Chinese Crested --- where/how to *everything*?

Hello everyone
I need a bit of direction... I'm currently looking for a Chinese Crested but have absolutely no idea where to start. I've checked the local rescues and so on, there don't seem to be many (if any) active breeders on my side of the country and the handful I've come across -- well, let just say, they're looking a little suspect. Also, I don't seem to be able to find a community like this for the breed and I was really hoping I'd stumble upon one... because let's be honest, raising nekids requires a tribe. So I've come to call on you all for assistance. PLS Halp to find nekid doggo! Thanks in advance.

I have a Chinese Crested, I think it all comes down to same with getting a animal of any breed. You always need to take the time to find a good breeder that does health checks, has a health guarantee... and are usually a member of a reputable club for your best chance of having a healthy pet. That said I also support getting rescue animals as well, all animals need a chance at having a loving home that will take care of them and sometimes you get lucky and they are also well bred and/or are healthy. So when getting a new family member I either try to support breeders that do their best to better the breed and raise healthy animals or I adopt a rescue. Hopefully someone here in your area can suggest a good breeder in your area Chinese Crested's are fun amazing dogs. Here’s my girl:

Just want to add she is classified as a “Hairy Hairless” which is the type of Chinese Crested they use for showing. Basically means they still grow hair and need a lot of shaving and maintenance to have the hairless look. There are three types of Chinese Crested’s: “Hairless” that don’t need shaving but lack the hair growth to have the full hair on the feet, tail, head and mane for show, the “Hairy Hairless” that are mostly bald on their lower body but do need regular shaves on the rest of the body for the hairless show look and the “Powder Puffs” that are fully haired and shown with a full coat.

Oh my good golly gumdrops! What a gorgeous girl! Thank you so much for your reply and for sharing your lovely lady. I went through the same research when I started with sphynx... but after losing 2 to HCM - 1 rescue and 1 from a breeder that tested/ guaranteed - I haven't been able to take the leap and gamble on another sphynx heartbreak (literal and figurative). Though I'm certain crested have their own brand of health fun - I'm looking for a support animal that's a bit more "portable" than a sphynx who may or may not like going into the outs. Neither of my boys were into scheduled trips outdoors -- though one liked to escape and then demand reentry into the house after he decided he'd had enough out, usually around the time I was in tears, running all over looking for him. Little jerk. I digress, the research just seems more difficult this time around and I feel like I'm doing it wrong or something is escaping me. Fingers crossed someone pops in with some suggestions for places I can look or people I can bother.

Ahhhhhh! Fantastic. I was wondering the difference between the hairless and hairy hairless... thank you! I could not for the life of me tell much difference. I must have been looking at some of the best groomed babies on both sides. Lol. I just assumed it was down to the breeding - I mean it is, sort of, in the most literal sense -- but rather a preference for papillonesque look over more sparsely covered head and feet. Like how sphynx can vary in body hair from peachy fuzzy to super slick. Preference combined with luck of the draw - yay genetics roulette.

Absolutely, I think it all comes down to breeding and genetics. Some you can tell are just badly bred in general (ugly dog type winners). In a normal healthy litter there can be all types though so you just never know, lol.

Poor little ugly dog winners. I have seen a few and they're that wonderful flavor of ugly-adorable -- the ones you feel bad for but can't help but aww. When their little tongues fall out the side of their mouths... merp.

Lol, exactly. My girl is 7 now and has lost almost all her teeth in the last year. It’s very normal for Crested’s to lose teeth early, once again genetics. See her tongue out?

EEEEP!!! it gets me everytime. I think it's so adorable. I'm sad for the cause of it but it's so cute.

OMG I am a sucker for the tongue sticking out too! Uber has done it a couple times, especially since he had one of his canines removed in November. Mostly though his lip will curve inward and get stuck. We call it his Derp Face and I should post a picture of it in another thread.

I also like Chinese Cresteds and appreciate the clarification of the hairless designations for them. I thought the Powder Puff was the fur on just the 'edges' so to speak and appreciate the correction.

We have a 16 y o powder puff we got from the shelter last year. He bites me every chance he gets, but he's only got 3 teeth so it's almost funny sometimes, but still annoying. He has heart problems and won't be around a lot longer.

Since you're already used to hairless care concepts, just be prepared that Cresteds have their own quirks compared to hairless cats! Their skin needs sunscreen, bathing, and gentle moisturizing, but their teeth are notoriously delicate due to the hairless gene link.

Don't give up - taking your time to find the right ethical breeder or dedicated rescue will save you a world of heartache later. Good luck on your search for your future nakie doggo!
