I haven't seen the movie. but I kinda see both sides IF he were killing the cat for food there is little difference in that and what is done daily to cows and chickens. however, I don't want to see it and I agree the film industry has gotton carried away with "shock value"
I hated Titanic for that reason, they did not need to add the scene with the mom tucking her babies in to drown. It has haunted me ever since I saw it and had I known it was in there would NOT have watched that movie! I don't want to see bad things happen to kids or animals, it takes the entertainment of the movie away for me, so I will not be watching Eli.
