My snuggly kitties and I got to spend another lazy day in bed together. At least the weather is more tolerable for sleeping. Oooooh, why did we get to be lazy today you ask? Might've been up all night working again!

Don't scroll down if you're squeamish!!! No cats allowed at work last night!!!

In that particular picture...I was dissecting a pair of lungs to go on an ex-vivo lung transplant machine! I work in organ donation.

Ask and you shall receive. I thought that might have been a little TOO graphic but here you go! Left lung was scarred down. And heart is still attached in this pic! This concludes the anatomy lesson for the day! LoL

Where my Left hand is down on the table, that is the good lung and my thumb is pointing directly to the heart. My right hand, is turned and off the table slightly holding the scarred lung. It is all set on a sponge on the table, that's not anything. Then, the trachea is the little tube extending at the top.

Amazing and fascinating! Thank you... Is it normal to have all that fat around the heart? What caused the scarring on the left lung? If that had been a smoker would the lungs be brown/black looking?

That is a bit more fat than you would see on some hearts, due disease process. The red heart muscle you see on the left side of the heart would be more prevalent in a healthier heart.

If you look closely at this picture, the more full right lung has some small black dots on the upper portion of it. That is normal filter color from pollution. If this individual had been a smoker at all those black dots would be MUCH more plentiful and throughout both of the lungs. You would see the black dots covering the entire outside tissue of then lungs, not just a scarce dots here and there. The scarring/atelectasis (collapse of the air sacs) was due to infection on the left side.

I see the black dots now! So, if someone lived in the big cities like Philly, New York etc etc., it would almost look like a smoker?

I love anatomy, biology, chemistry and all that good stuff. I wanted to become a doctor but ended up programming the monster (mainframe) computers for a career at the National Board of Medical Examiners in Philly... Loved my job and the city!

Again thank you so much.... feel free to post more!

You just made me feel great about what my lungs must look like, being that I live in NYC, LOL. Thank goodness I'm not a smoker, hahaha.

 Whoops... sorry Eric.... I was curious because I lived in and around Philly for 25 years and often went to New York for plays and concerts. It seemed the cities were always belching black smoke and I wondered what my lungs were looking like...

Haha...it's ok. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I have black city lungs, LOL.

I'm originally from Long Island, NY but spent more time in the Chicago area and suburbs growing up. I had a bought with TB as a kid. I'm sure my lungs aren't photogenic at all! I was thinkng about donating my body to be plastisized and put on traveling exibit in the museums around the world. Hmmm, I wonder what pose would suit me?

Very interesting. Usually photos of lungs are after they have had some kind of preservative and are all grey and yucky. This was really neat to see!
