It is hard to believe it has been one week since I had to let go of sage. I am new to this site and this is my first post, so here it goes. As a vet tech, seeing sick and dying animals is apart of my job( not the best part) and is never an easy thing, but this was the hardest thing I've ever dealt with.
Sage was living with my parents for the time being, so when my mother called me saying sage could not walk, I knew it was an emergency. She came into my work in so much pain. We did a few tests and concluded her heart murmer ( she had a grade 4 murmer for most of her life) threw a clot in the middle of her back legs, and was paralyzed from the waist down with no pulse in either legs. From there we did an echo and to top things off, found out she had hcm. I was crushed to find this out.
A few years back I had worked for a horrible breeder that kept all of his cats in tiny cages and almost put sage down due to her murmer. Not once did he mention to me about clots or hcm and that she could get them. If I would have known sooner, I would have taken more action to help slow her heart.
Anyways, sage was so far gone by this point that the right choice was to put her down. She was such an amazing girl and I really miss her. I try not to think about it, but it's so hard not to. I gave her the best two years of her life or atleast I tried,and she was spoiled rotten. All I can really say from this is try to find breeders that test for hcm. Maybe it will save some people heart break. Sage was only 3. I know she is in a better place and will always be in my heart.
