Always fighting

Hello all, sorry I've been MIA over the summer, but I was on holidays and not on the computer very much. Sadly though, I am back to work, so should be around more.

Wanted to get some opinions on the dynamic that's going on between Jack and Rosie. Jack is being so mean lately. He's fighting with her all the time, and being really rough. He hasn't actually injured her yet, but I feel like it's just a matter of time before he might. He's still great with people and very loving.

Nothing has changed in the household recently, and no one is sick or anything. It's just like he's decided he no longer likes her.

Any ideas?

If you were out of town , he could be reacting to the change ?
Is Jack neutered or recently neutered? Hormones can play into it too.
How old is Jack now? My Toby was the freshest from 1-2 yrs old

My Toby is the very Senstive one even though he is the freshest one - all front
- Any little change and he gets hissy before he settles back down -

He is my rougher play kitty - I tried diffusers - it made him hiss and switch tail more

I train him like a dog - and redirect , reward with treats along with verbal praise good behavior I see
When they interact -
When he is too fresh , he gets a frown look and stern "Toby Love " command -
Oh he knows he runs like the wind!
If too fresh , he gets a time out for 5 minutes in the bathroom

Lol - now he sleeps with her all the time and they groom each other

He's 4.5 year old (already! I can't believe it), and he came to us neutered. So, probably not a hormone thing. As for my vacation ... I didn't actually go anywhere, but just took 2 months off work to be home with my kids!
I have been resorting to time outs, but I don't think it's working. My biggest fear is that he's really going to hurt her, and then she'll end up afraid of him. Right now she just hisses and hits and tries to run away, but he chases her. He makes no noise, but she hollers like crazy.

Like he had some phase of freshness -
I swear I would hear her shriek and go check and he would run like mad with his tail switching amd ears back fresh
All the while me saying stern "Toby love "
Now he snuggles with her

Keep positive amd lots of intervention rewording good behavior
Hopeful a phase too

Sorry it is a little stressful. Have you thought about getting Feliway Diffusers to hopefully calm them down a bit? Many of us have found them to help.

Did you try a felliway diffuser? I notice with my three sphynxes sometimes the dynamics changes. And that means rough playing. Are there moments Jack and Rosie still play sweet together? Or cuddle together? As long as Rosie isn't unhappy all day or constantly afraid of Jack I think they'll sort it out together.

Oh no, I am sorry to hear they are fighting.
I know our Loki is very "alpha", and he really likes to play rough with Gatsby. It was getting so bad for a while that Gatsby had terrible scratches on him and would hiss and hide from Loki.

We added Feliway diffusers in the house, and they do help for sure. I always know when it's run out and I forgot to switch to a new diffuser, as Loki starts getting crazy and being rough again. Perhaps you could give those a try.
We also make sure to tire Loki out every day. He just has so much more energy than Gatsby, so that helps tire Loki out and not pick on Gatsby as much.

@Kate sorry to hear things have changed between Jack & Rosie.

I had an incident that I was present and witnessed here this summer and it made me very sad that they weren't getting along to the point where I couldn't have two of them in the same room at the same time. Take a look at my thread and read what happened and how I got it to be resolved. Hopefully the things I did might help.

They hate each other now because of a dog! :(

My situation was a bit different, but very intense. But the few things I did made them go back to getting along they way they always have. I hope some of my suggestions help your situation. Best of luck and keep us posted.

@Toa and Ross unfortunately there has never really been a time that Jack and Rosie have ever cuddled, or played together really (unless they are chasing to attack!). My heart's broken over that .... but that's another story!
@GoldHazel thanks for the link to the thread, I will be reading it today.

I will look into the feliway diffuser, it seems to be a very popular option! Thanks for the suggestions.

@Kate yes, the Feliway Diffuser was something I went out and bought when I had that problem (explained in my link I sent you). If you are going to try it, make sure you purchase the Multi-Cat Comfort one and get many to put all around your home. It's not supposed to be plugged in behind furniture, so make sure wherever you place them, that they are out in the open.
