Good news, my friends!!!
So, first, a little more on how bad everything looked...
When I got to the vet's office this morning the receptionist said that she had heard the mild-mannered doctor shouting obscenities from his office last night when he was reading Astor's test results.
I asked him what the best-case scenario would be and he said, "Well, something curable, of course, but it's just not pointing to anything like that. We just have to wait for the ultrasound."
So, the ultrasound showed that his kidneys were normal sized--even on the upper end of normal. If he had a degenerative disease, we would expect them to be shrunken. The bad news is that we don't know what's causing his kidney problems. The doctor is going to have him tested for all the usual suspects (FeLV, FIV, toxoplasmosis, one other I didn't recognize). He's also going to have his urine cultured to be 100% sure there's no bacterial infection. Ultimately, we might go to a urologist for a biopsy.
Until he figures out a cause, of course, a degenerative disease is still on the table, but for now, we're all happy
He sent us home with kidney diet food, some supplements, and Pepcid. He said that Astor should eat as much of the food as he wants. As soon as we got home Astor scarfed down an ENTIRE 5-oz can
