and sneezing from a cold they've picked up. Always the same when they go back.

If the cat litter dust is affecting you, then its definately worth trying a different brand especially in covered litter boxes.

There is a brand of lysine from kitty bloom that we've started using now we are going to shows and its flavored, mine like the taste and a little goes a long way.

Keep me updated. I worry about them, even when they leave they are still my babies.

I'm off to get Lysine as soon as the store opens here. She's coughing a lot again this morning. It's been a crazy night at our house! Lysine was the first thing that came to mind when she sneezed, but the chocking and gagging scared us! Thank you all, I'll keep you updated.

Feel better soon, Nora!

Did the vet have any other suggestions as to what the inflamed trachea could be from besides litter dust?

Sorry you had a scare, but thank goodness it doesn't seem to be anything too crazy serious.

The vet said she may have picked up a little bug from her cousins, but I doubt that. More likely an allergy or a little bug from us or Patches. The coughing slowed after her morning meds, but after running around the house like a little monkey she is coughing again. We are trying Respiratory Rescue litter.

Definately a possibility, no home/ breeder is immune to bugs (and if they say they are they're lying) but everyones ok here. Will obviously update you if that changes. Maybe the change in weather too (from 80's to 50's and drizzling when we meet.) Don't know.. only one of ours has allergies and its food related so can't offer practical advice there.

Is Patches ok? If you need anything, let me know.

Patches sneezed a few times today so we may have a bug. Herman wants me to take Nora to our regular vet, but I want to give the antibiotics a few days. If she gets worse we will definitely go in, but right now she is stable. My dad said, " maybe she is allergic to Patches!"

We just got out of the bath and are staying in her room to keep her warm. Here in a bit I'm going to vacuum and her blankets are fresh washed so just trying to take away as many irritants as possible. I forgot how white she is when she's clean! Lol

Thanks Kerry, we will keep you updated!

Let me know what the shot and antibiotic came too (email me) and I'll cover them. She's still settling in so its the least I can do.
Hope she feels better soon.

It's so sweet of you to offer, but we've got it covered. :). She is our little girl and its a privilege to have her in our family and to be able to take care of her! We love her so much! We were in tears watching her cough. :(. She seems a little congested, but zonked out in my lap right now. I'm sure she will be terrorizing Patches again in no time!

glad she is ok. Fern gave me a scare to when she first came home...took her to the vet and she was fine...the next day she had no sneezing or coughing at all. I rather over react and pay the vet than wait and take the chance of her getting more sick. Hope she is settling in nicely:BigSmile:
