Hi all! I'm new here. Got my first sphynx ever last Saturday. His name is Gus born on Feb 8th 2014. So far he's a very typical sphynx. Sweet, lap loving, food loving, gets along great with kids an other young hairful cat in house. Love him so much!

My question / concern: My hairful cat was lying on my bed this morning and still a little damp from

giving himself a very long and thorough bath. Gus jumped up on the bed frantically sniffing around the way he does when he detects wet cat food has been opened. His nose leads him to my other cat. Gus
buries his face in other kitty's fur and I notice that he's actually biting him and he yanks out a huge clump of fur. I push him away and he goes in and does it again .. as if my cat was a dead rabbit and he was going to mack on him!!! I had to separate them and for hours Gus when back to the same spot on the bed sniffing like crazy. What the Hell!?

They ate fine now, sitting on the same couch. It was almost like my cat's damp fur made him smell like a chicken dinner or something. It was pretty terrifying and has made me look at my kitten in a new way :(

Anyone have a problem like this before???? -Jill

That is really strange. I have never heard of anything like that. I would make sure they stay seperated when you are not home, or if you are busy and cannot keep your full attention on them, just to avoid any harm to either cat, until you can get to the bottom of this issue.

It sounds as if he is fascinated by the fur perhaps. He is not suckling or nursing on the furry fella? I would just keep an eye on the situation, It will most likely dissipate when he figures out that fur is not the best and most tasty thing to toy with and I would imagine if the furry guy is annoyed by it, the kitten will get a whack or two...Also, perhaps give your furry kitty a good wipe down with some baby wipes to remove any food or smells the kitten is attracted to. Oh, and welcome @Gus2014!

Welcome! I can only imagine the look on your face when you saw what was happening. Just wondered if you leave a bowl of kibble out for your baby to graze. If not perhaps he is still hungry since you are saying it must be the smell he is attracted to. Also wondered if using a wipe on your other cat might help with that to neutralize the smell.

@Gus2014 glad to hear things have calmed down...your other cat would surely put your new baby in their place if it came down to being eaten alive...lol, but you were smart to monitor and be concerned being they are still transitioning.

Here's more proof that Sphynxes are just weird! I'm glad everything is okay, and there are no more gaping holes in your furry's coat. Welcome to you and your clowder!

Wow... I have a 7 mo old kitten that thinks everything is his chew toy. He will chew on anything paper, the other sphynx, our ShiTzu,,,, you get the picture. LOL I would make sure they have equal quality time with Mommy.

Thanks for the welcomes and advice. I do free feed. I think maybe it was a crazy fluke? They are wrestling and having a great time right now. I did think Gus was going in to 'nurse' the other and yes was shocked and horrified (as was my cat) when he jerked out a mouthful of fur! Hair envy maybe? :)
Hi and welcome!

Furry cats usually lose hair around their um... udders?... so that the kittens can nurse easily. Gus was just trying to help! lol And recently I have discovered my 8 month old kitten has decided his adopted brother is for nursing.. Mostly because Yuri does it to himself so Nigel wanted in on it...

I would just separate them whenever he goes for Sturgeon's belly area. That's what I have to do..

Warning: This photo might make the squeemish flee. But told me why Yuri has such big nerps.
