HI everybody,

Sorry for my written english ( i'm a french canadian).

I'm goin to buy my first sphynx soon, I know i'll be in love with the breed and i can't wait to enjoy my passion for sphynx !

My concern is that my futur roommate ( we'll live in a medium appartment) is allergic to cats. And I want to know ... is the fact that the cat has no fur my friend will have no reactions ?!

I know the allergene is also in the cat's secretions ( feces, skin's oil, mucus,etc.) So i've plan to give a lot of lovely baths to my little buddy !

So if someone have a friend who's allergics to cats in generals and tell me that he IS NOT allergics to his sphynx would make my day !

@TardifJM Unfortunately there are NO guarantees for your friend to NOT be allergic. That being said...I am allergic to cats...very highly allergic to them and I have no trouble with the sphynx's. The way I tested it was I got a small kitchen towel... I rubbed it all over a sphynx and then wore the towel around my neck for several hours.
Usually if I go into a house where a cat has been (even if they are NOT there at the time) my eyes IMMEDIATELY swell and water and I get hives and then I start to wheeze. I had NO symptoms from our sphynx.

@Toa and Ross has cat allergies and lives with 3 nakids. I'm sure she can tell you more. As mentioned sphynx are not hypo-allegenic. They can work for some people with allergies though.

Bathing to often will make them more oily
and is not good for their skin.

Well my dad and I are both sensitive to cats and we are both fine. It depends on the person and if they allergic to the hair or the dander or a other things.
As said above bathing too much will cause problems for the baby. And even then it might not solve the problem.
When I was reading, apparently sphynxes have less of the chemical in their saliva that people are allergic to.
So really thr only way you'd know is to take your room mate to a cattery and have them run all over them lol
And you're English is pretty decent! Much better than any attempt I could make in French. Lol even though I did French immersion till grade 11.... didn't learn much sadly.

I'm impress by the quickness of all those answers ! thank you i'm now more confident of having a sphynx in my new appartment, and if everythings good i'd like to get 2 of them so they dont get bored when i'm working.

Tonight i'm goin to a cattery to maybe see my futur soulmate ! So stoked.

Like previous mentioned over bathing is not a good idea.

Everyone is different but we found our boy Pete from a fellow who was moving in with his spouse and he had to rehome the cat because his spouse was super allergic, but everyone reacts differently.

I just came back from the cattery and my reservation is now done ! the kittens will be ready to leave in mid july .

As @nudieluvr said I'm allergic to cats (and dogs). I'm allergic to the furr, the dander and seliva. Most people who are allergic to cats are allergic to all three. Our nakeds have no furr. But they do have dander and saliva. So that means your roommate can still be allergic to a sphynx. Bathing won't help, it will even get more dander and more allergies.
But I'm allergic and still have 3 sphynxes. I wash my hands a lot, wash my clothes, blankets a lot too. I don't allow them to sleep with me. Some months it's worse then others. In spring and summer I sneeze my brains out, feel not well. Sometimes I take meds to deal with it.

So the question is: is your roommate willing to put up with all this for your sphynx?

Maybe you can take your roommate with you to the litter to see if he/she gets an allergic reaction?

Animal allergies can funny things.

My Hubby is allergic to furred cats but not Sphynx. I also have friends who didn't think they were allergic to cats, and seem to be with our nakeds.

It's always best to test beforehand by visiting a breeder or friends with Sphynx.

And congrats on your Sphynx!!! Can't wait for pics.
