Hi Everyone!
Yesterday I found a 1yo female sphynx for sale on craigslist. Her pictures are heart breaking. She seems to have had an eye infection at one point that got pretty bad. She is not spayed so I would need to take care of that soon. I just want to get everyone’s opinion on her. If you have ever seen something like this / and suggestions. The current owner says she is otherwise healthy. Sadly, she looks filthy and unkept as well. I would really like to give her a home. We agreed on a price of $400- is this reasonable for the breed? I’m new to all of this and I just want her out of there.

Poor baby. It is not about the cost up front for me, it is rather, what is really wrong with the eye. We have seen that some have to have surgery to remove the eye and the cost for that needs to be considered. Do you have the option to have a vet check first by your own vet? @Vadersmom

I had that idea this morning but I’m not sure how to go about asking without it coming off as rude! Any suggestions? The price didn’t phase me but my fiancé was a little apprehensive about it sight unseen at this point. @Catzzzmeow

A Friend of mine has a baby like that and his eye has issue and will for the rest of his life from an infection when little. He gets drops and a cream when it flares up but other than that he is perfect. I have a 3 legged beautiful fur baby who has a leaky eye all the time and vet says it's the 3 eye lid and will do that for life unless the remove it ,but she is fine ,it doesn't bother her. Good luck and do the right thing for you and her.
Maybe ask if you can take her to own vet for check up before decision is made. She is a cutie that's for sure .

This is where it gets tricky but it really is a very important thing to know exactly what is going on. If they get offended or stop talking to you after you ask this question then you know they are hiding something from you. If they really care about the welfare of this baby they will not be offended, but rather happy to hear you are already thinking ahead to the health and welfare of the kitty. If they live close, ask if you can meet you at your vet’s for the exam and you will pay for it. If they do not, then ask if you can have her make a 3 way call with her vet so you can ask your questions. Many vets will not speak to anyone but the cat’s humans so that would solve the problem with that. Do not accept anything they have already in writing. With computers these days, you can pretty much alter/make anything up. Just try not to get your hopes up which I know is hard...but if that baby needs surgery, it will far surpass the cost of a healthy kitten. Let us know how you make out.

Agree with everything so far. I don’t think $400 is a rediculous cost. But the cost of treating the eye could be a couple thousand.

Now if it was me, I wouldn’t care and would just want to get it treated. But that’s just me. I’m a bleeding heart.

Does this seem strange to you? Just a lot of back and fourth for this kitty.

I tend to be one of the wariest people in here lol. How do they not have a primary vet and yet they breed is what I find odd? Is the plan to meet at their home? If not, I would be even more wary. Trust your gut on this...if it feels off, there is usually a reason for it.
If you are able to provide care and no doubt a loving home for a baby in need then go for it. I just wanted to make sure you knew the ups and downs. Even if you wanted to buy insurance it would not cover the eye as it would be considered pre-existing. @Vadersmom

First, thank you for willing t9 give this girl a new home. I’m a bit anxious about it though. First her eye. I think you have to consider if you’re able/willing to go to the vet with an uncertain outcome of the cost to make her eye better. Second I would only pay the money when you have the girl in your arms and not any sooner.
She looks miserable and hope you can give her a good home.

Above all I am so sorry you must be feeling crushed as I know you were excited at the thought. But kudos to you for pressing for more information.
Seems awfully fishy to me that as soon as you asked for info they are outta there. I guess you wait and see if they contact you, but in the meantime...continue your journey and know there is a baby out there with your name on it. @Vadersmom

Congrats....your life has officially changed forever again . If you can do insurance it advised over care credit. Do you have a name yet for your baby?

I have care credit, is that good enough or no?

At the very least get disaster insurance. It’s about $12 a month for a young kitten. I would rather see you get full insurance though. Last I checked it was about $26 a month. I recommend Health Paws because they have no annual limit on coverage. It does go up a little every year. I am spending $58 a month for my 11 year old Sphynx. It was about $35 a month when I got her at 6 years old.

Care credit is great to have to put those expensive bills on up front. Then when you get reimbursed from insurance you can pay it right off. You want to get insurance now though so nothing is considered pre-existing.
